The ASWB Masters/Clinical Exam is a test that was made to determine whether or not an individual's level of knowledge of social work in a clinical setting is sufficient. You will have four hours to complete 170 multiple choice questions, including 20 pre-test questions, that test your knowledge in Human Behavior, Diversity Issues, Diagnosis and Assessment, Psychotherapy, Communication, Therapeutic Relationships, Professional Ethics, Clinical Supervision, Practice Evaluation, Service Delivery, and Clinical Practice and Management. To register, you must have at least a Master's degree from a social work program, and two years of clinical social work experience.

Hey Phil, just wanted to let you know I took your last, last last study group session where you went over the acronym and did practice questions. I studied 3 mo prior and with your study session I am proud to say after taking the LSW exam 2x, third time was a charm and I passed!!!! I really feel your session helped further prepare me to pass this and just wanted to offer my heartfelt thanks. I will see you again soon when it gets close to time to take my LCSW. ;)

I saw the positive comments on your video and wanted to check it out. I found this video to be very helpful when breaking down the application questions. After reading over the initial questions I thought I had my answer to select. However, after you broke down the question further and highlighting parts of the application question some of the choices I made changed. After going over the correct answers I got a better understanding of what the exam makers are looking for. I will be looking at other videos to educate as I will be preparing to take the test this year. Thank you for the time into making this video as well as others.

On question 2, I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be answer B because during an intake we do ask about medical history, if they are experiencing any adverse medical symptoms, and when was the last time they visited their PCP. If your reasoning for why the answer is A was because during an intake we ask about substance use anyways, couldn’t that reasoning also apply to option B?
@samanthafields5901
@samanthafields5901 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. I took a course with one of the actual people who helps write the exam and she said you always go to health and safety first. You never assume someone has a drug problem. You get them medical attention. Also ASWB ALWAYS expects you to reach out to child protective services if a youth is even a little bit at risk. Again, things I learned in the course with Dawn Apgar.

@@samanthafields5901 I agree. Getting medical attention would address both medical and possible substance abuse. The stem gives no indication of substance use or other behaviors so my instinct is to refer to medical first.

Agreed, but since youre in an intake and that is going to be discussed anyway, its worth mentioning before the other option just assuming that its nothing and shes tired. If the client denies drug use, then you know that isnt what is causing her issues.

Phil For Number 2: I am just really confused because I have been told numerous times from different study material that you must always RULE OUT MEDICAL in questions such as this (when there is some sort of physical symptom going on). I just feel like there is no consistency to the questions and responses. Ya know? How do I work with this if it seems like I need to rule out a medical issue if the woman is falling asleep repeatedly.

I get that SU is important to rule out and assess as well, but then where does that leave me when I hear over and over and over again to RULE OUT MEDICAL?
@TheCutiepie2004

I thought that too. It would have made sense to me if the vignette stated that the social worker is working in a substance abuse clinic to go and assess for substance abuse. I know that before diagnosing, it's important to rule out both medical and substance abuse.

For question #2, would that not make us to assume she’s doing drugs since it says “when was the last time she used was”? Bc I also thought that most of the time when a physician is involved, that is typically the answer.

Hold on. In the question number one the question stated that the social worker gathers information and what should be her next step. To me that reads as she already knows all the main things she needs to know if we are talking about the NEXT step. That also makes me think (from the way the question reads) that she should know the information about the niece and whether CPS should be called. I totally would have selected CPS here because of the way the question structured. These are the questions that have failed me! How can I read the question like this and know that with the “what should be our NEXT step” we are actually still on step one and are still gathering information?

Question about case study 1: if the ct. is telling you about something that happened that was abusive, between her and her bf, why wouldn't we pick C and provide the woman with info about healthy relationship dynamics is we had that kind of info to share? Whether she's lying or not, that's not for us to decide at that moment. shouldnt we just respond to the information she is giving us at the time of the session?

This is why studying for the exam is so frustrating for me! I am in a study course and I had a similar question just like number 1. I chose an answer similar to the correct answer in question 1 and I was told that anytime someone reports abuse or neglect regarding a child then safety has to be considered first. After watching your video, I chose B for question 1 and now its the total opposite. I understand not making an assumption is helpful but if she's watching her niece, more than likely she is underaged. And if something was to happen to her niece the following day, the social worker could face a liability for failing to make a report. The essential purpose of CPS is to investigate FIRST, its not as if the boyfriend was going to automatically be "found guilty". This is extremely confusing and I am lost.

i feel the same way. i feel like there is no consistently with so many of these questions - a lot of different resources will explain it in a differently and choose different answers. but how can i study like that?? ugh
@lexi4christ108
@lexi4christ108 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, one way I look at answering these questions are "what will you as a social worker do in the present situation", also, I'm learning that when answering these questions you should not choose the extreme like contacting CPS. Unless you hear, see, witness abuse or neglect. This question doesn't say the kid was around when the chair was thrown. Also, in learning not to add or take away from the above statement of make assumptions.. If a client told me that their boyfriend threw a chair while watching my niece, I need more information to see what has happened. I need to get her feelings and ask where was the niece. I hope this helps.

#3. So you're saying that even though the woman is doing pot and coke, you don't call CPS because it's only been "recent" that she found out she's pregnant? Wrong, man. You call CPS because she's been damaging that fetus since conception and to that very day of the intake. Remember, CPS calls are NOT punitive, they are for child safety. How would you like it if, say, another month or two went by before your wife's fetus stopped doing drugs?
@lorib2214
@lorib2214 2 жыл бұрын
There may be differences with respect to mandated reporting based on the state in which you practice. However, most state CPS agencies are guided by state laws that either limit or prohibit state intervention prior to the birth of the child, especially if the client is non-voluntary/declines to work with CPS. While you could make a report to CPS, in the majority of states the most they can or will do is offer to connect the client to services - a redundancy to the correct answer. Depending on the individual’s motivation to change, their reaction to being referred to CPS may negatively impact their trust in and subsequent follow through with substance use treatment. Additionally, we do not know how far along this individual is in their pregnancy and whether or not they may be considering termination or are committed to carrying the fetus to term.
