Breaking In a Power Supply (Overloading Electronics)

With a new power supply comes the tedious responsibility to ensure it's up to the job. In this situation you could:
1. Undertake the boring, ordinary approach to load testing it...
or b) Ditch that and go straight to destructive testing.
Not to the PSU, but to anything else lying around.
The logic behind the latter option is simple. If the power supply survives where everything else is destroyed, it passes the test.
In other words, grab a bunch of components and stick them on the output.
(Be aware, some employers may not approve of this methodology.)

I've heard many reports about batteries just firing up with no reason, causing massive disasters at home. It must be overloaded somehow, so the only guilt is to blame the transformer, I guess, or the cheap electronic circuits. Pay attention to what you buy, people.

Dan, be aware that those power supplies all seem to have a glitch that can cause them to crash on rare occasions, but do it in style by putting out a random voltage. If whatever you're working on starts misbehaving check out the display and whip the leads out if it's showing a high voltage. (Then video it in its crashed state.) Maplin seem to be in denial about this problem and have removed product feedback mentioning it.

I’ve had them flick to 36V for no apparent reason. Figured it was something like noise being coupled back as it only ever happened in smps development. Got in the habit of setting the voltage limit every time after losing some expensive silicon.
@Kalanchoe1
@Kalanchoe1 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheAwesomeManDan you gotta be careful with high-frequency stuff, I've had three 555 timers leave a dent in the ceiling because some high-frequency noise got back to the supply and it just stopped regulating voltage and current temporarily.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheAwesomeManDan I subsequently discovered that when it crashes the three voltage range LEDs will be off, but the actual range selected is the 36V range. I've got in the habit of making sure that on the rare occasion I use that range I always set it back down to about 3V. That way when the PSU crashes it just puts out 3V. Shame - it's quite a useful supply otherwise.

Dude, that is hands down the coolest smoke ring I've ever seen. The way it was drawn back in by the suction cause by the heat was cool enough, but then it not only survived impacting the alligator clip, but also survived _and_ gained thermal energy from the heat column, which was converted into enough kinetic energy to expand it and give it escape velocity through the suction on the other side. That one little smoke ring displayed so much beautiful physics that I can't believe it only got a one frame mention.

Reminds me a lot of electronics class at school. As we only had one combined lab/classroom, in project lessons the teacher taught a GCSE (15-16 year olds for those outside the UK) class in the regular fashion, while an A-level class (17-18 year olds) could use the rest of the room as they wished to work on their major projects. Hence we took full advantage. Sabotage between each other was so common whenever you got your breadboards out at the start of a lesson the first thing you would do was reverse all your electrolytic caps and 555 timer chips, as it was virtually guaranteed someone would have turned them around. Another was to check for the infamous, as we called it, 'Del-Boy Diode' - a reversed diode placed between the power input and the main power rail of the breadboard, which didn't explode, smoke or in fact do anything - it just ensured not a single volt of power would reach the circuitry until you realized the diode had been maliciously planted and took it out. The other was to innocently get as close as you dare to the 15 year olds, and plug in a 'project', which was not a project at all, it was deliberately designed as either a bomb or a smoke machine. Smoke machine, usually a 555 chip and/or a few resistors wired up to gently smolder, was the preferred way as you could be long gone happily working away at the other side of the room before the kid started looking round to see who owned the burning board, and getting a lung full of grilled resistor as a memento. The 'bomb' was less subtle, almost always a 555 timer chip, designed for 5 volts but getting 24 volts - the wrong way. By the end of our 2 years most of us had figured out the best way to wire up a 555 chip to get the most 'bang' out of 24 volts (which was the max of our lab power supplies) As you can tell the versatile 555 IC got misused a LOT during our time there, and we were really surprised the teacher didnt ask questions about why our class were all eating through a ridiculous number of these chips.....

This is what my class did in the circuits portion of high school engineering. Twas quite fun till we had to contribute in purchasing all the caps, resistors, lightbulbs, and other electrical components we broke.

That "Review" button is obviously to make it more powerful for review purposes, just like those Android phones that overclocked the CPU when they were being benchmarked.

one time I was playing around with some tantalum capacitors, and i accidentally connected it the wrong way to 9 volts, and the whole thing exploded with a huge bang shooting parts of itself across the room. I then decided to do it again but ramp up the power slowly. Eventually, pink smoke came out of the capacitor.
