Let's run our new Toyota Tacoma through the Rubicon! This video almost didn't happen believe it or not. Shaun from Story till now talked me into doing a video on the way to the trail! So big thank you to Shaun for not only coming down from Canada for this trip but for convincing me to make a video as well.
The Rubicon is a legendary trail. Let's do what we can to keep it open. Pick up trash, clean up spills and do what you can to keep this place open for generations! I hope that you enjoy this video enough to get outside and live life! Make these memories ASAP!

Thank you for watching the video! Since OnX is the official sponsor of this trip it feels like a good time to remind you that we have a 20% discount worked out for any of you interested in trying their software. I believe it's like $30 for the year, which is already cheap, but who doesn't like to save a little extra when they can. No pressure on my end but this really is great software. It's constantly helping me find epic destinations. Call some friends and get some trips on the calendar! The time for making memories is now folks! The Rubicon NEEDS to be on your bucket list as well as a few others that I have plans to visit in the near future. Oh yeah, the Discount code is "dirtlifestyle" and here is a link if you are interested. Thank again for watching! ONX MAPS: webmap.onxmaps.com/account-purchase.html?

If you have the locker on it turns off abs, tacomas have a anti roll back feature that uses the abs, many times if I’m using the locker and I roll back just a inch it will shut the truck off and say trans temp high and oil pressure low

I did an upgrade on a buddies Tacoma by installing a cotter pin in the transmission line "bypass" block to keep the lines open at all times. In addition to that an added trans cooler up front and he hasn't had further issues. Hope that helps.

It definitely does! I always consider a cooler for towing but this would be a good idea for crawling aswell. 👍
@PNW_Rodeo
@PNW_Rodeo Жыл бұрын
@@DirtLifestyle Nate, pinning that plunger in on the bypass block is very helpful in keeping the temps down before they get hot. You can find it inline with the trans lines under the passenger side. There's a plunger on the side with a tiny hole on either side of it, like a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Push that plunger in and hold it while threading the cotter pin through to retain it. Love the videos and I'm glad I could provide some helpful info. 👍
@rickwhitmire7933

Is this only for an Automatic Trans? The cotter pin deal. I’ve seen my low oil pressure like come on, once in 70,000 miles. But I was at an extreme angle.
@PNW_Rodeo
@PNW_Rodeo Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's for the transmission cooler bypass valve. It's s small block between both lines that is closed when the fluid temp is below a set temp (re-routes fluid back to transmission instead of cooler). When the fluid reaches temp the valve opens and allows the fluid to go to the cooler up front. Pinning it locks it open 100%.

Your ending really got me Nate. I'm lying in bed with a blood clot in my lung, I can't take the heat and humidity outside. So my 502 Suburban swap continues to sit and wait for me. I'm missing out on trail rides with my wife and daughter and the unknown of upcoming test dates and results is not leaving me in a great state of mind. 51 yrs old and I wish I had at times done more for myself and my family than always helping others. It felt right and good at the time, and even though I would never turn my back on someone in need if I was in a position to help, I'm lying here feeling like I short changed myself and my family. To anyone reading this, along theblines of Nate's closing remarks, if you're able now, get out with family and friends and run some trails and enjoy the time you have NOW, don't wait. Thanks for the video Nate.

Problems, troubles, and breakdowns are half the fun (as long as its not catastrophic and/or injuries involved.) When things go wrong, it makes things exciting. It gives reason to stop, have fun, joking around with each other, work together, and overall just enjoy the experience. When things go perfectly smoothly, it seems like things go by too quick and it can be "boring" (relatively at least. Its never boring going on an adventure haha)

Moses Lake here! Same issues with my lifted 3rd gen taco. Imo, your cruise issues could be the front sensor in the grill, your ABS sensors (or the wires for them), or less common, a wheel bearing (most likely on the rear). The most common problem being the abs sensor failure or the wiring for them. The wires are very thin and brittle, they break internally very easily when stretched. Pull the harness off each sensor and test for voltage with your truck in acc mode.
@whiskeydick5121
@whiskeydick5121 Жыл бұрын
My issue is the sensor in the grill. Lifted 7.5 inches in the front, 6 in the rear on 35's. My cruise sensor does not like the hight vs stock.
@alexs825
@alexs825 Жыл бұрын
If it’s the sensor you can add washers in the top screw holes to point it down. You have to guess and check but I’ve heard 1 thin washer is enough for 3” of sensor lift. Most people aren’t as high tho they usually have the sensor 4” higher not 6-8”
@mazevx2451
@mazevx2451 Жыл бұрын
So over here they realign or recalibrate the sensors if you lift or lower a vehicle and it's a necessity to get it registered to be highway legal again
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle Жыл бұрын
It's definitely the sensor. I clear the code and after 300-400 miles it trips again. Then if I take a corner fast the traction control light flashes and trips if the crash avoidance light is on. If I solve the problem with the crash avoidance sensor it should solve the traction control system issues. The low oil pressure and high transmission temp problems can probably be solved with a doubler in front of the tcase. With lower tcase ratios I can keep the rpms up, locking the torque converter and keeping oil pressure up. Just a theory but this is how I plan on approaching these issues 👍. Maybe I can build the sensor into the bumper and re calibrate it or just move it lower in the grill 🤷‍♂️

Cool video. I'm not a Guru but I believe what you may need to do with the truck is find out if HPtuner is supporting the 2021 or 22 year and then I would pull your oil pan and modify the location of the oil pump pickup tube and maybe your pan if need be and you may want to add a slosh or baffle plate to help hold oil in the bottom of the pan. We do it with the LS/LT engine pans for custom fitting into classics. Depending on what HPT supports you can go in and turn off the codes and check eng lt and even remove the sensor if needed. With what you've done to the truck there's no dealer that'll touch it for warranty. There sticky that way (worked at some) ABS & traction is another issue. Toyota has programming in them for safety shifts vs rpm vs spd that mixes in the trans, abs and tcs programming......if you turn off your TC system it will still operate under certain conditions and engage abs under certain conditions. Toyota's way of thinking they accounted for your safety. I'm not aware of a way around it yet. Like your vid's. I'm just down the road from you in Redmond OR. I'm building a 66 Stout right now and we have a 4runner & Tundra that I've had the same problems with.
@MH-ih7rh
@MH-ih7rh Жыл бұрын
Good motor but not really made for off road. I believe the guy who made OVTUNE mentioned that oil pools in the valve covers and has trouble draining back, hence the smoking that people see. There was something in there also about a bad oil pan design as well with the oil pickup tube and it leading to starvation. I don't think that the Toyota engineers pictured the truck going "that off road".

My 2017 Tacoma had the same oil pressure issue, once, mid climb on a ledge, on Charleau Gap trail. Wasn't an issue before or since on equally steep climbs or descents. Really like the truck but I hate the "nanny" tendencies of all the electronics.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle Жыл бұрын
That is a great way to describe it. "Nanny" electronics are currently the only thing failing and unfortunately they are taking out perfectly functional systems like cruise control and traction control. I can live with the low oil issue since it's only occasional but it is still kind of lame lol. In any case the only problems I'm having are related to these overbearing nanny systems.

Im 52 almost 53 and i keep telling people to stop talking about stuff and go do it. My bucket list is way longer than the time i have to do it so now i will do as much as i can. Thanks for the great video and the inspiration at the end. I will do this trail when i have a rig capable of doing it.

I'm one of two Isuzu VehiCross' that have done the entire Rubicon trail. Not gonna lie, it was intense! I had doubts going through it but in the end (day 3) we were golden. No breakage just a heim joint repair got me through. What I remember most was the friendships that were made and forged along the way. Epic trip!

I like to camp at buck island lake. It is one of the most scenic spots on the trail and I think it is closer to the half way point. The part of the trail by buck island is also one of the more difficult sections. After that the trail eases up quite a bit.

I completely agree Nate. Get out and live your life. So many of us, (myself included) get so wrapped up in day to day struggles and work, that life goes by and before you know it, it's gone. I'm going to be 51 this fall and it seems like just yesterday I was 25. It really is true that the older you get, the faster the years seem to go by. Thanks for the reminder to get out and live! I hope your message reaches many people. Great video and that zip tie fix was borderline genius! Keep living life Nate and bring us all the videos!

I did it in 2007 in my YJ with SOA Dana 44 & 33” tires. The best mod was the NV4500 with the Atlas TC. That’s why I am retiring in 8 months, want explore more. The only issue we had was a CJ and a radiator.

Wow, Haven't run the 'Con in probably 25yrs! I've run it 3 times in my Early Bronco, once with a trailer in tow. Broke a rear alloy shaft on two separate occasions.....yeah it's a pretty tough trail and pulling the third member at Spider lake was not fun! Plan on running it next spring/summer with my step son and his 3 linked front FJ80 axled 1st gen Tacoma and me in my '85 SB pickup. Should be fun! Tip: Bring spares for stuff you think you might break and you won't break, but leave them home and.......
