It's Badminton training time again!!
Join Jammy and I, as we head to a training camp under the expert guidance of none other than 5* event rider Simon Grieve at his beautiful base in Leicestershire.
Simon Grieve, a seasoned British rider with an impressive track record, has been making waves in the eventing world for many years, because he's super old now ;) With notable achievements like completing Pau5* with his entry Mr Fahrenheit, Simon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our training sessions, as well as the silliness we all know and love!
But we're not alone on this journey! Joining us is my good friend Tina, aka Life on the Left Rein, who's gearing up for her own Badminton adventure in May. Together, we'll tackle the challenges of eventing and push ourselves to new heights.
In this first training session, Simon focuses on horse gymnastics to enhance our skills and refine our technique. With a keen eye for detail, he helps me improve my position over fences, setting the stage for a successful campaign at Badminton.
So, join us as we chase our dreams of eventing glory. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button and stay tuned for more episodes in our journey towards Badminton Horse Trials. Trust me, you won't want to miss a single moment! 🐎✨

Has Simon ever ridden Jam? I would love to see a vlog with him jumping her

I think the stiffness she mentioned is probably coming from the position of the lower leg. It's quite far out ahead, which creates tension in the hip, which translates into tension in the upper body. It's all stiff because the lower leg is out in front of her. Then in trying to create inside bend, she's hanging on the inside rein and the mare is bracing against it. They're essentially bracing against each other. My lease horse is great at convincing me to do exactly this. He responds really well to a little tap on the inside shoulder if he's not moving off my inside leg, and then he sort of unlocks and responds better to the flexion I'm asking for with the inside rein. TLDR: tension caused by a chair seat, bracing against each other is causing the incorrect bend. Just for anyone who wanted more info on what needs work here. Being in a chair seat will keep you from being able to relax over the jump because you're sort of forcing your leg up into your hip. You're jumping "against yourself." The same way a chair seat will make posting trot extremely difficult. Loved the video, super educational. I'm working on that little bit of shoulder fore to improve my canter work with my lease horse. He loves to counter-bend for balance and I have to really police myself so I don't just lean back on him with the hand haha

Yes, the jumping coach William the other week mentioned that, suggesting that Meg bring her upper body forward a little bit more so she's not behind the movement. I agree that will make a big difference. Everything is looking more fluid and less braced than it was only a few months ago, so I'm excited to see more improvement as time goes on! I think the defensive seat has come partly from nervousness and also because Meg's horses are on the smaller side, so there's a natural disinclination to sit too far forward because it makes the rider feel as if they're over the shoulder/ahead of the movement which can also be problematic - and will shoot you out the front door if the horse does stop. I've noticed that Brits tend to ride quite upright and driving in general, compared to riders from various other countries. It's interesting to watch, you can see the difference even in the pony European classes - the French are more forward, the Irish are more natural, it's really interesting stuff. Love Meg's attitude and willingness to learn and improve, it's very motivational and I commend her for putting herself out there repeatedly so that we can learn along with her. And Simon is a brilliant coach.
@CDN_Bookmouse
@CDN_Bookmouse 3 ай бұрын
@@joeypotter6051I'm not saying the upper body needs to be more forward, I'm saying the leg needs to be more back. Leaning too far forward is a bad habit and she'll be riding even MORE against her own leg. The lower leg needs to move back and underneath her, the upper body can then be adjusted as needed since we all know when you change one thing, you start an endless game of equitation whack a mole. The foundation of all correct equitation (and therefore the most correct and relaxed riding) is the correct position of the lower leg. It needs to be under the hip and that can't be corrected by moving the upper body forward. I do agree that her attitude is lovely and putting your riding on the internet for everyone to judge is way braver than I could ever be. Equestrians can be very much like ballerinas in my experience: absolutely brutal.

My mom's horse, when I was growing up, used to move off my head moving. He taught me so much about balance, and how everything is connected. Your hip is connected to your shoulder to your elbow to your hand, and we tend to forget when we ride.

Meg the saddle you ride in is designed to sit in chair position, which makes it hard to put legs on and encourages the driving position. You need a CWD saddle!

I think it's going to always be a struggle to fit a saddle to Jam who is short backed that also fits Meg who is relatively long in the leg. Agree a different cut might help, but it could be tricky to find. (My friend has a CWD and hates it lol.)

Jam is just stunning - how she trotted over the 'poles' - her elevation was gorgeous. Simon is an amazing teacher. The subtle difference of relaxing your knees Meg, had such an impact upon your connection with Jam. She looked more relaxed, and you both looked more in sync. Your partnership with Jam is so beautiful to watch - it's mind-blowing how much information you have to retain as an equestrian, though & put into practice🫣. You & Jam, Tina & Banksy are definitely the ones to watch - bring on Badders🤗❤

That last line was so gorgeous! It is funny I don’t always think of straightness but when you bring Jam in straight she looks lick she’s out of a magazine! I’ve seen Simon critiquing himself and of course you do too. It is so easy to fall into some bad habits when no one is watching from the ground. Can’t wait for cross country!

Jam's breed type does tend to block at the base of the neck. I like doing shoulder stretches and Spanish Walk right after warmup. In the educational phase of the ride, they really need to be encouraged to be relaxed through the withers and keep pushing from the hind end. I find Spanish Walk gets the front end moving enough that the hind end can come through. IMHO good call feeling the block in the energy at the withers.

Before anything else, those breeches look AMAZING on you. You should buy a pair in every color. So flattering! Who makes them? Beyond that, what a useful lesson! I have felt all along that the issues you have are more about managing and using the turns to your advantage, and that's just what he said LOL. Also what all the other instructors lately have said--to do your adjustments around the corners by keeping Jammy balanced and off her inside shoulder and half-halting, and then just let her go to her fences! She knows that part like the back of her hoof! 🙂 Can't wait for cross country day! [Oh, and Simon is AWESOME--already said so on Tina's vlog, but will say it here as well. I like how effective he is along with being absolutely the most positive person on the planet.]
