I still remember it. I was at my parents house in west Mobile. My house was across town in midtown. We were all around the Christmas tree and my mom was unwrapping a little gift my brother and sis in law gave her. It was an ornament with my niece’s ultrasound photo. My parents became grandparents and I became an aunt. I was tearing up so happy and then glanced at the TV and saw this thing heading towards my house. Luckily I had no damage but I know several people who did. My friend’s family home was a total loss. It was a beautiful 1920s Spanish mission. I always loved that house and had so many happy memories there. My high school also had severe damage. It was not a good day for Mobile.

I remember the sound, how strong it was. Everything felt like it was shaking! Went right through my neighborhood. I’ll never forget it!

This tornado is on Santas naughty list

My first year living in Mobile, (2008), there was a tornado watch on Christmas Eve. You just get used it. Stormy & warm, or sunny & beautiful. Never know what you'll get in Winter in Mobile.

I wonder that had it not been for the severe weather, WALA might not have had any local newscasts that day (many TV stations don't have any local news on Christmas Day so their entire news and program production staffs can get the day off).

My apartment was about 2 blocks from the tornado’s path, and we thankfully only got minor damage on the street I lived on. I was returning from Biloxi and noticed that government off I-65 empty of cars, people… and there was what I thought was green lightning flashing here and there. I got to the Loop by the Walgreen’s just after the tornado passed. There weren’t any people outside yet. No one. No first responder sirens yet. That tornado and I almost crossed paths. There was a car upside down in the intersection by Walgreen’s. It was eerie, especially knowing that I’d gotten there before anyone had come out to see any damage. It was awful. Just awful. It wasn’t until later that I discovered that ‘weird green lightning’ were transformers exploding. That scene, in those circumstances, with a backdrop of absolute dead silence… it was surreal. It could’ve been so much worse, and thank the good lord it wasn’t.

Right now I live where this tornado hit... Thank God I didn't then, I lived in Theodore, AL. I remember putting my son and our 2 dogs in the bath tub, covered by a twin mattress... One of the scariest moments of my life!
