Thoughts??? JB Hunt is growing fast! How do walmart and Jb hunt drivers feel about this intermodal acquisition?
@Gunfox61
@Gunfox61 5 ай бұрын
I think we will see more of this and likely could see a company Do a all rail system to move trailers a cross the nation and have a rail hub central system with locals delivering and picking up cargo with in 100 to 150 miles from their rail site. With the lack of CDL Drivers OTR could be less and less. In favor of getting the most trailers to customers per day. In 3 or 4 days you could have a trailer go from East to the West or West to East.

I used to be a driver and I used to be a commercial electrician. As a electrician, I worked on construction jobs. Construction jobs are temporary. One day , whatever you are building is built and the job is over. I decided I would try OTR driving. Didn’t know what I was getting into. Didn’t know about all the sitting, no getting paid stuff. So , I started jumping back and forth. I treated Driving like a temporary job, like construction. Sometimes I drove, sometimes I did construction work, back and forth. Anyway, one of my trucking jobs was with JB. It was good for a while, good miles. But then the miles dropped and I was sitting for a couple of days, not making money, so I quit. I was at the Atlanta terminal. Around 1999. I kid you not, I had to stand in line, to quit, they had some lunch room tables set up. And you walked down the line, turning in your stuff. ID card, fuel card, ect. But , at the same time they had 2 orientation classes going. Probably had 100 percent turnover rate, they didn’t care. I eventually dropped the driving in 07. Don’t miss it a bit.

Wallmart, BNSF and JB Hunt entered into agreement in the early 90s and the agreement stipulated a maximum size for the number of Wallmart drivers allowed. This is just a continuation of that. It's also what gave the predictability Wallmart needed in order to grow their stores as soon as, China came into the picture in 96

Have you made a video yet on jb hunt implementing cameras to watch their drivers? They claim they dont continue to record when the truck is not in motion, but their video explaining the cameras showed a man hopping in and out of the truck on his break. Many of these big companies are screwing their employees in multiple ways. Its very sad 😔

I’ve been training for them since around 2012 and just got the camera put in my truck recently. Policy is that when the breaks are set the camera stops recording and if you still feel uncomfortable they say you can cover the camera with something like a hat or use the curtain. You can’t cover the camera while driving down the road. Haha

I remember when Kirk Thompson was CEO. He started with the company when he was young, and Mr Hunt helped him move up. Around 1990, he was making a basic salary of $400,000 plus bonuses. One year he made a million including bonuses. Then after Mr Hunt passed away, Thompson's salary suddenly jumped to several million in basic compensation. Other executives got huge raises also. It was all a good ole boy network of executives and board members. They knew they would never get away with it while Mr Hunt was alive. But they always said they couldn't afford pay raises for drivers, or afford to give them time off. For years, they wouldn't put jake brakes on the trucks, using the excuse they were dangerous!!! They made a big press release about the onboard computers they got IBM to design. Qualcomm wasn't good enough. They spent a fortune putting the on board computers in every truck. After a few months, the things were not working well at all. Very quietly and with no fanfare, they replaced them all with Qualcomm units. There were a number of things they bungled besides that. They have always considered drivers a dime a dozen.

Alex, could you check out why brokers are charging drivers to get our pay that is owed to us, we do a job at the agreed price of $2000 finish job, then they throw in that of we want to get quick pay it will cost us .07 percent to get it or we will need to wait upwards to 30 working day to get paid. This is bull in so many ways, as we know the customer is already paying them $500 or more. Then we get hammered for more. Let me know if this hits home, these brokers are out of hand. We need to do something about it. Thanks for doing what you do.

As an driver for walmart, walmart is growing extremely fast these past 3 years due to micro economics. Walmart is cutting out all dedicated and private fleets and handling their own freight as a private fleet now. Their rail services was a way to cut down months of waiting on ships to be delivered in one location, so they thought to have their own assets (trailer/chassis) in prime locations where ships will port like Chicago, baytown, san pedro, LA, florida, and etc to cut down wait times on products. This move actually saves walmart millions due to they have the products and jb can use their equipment and man power and drivers to get their products to hubs while walmart drivers focus on store deliveries and backhauls to our dc’s. Walmart is competing with amazon doing so by cutting cost by not letting outside carriers deliver their products. Walmart has team drivers, grocery drivers, GM drivers, claim drivers, local drivers, regional drivers. They are saying they are hiring another 13k drivers by 2030. England, us express, landstar, and etc will no longer be dedicated carriers for walmart when their contract ends.

I’ve been with Jb Hunt now for 14 years, my pay has more than doubled since I started and yes you can make six figures in the Regional intermodal division. They are extremely driver and veteran oriented. If you’re in the Army National Guard or reserves they’ll do every thing they can to accommodate your service needs. In my career since 92 I have worked for six other companies and none have come close to the way you’re treated in the regional intermodal division out of Joliet, IL. Great hard-working fleet managers that actually care about you and your family. Good people. I would say that whether you’re with Jb Hunt or with some other company the trick is longevity. The longer you’re there the more you will naturally be treated as part of the family. But you feel it right away with the folks in Joliet(Chicago). They also have an excellent safety program with good training, monthly and quarterly. I know I sound like a recruiter but I’ve just had a wonderful experience with the company.

Former Jb Hunt intermodal driver now with Hub Group. They get so big that they forget about the little man on the totem pole. You can have outstanding performance and be easily overlooked. They're everywhere like lantern flies but tend to be subpar operationally and technologically. Their route planning isn't always optimal. They don't care if you are trying to work more efficiently. If they see your pay package, they will merely tell that you are making a good salary. Granted this is my anecdotal observation from one location. However, they are the largest intermodal operation in North America. One would expect more.

We found out that all local drivers are moving to a different part. And focus on stores and grocery, Sam’s and online. we have the intermodal fleet for two years which nobody really cared to do intermodal. It was awesome money!!! But I will say that I worked at Jb hunt and left Jb Hunt once Walmart open their fleet for local drivers and I will say that they do not pay Jb Hunt drivers enough. But Jb Hunt has the drivers and the equipment. From my two years on inner Moto, I learned that it cost too much to maintain the chassis get a bit registration up-to-date tires changed, and there’s always problems with rail chassis. Jb Hunt has their own chassis so it’s more easier for them to move stuff without worrying.

He is with the same company but now drives for specific deliveries such as Tractor Supply for 8 months and now moved to only delivery to Home Depot. The thing he likes about it is he only drives in the South-East states and is home every weekend. I would think the Walmart drivers will still run the same routes as before, if they decide to stay with JB Hunt. I would have no clue if their money would change but I would think it would, My brother-in-law makes about 25% less now but he is home every Friday and leaves out Monday.

I believe that what is happening with the Railroad is they are going to try to do more of the interstate transport on the rail and it really could help independent owner operator become more competitive within their home state. It could have a positive effect from a regulatory standpoint, because the drivers will have a better stance against federal regulatory agencies.

This announcement isn’t new to the truck/rail agreements. All major trucking companies have been switching more and more freight to container rail shipments. Very cost effective as long as the trains are able to stay on the tracks. Derailments can be a major issue. There’s also a possibility creating dedicated trains for JB/Walmart alone.

Good Day, Many larger companies I believe are positioning themselves to protect their revenue and profits, I will explain. Let’s look at the potential impact/ruling on speed limiters in May of this year. Trucking is changing very quickly and the industry is trying to move away from true OTR work. It’s more difficult to control your labor costs from a distance, however if I see them and talk to them daily it becomes much easier. Look we all know what happens when professional truck drivers make a decent livable wage, inflation occurs. Unfortunately our industry has remained stagnant or in many instances retreated when it comes to drivers pay. Many drivers who have 25-30 years in our industry will agree the current driver pay is roughly the same now as it was 25-30 years. For drivers to make $1k-$1500 per week in 2024 is insane and criminal. If you believe that’s worth the sacrifice in 2024 we all need to go back to the drawing board and start over. Stay safe.

It’s the local drivers for Walmart that do most of the intermodal work. The intermodal work is being replaced with grocery, e-commerce etc. & actual Walmart drivers will be replacing the outside carriers/3rd party that currently do that & overall mileage (since local drivers also are cpm) is supposed to increasing by a certain percentage. What’s that gonna look like in practice is yet to be seen.

And there's been times I've been at the rail yard and took on my day and a 1/2. So what's the upside on this for the drivers? And what's the downsides? How is this gonna help the drivers?

Well one thing for sure if I ever have to register a driver complaint against a driver again -it will probably be a lot easier in the future. A long time ago I registered a complaint about a Walmart truck driver about running a red light intentionally and it took me about 1 week to get it completed. I called back to Arkansas many times, talked to people. Then I was finally directed to a company in the country of South Africa that was contracted to handle all Walmarts complaints- go figure 🤔🤔🤔. Then contacted them then arranged a conference call because of the time zone difference to officially register the complaint. Then a day later I get a call from the person that handled the drivers at their main distribution center that is located 200 miles east of where I live. As a CDL driver I didn’t give up. True story.

So whats stopping the boycott into NY, when they could just go about it this way. Barge or rail it in. Then the big companies deliver it as needed. And the current port can haulers don't have the luxury of boycotting. Though I suspect many distance drivers wouldn't mind, never going into NY again.
