Why is a woman's love equated with sacrifice, and how does Paro from 'Dev D' subvert this trope?
'Recasting' is The Swaddle’s video series where we look at characters who defy the stereotypes of Indian cinema.

Very well said! Women are portrayed as if they are born to reform a man and she is considered the best wife/lover if she does so, where she is portrayed as selfish, arrogant if she keeps her mental peace and her self respect as her priority. Man and women are equal partner If you can't respect each other better is to end the relationship. If somebody think that i want someone like preeti from kabir singh to reform me who will make me a better person than you are not in position to be in relationship. Everyone is selfish in this world in one way or other. The concept of selfless love is absurd. Love and affection should be benficial for both. If one partner is hurting and another partner is not gaining anything from the relationship then there is no point of continuing it. Leave it as soon as possible, life is too short. And women aren't the only one expected to be selfless. Society want men to provide their family without thinking about themselves first. This is so common in Indian families.

DevD is probably the best love tragedy movie ever made. It describes so accurately the various emotions that go on in the life of their characters that they can only be thought of to have been borrowed from real life examples. Even the use of various books and novels that we see Chanda reading after she herself met tragedy have been chosen so very well to show the turmoil that goes on the mind of a jittered lover. And I think that Mahi Gill was born to play This role only. Nobody else could've been more suitable to depict the kind of ravishing beauty that one falls in love for, only to be discarded later on.

just watched Meenakshi Sundareshwar on netflix which tries to project a progressive image but is really just upholding this exact selfless female lover ideal. why is it so hard to find any measure of equality and fairness in Indian love stories, and worst of all why is it so readily accepted by those making and watching these movies.

Love at its core is selfless... otherwise no parent would want a child. But that doesn't mean one must always break themselves for the sake of love and ignore their own happiness. It also doesn't mean you should destroy yourself for someone unworthy because if you can't respect yourself, you can't respect others...and love without respect means nothing

I have so many thoughts about this stereotype. I have always believed that no one should be a selfless lover. I don't believe that unconditional love is a thing. Every relationship is or at least should be a conditional relationship. It's always important to set your boundaries and know your partner's boundaries before dating them. This is why the talking period (before you start dating a person) is so important because it helps you see if you are compatible. It makes me mad the kind of message that's being sent by movies like Devdas. As though your first love has to be your last love and if you don't get to spend your life with them might as well spiral into darkness and disregard your own safety and the safety of others. I get that sometimes break-ups can be tough especially when you tragically lose the person you loved but there are healthier ways to realize and mourn your loss that doesn't involve suicide and self-harm.

You know what is triggering.... The entire society is established within the constraints of Paro serving a Dev of some sort. Regardless of education, regardless of "intelligence", regardless of class. When a woman finally puts her foot down saying, "I am done dealing with your shit" she is ostracized for doing so. The entire burden of reforming a man's questionable behavior and actions are put on the woman. It is seen as a woman's failure, and a failure of womanhood itself when she is unable, or refuses to do so. By the man of course, then his family and her's as well. An entire genre of arts can be created on the premise, "I slapped you... So what? You left... You didn't love me." You see the discussion of how that slap is a hit to the woman's self-respect and dignity is never even mentioned. The fact she left is the catalyst for said man's sorrow. The entire narrative becomes about how he was wronged. 🤣

As a voracious reader of old classic bengali literature especially the works by Sharatchandra chattopadhyay, I want to say that setting Parboti ( paro) as an example for this topic is just...a big no no. Parboti knew her worth and she never lose her dignity for Devdas. Showing Parboti and the female protagonist of Kabir Singh in same discussion...is just hilarious. You could have said some movie adaptations of Devdas not Sharatchandra's Devdas. If you have a huge fan following and people regularly visit your channel, do some research before creating anything and posting. As a Bengali reader I feel bad when someone not only fails to understand a charecter's charecterization but also discuss it in the wrong way. Parboti did go to find Devdas when she heard Devdas was dying but the point you want to make here is just wrong.

You do realize that NONE OF US have ever read Devdas? The rest of India and abroad, i.e. billions of people know Devdas from Dilip Kumar and SRK versions of DevDas. As hard as it might be for you to accept, no one ever will read Devdas. While your comment makes a meaningful contribution letting us know what the original work was, you've to accept most people watch a movie that takes 2 hours and not read a whole book. When filmmakers say the film is adapted from this novel, we assume it's a correct depiction. You can blame the creator but not the viewers to believe what is shown. However, I STILL AGREE with you that DESPITE whatever was shown, Filmy Paro was still standing up for her dignity and rights. When Dev didn't come, she took a stand. Even Aishwarya's Paro communicated it very well, that even though she wasn't happy in her marriage, she wouldn't have gone to Devdas either. DevD Paro, however was happy with her husband. And I won't compare it with Kabir Singh (despite the portrayal). Paro did stand up even in movies.

Even I am a Bengali & a voracious reader of Bengali novels..But that doesn't blind me to the fact that Devdas fails to meet the standard set by Sarat chandra's other works. And perhaps this critically condemned 'weak' novel had perfect material to be cast again & again in film versions both in Bengali & Hindi.

Also in Lakshya, Preeti Zinta's character leaves him after he ran away from his training centre and moves on with another guy. In that movie, she does play a role in transforming him, but he does it all himself. In the end, they beautifully get back together after their own character development

This movie was refreshingly amazing..... Devdas potrayed men and women as being unable to move on. In Dev D the best thing was that Paro knew how to make best of her circumstances....while Dev also learns it but in a extremely hard way. Then we have movies like Kabir Singh which again shows a guy as incapable of moving forward gets drunk, angry at everyone rather than moving on in life and he is glorified similar to Devdas. I know a girl leaving you for someone else is hard for a guy I don't think women will ever understand this. But I instead of wallowing in self pity guys need to fight back life's never easy never will be.
