@@Billshurwin the original church keeps the seventh-day Sabbath. It keeps all of God's ten commandments. When Constantine became emperor of Rome he changed the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday. Catholics made up a bunch of reasons afterwards to defend why they were breaking God's law. Including that the Sabbath is "Jewish law". I don't know what "misconceptions" you had about Catholics but America was built on religious freedom. In other words it was built on protestantism because protestants had to flee Europe because the Roman Catholic Church was executing them for herecy. The Roman Catholic Church killed approximately 50 million people using the French and completely eradicated 3 kingdoms. Think of 3 different countries.

So-called "anti-catholic" is not a bad thing to be as a matter of fact as believers, we are called to identify, call out and defend against false doctrines and blasphemy, the Apostle Paul laid it out very clearly, this is part of the Christian walk - and intra-church accountability are precisely why we have the Epistles in the first place. Catholicism is a fraud, Jesus is coming back in part to expose and destroy it, it's roughly about a third of the entire content of the book of Revelation is exposing what is ultimately going to happen to the papal 'authority' and the system of Roman Catholicism.

@@aleccullen2696 The Church is made of sinners, it is not unexpected that there is sin. Its endurance in spite of forces within and without is merely another line of evidence to this project`s Divine origin. You can dismiss, discount, or explain away the evidence as any evidence can be by the deternined opposer, but until the Church does not stand, it is valid to say that She has survived two millenia and the rise and fall of empires, cultures, and ages. And if one is going for worship of God in general, this pedigree continues for at least two millenia more.

Your presentation on the history of the Catholic Church reconfirms the church history I learned from Dominican teachers years ago. They did a good job of training me and I went on to major in history at the University Of Wisconsin. Yet today there is a segment of a very verbal minority within the church who either is not trained in church history, or is determined to misrepresent it. So thank you for presenting a very balanced and accurate picture of church history. Continue to do so. Church History 102 would be helpful to many of us. May God bless your work.

@@dvdortiz9031 You are absolutely right! One church, one faith, one tradition, one goal. The Church is one and the same all around the world. However, I think is proper to also make notice that the Church allows for some local traditions too [with proper permission, obviously]. This means that certain places can have a particular celebration on some particular day or period that may not be found or practiced in some other places. A common example would be if there is an special devotion for a saint in one locality, due to him being an important part of its history or a temple being dedicated to him or something like that, then they may celebrate that saint's particular mass on his day while others wouldn't [and rather follow the ordinary of mass]. Same goes for some rites, per example in some Eastern Catholic churches that are, technically speaking, orthodox in rite but are in communion with the Pope and the Vatican, those may practice them rites in slightly different ways, like infant baptism, where in the roman rite the priest pours water three times on the head of the infant [usually with a shell], while in some of those other rites they may quickly submerge the infant fully in water. Stuff like that, but the Church allows it for in its divine wisdom it understand the necessity for local traditions too. Other than that, we are all the exact same and profess the exact same dogmas and doctrines, as you well said. Universal, indeed!

Beautifully done. I was raised Catholic and we hung out with the nuns (I carry the name of an incredible nun who was a friend of my mom). I experienced changes of Vatican II as a youngster; then came the Jesus Movement where I gave my life to Christ in a big way; then Protestant Bible College. Church history was taught, but the focus was more on the Reformation and who came after....not much on early church fathers (guess that was for grad students). In recent years, I listen to more Catholic teachers and pastors than I do Protestants, because I feel most evangelical churches have become too entwined politically. (I know...can of worms😮) But if I have a point in all this rambling, it is that God’s Love is unconditional and His faithfulness is forever. It is the power and working of the Holy Spirit throughout history; and He is certainly working in our day. I am so grateful to get a small peek at this in my short years. Hallelujah. My prayer for all believers, no matter which denomination they are in, is to keep seeking Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, and love one another. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul and all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31. By this, the world will know we are His disciples. Thank you Fr. Casey. 🙏🙏🙏

I mean I don't really expect protestant to be logical when you are either beliving in predestination, which is nonsense or follow Sola Scruptura which is unbiblical in itself. Etc. Anyway, your heart is closed, so I won't try to convince you. Facts are that Catholics do not worship Mary, but venerate her as she was mother of Jesus. No1 calls her godess or something. That is why it isn't idolatry - as some protestant say, that are unable to read. Idolatry is a sin of worshiping other gods. Mary is not worshipped and she is not consider a god. Call it praising or venerating. I know you will keep denying the truth because protestantism has it's foundation on strawmening other religions but you have a free will to do as you please. I was a cradle Christian. That is, I went to church with my parents and my siblings because that's just what people did on Sunday morning. I hadn't given a lot of hard thought to what I actually believed until I found a book by C.S. Lewis in a boot-camp library. That book was "Mere Christianity". As soon as I could, I bought my own copy. Since then, I've bought every book written by C.S. Lewis that I could find. He had a talent for defending Christian theology in clear and entertaining terms that made sense to me, and gave force to my faith; lending logic and reason to the prompting of my conscience. Then, though C.S. Lewis, I found the writing of G.K. Chesterton. His point of view added humor and emotion to my understanding of Christian theology. I still hunt for more copies of his works, whether in hard copy or digital, because I believe he still has more to teach me. Keep learning, brothers!

Excellent initial considerations. Good summary and starting point. Vat2 was probably not bad in itself but the Concilium that came after it has been a major blow to catholicism in itself and has caused more damage than is often thought. Thx for the video.

i love studying history and i am particularly fascinated by our church history. as you were reeling it out i was thinking about the next moment and you said it. i think you did a terrific job in capturing the high points of the growth of the church. the church is not static. it grows and has to grow or it will die. she is an organic encompassing expression of christianity and needs to be nurtured, and prodded but not scorned to trying the best to do the best. many blessings. thank you. fr. casey

A mistake. During the reign of Constantine, christianity was allowed, the Church received many gifts, the emperor summoned the Council of Nicea, but christiany was not the official religion of the empire. You must wait until Theodosius the Great (380-395) to see christianity becoming the official religion and paganism forbidden.

I have a question about FUTURE Church affairs, if you don't mind terribly. Have you heard anything about when all of the Franciscans in the U.S. will finally unite in one large Province and where the new Headquarters will be located?

Great video Fr, however, it was Theodosius I who made Christianity the official religion in 380 AD :)

It seems that there is debate about this. If you search "official religion of Rome" into Google, the first thing that comes up is an article from PBS saying Constantine did this in 325, followed by a few others corroborating this. I was taught this in my church history class, but other sites mention Theodosius. I'm guessing there were similar decrees in each time, the second one taking root.

I think Theodosius must have made Christianity the official religion. Constantine being a politician may not have made such a sweeping change even before the majority of the population had converted to Christianity. Some of the monuments constructed during the early phase of his reign had depicted the Roman gods. BTW, Constantine himself is supposed to have been baptised just before his death.

The word Catholic is derived from the Greek adjective, katholikos, meaning "universal," and from the adverbial phrase, kath' holou, meaning "on the whole." The first use of the term "Catholic Church" (literally meaning "universal church") was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (c. 110 AD). Seeing the church was spreading in multiple nations He termed it Catholic-universal-church. The true church founded by Jesus Christ have Bishops and Deacons. Philippians 1:1 KJV Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the BISHOPS and DEACONS.
