Do you really know how to breathe? Did you know we don't actually breathe from our belly even though EVERYONE talks about belly breathing?! Learning how to breathe from the right muscles and efficiently is a game changer. So, do you know what muscle is the main driver of breathing? Hint...it does not exist in your belly.

Lori, this is one of the most insightful videos on youtube. Thank you for proving that over 90% of Yoga instructors, meditation teachers and alike don’t know what they’re talking about when they recommend belly breathing or should I say “stomach breathing”. ❤

I just think it needs to have a different cue and that will fix SO much of this. Thanks for the comment.

This makes so much sense to me… you are pulling your air between the chest and right where your stomach starts.

Gosh, I have worked for a year to try to make my stomach move when I breathe. Now I'm trying to unlearn it. My poor brain is so confused.

Isn't she supporting diaphragmatic breathing? And that's what people call belly breathing right? So u need not unlearn it 🤔

The belly is the lower part of the abdomen. That part moves very little during the breath. The main movement originates in the abdomen where the lungs are located. At least that is how I understand it.

Your belly will move somewhat during a diaphragmatic breath, even if you don’t follow the over-corrective belly breathing method.

I’ve experienced trauma 2 yrs ago. I’ve done some research and I figured out I haven’t been able to calm my somatic nerve because my breathing is off (after experiencing said trauma). This helps, I will try it out… thank you 🙏🏾

Thank you so much: my chest always felt too heavy so my breathing was always shallow and I never understood what the yoga instructors meant by belly breathing. Thank you

Oh my God this really works. Thank you so much. When I put the elbows to the side of my ribs and breathed using the diaphragm. I was able to take a deep, calming breath. Once you know which area to use as a starting point, your belly expands yes, but there's no strain since you're not pushing from there. Same with the chest, there's a bit of movement with diaphrgamic breathing and the back area of my ribs moves too.

I see belly breathing as a term for exercise. The act of not using the diaphragm overly that will cause shallow breathing due to less air intake so as an exercise it would harm the body

I get tachycardia when I exercise. Heart checked out normal. Is it a diaphragm breathing issue?

Hmm...I'm not sure. Try using your diaphragm to breathe and see if it changes your heart rate. Let me know!

Yes belly breathing is not actually very functional. Breathe incorrectly for long enough you’re whole Thoracic cage will freeze, muscles severely weaken and you f#cked in more ways you’d ever thought possible. Chronic headache, frozen shoulder, back pain, neck pain, every kinda pain you can imagine.

Why learn to breathe properly? The average person breathes 16X a minute. If a person lives to 80, then that means on average they will take 672,768,000 breaths in a lifetime!

Who says the 'belly breath' drives the breathing and not the diaphragm? I think the belly is emphasized in Yoga and other disciplines because it is an indicator of correct and full and relaxed natural breathing. As an exercise to show this, wrap your arms around your belly and hold it in, then breath in deep. You can still breath, however if you are unhealthy your inbreath will be small and strained. BTW, I bet most people with breath issues are wearing ill fitting clothing that constrains their belly movement.

Hi! SO many people think the belly drives the breath; thus my video. Even my kiddo came home and said he was taught to "breath into his belly" for relaxation. It's just a weird cue that has confused most people. You might be right about the clothing. Mostly I just don't think people are cued correctly; when they are it is a game changer. Thanks for the comment!

This is the definition of ignorance, you speak with certainty on things you have never experienced. I guarantee I have three times your lung capacity. When I breath and expand my entire torso from pelvic floor to collar bones I become so relaxed my mind completely silences. In that silence there is a endless sea of bliss just waiting to engulf and sooth me. When finished I am absolutely bristling with vitality, more at peace than you have ever been, I can tell from your personality. Can you do that? Do you have access to infinite bliss? Didn't think so. How can you speak on breathing when you've never taken a complete breath in your life?
