Dominic from dominiccolenso.com here and in this video I want to share with you some breathing exercises for confident public speaking.
Breathing is really important for making you sound and feel confident when you are in front of an audience.
The first thing you should think about is the placement of your breath. A common mistake that people make when they are nervous is to start breathing up into the chest. This increases the adrenaline flowing around your system and you enter into ‘fight or flight mode’.
The best way to overcome your nerves is low breathing. Use your diaphragm by relaxing your stomach muscles and allow your breath to drop in and fill your lungs. Use your ribs and the intercostal muscles too, like you’re filling up a barrel!
The simple breathing exercise I share in this video will help you to calm yourself down before a presentation. What you are actually doing is lowering your cortisol levels (your stress hormone) and at the same time increasing your testosterone levels (your confidence hormone) so it’s an absolute win-win!
I hope that you find my breathing exercise for confident public speaking useful. Please share your comments with me in the box below and I'd love to hear about any other tricks that work for you.
Keep shining (and breathing)!
Dominic

crazy thing is i have anxiety when speaking in front of groups, BUT if i could just control my voice and stop it shaking and keep it calm i really wouldnt care about anything else. The anxiety feeling is not an issue, its just my voice.

Xbot4Life Often our own perception of what is happening is very different what our audience experiences. I'd be surprised if you audience notice your trembling voice as much as you do. Try working on your breathing first as the breath is the fuel for the voice. I'd love to hear how you get on. Keep shining! Dominic

Xbot4Life The real trick is to believe what your saying bring it from not just the mouth bring it from inside, feeling is the key belief and confidence repetition. Have belief and you can find the rest.

Is it only me, or do you always worry about when to swallow as much as you worry about taking a deep breathe while public speaking? Because when ever I’m nervous while presenting something, I always salivate like crazy...

Hi Rebecca. :) Public speaking is about A) The message, and B) The presentation. If you know your subject people will applaud. Unfortunately, even the best message can be buried by a poor and painful presentation. This is what I suggest you do in addition to the advice in this video. Practice by standing up and reciting the alphabet out loud. When it comes to the speech, well you know the alphabet by heart. This allows you to focus on pronunciation, breathing, hand movements, and even practice with eye contact. Do this exercise a hundred times! You'll soon master all the points of public speaking. In the future, your words will flow as well, if you know your subject. P*E*A*C*E

I used to confidently speak in front of our class when doing presentations before the pandemic but now I don't know what just happened to me. Now my anxiety keeps taking over me when reading in front of a crowd. My breathing becomes out of control and my voice keeps shaking when reading so I stutter some of the words. I want to change this does anyone have any advice?

Great videos. Very helpful. The problem I am having is I have to recite a 7 minute dissertation that has to be word for word and memorized! I am more at ease doing public speaking where I can ad-lib and say everything on my own words. When I'm trying to deliver something that is memorized, I get major brain blanks! I thoroughly know the subject matter. I've memorized everything. I just literally go blank where I can't think of anything.!!

Sameeee i just wish my voice wouldn’t shake, that’s all. I’m ok with feeling nervous, I’m ok with my hands shaking a bit and I’m ok with sometimes mispronouncing something and having to correct myself, the only thing I want is for my voice to not shake and sound like I’m about to cry and can’t breath but I haven’t been able to fix it and I’m just so sick of it sounding like that in every presentation I do

@@Yami-ss4xi The vocal area is controlled by the Vagus nerve which also is connected with your facial muscles, heart, emotion and much more. I practice vocal exercise every morning with this video ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdFho92Y3pabiok.html). It helped strengthening my vocal cord and deepening my breath. The bonus factor is that the vagus nerve gets strengthened by doing so as well. Or google " how to tone vagus nerve" and follow a few recommendations. Good luck.

Many times, I was stammering with some sound like k, t, r while I was speaking in front of my class or I read out the alphabet. Sometimes, I have to stop for awhile to put my tongue at the right place and control my breath before saying a new sentence. It is kinda frustrating, but in some days, when I wake up in the morning, I can speak really well at that time with my parents and my friends in college. I don’t know why but after the morning, I am not good at speaking. I feel like I left no oxygen to speak. :((( can someone helps me!!!

maybe You're keeping the air in the chest area. Don't forget to use the stomach , put your hands on it and start slow. Breathe normally without counting at first and then start adding the 4-7-8 breathing ( 4 secs in , 7 secs hold , 8 secs out )
