The mites are attracted to grains so will end up in the colony if using oats, and just infest it. They are also known to already be in bags of oats or at least the eggs, so its difficult to avoid it also.

THANK YOU For mentioning about the moisture and how too much moisture will cause the meal worms slow down and even die. I just started raising meal worms that a friend gave me and they were pretty active when I first got them. but because I live in the desert, and it’s a very dry climate, I was misting the box ever so slightly every two or three days. Apparently, while that seems like a good idea in a dry climate… it’s not? Mealworms must like it extra dry? And it took me about a dozen videos before I got to yours, which mentioned this issue. So thank you!

White beetles as in the pupae? Or right after they emerge? If you mean when they emerge, they turn blsck within a few hours/days, so they will start eating when they are ready. You can feed them carrots, lettuce, etc

Without a picture i cant say what they are but based on what you raise mealworms in it could be some type of flower beetle, or maybe dermestid beetles. They could be bad and they could make competition or overrun the colony.

If the beetles die off, why do you need to sift the babies into another container. Could you just leave them in the oats and container with the dead beetles?
@OutdoorsAndBotanical
@OutdoorsAndBotanical 3 жыл бұрын
You could but dead beetles attract mites and can rot, also sometimes not all beetkes die right away and will eat the babies. Or maybe you want to have a very large colony of beetles so you have a lot of live ones still when you need to separate the babies, so you have to sift them out to seperate

what is a bug burger that you seem to say we can use as food for the mealworms toward the beginning of the video. i had given up on mealworms last night. but you are getting me going again. hahaha. i dont know if i can do this. i hope so. it looks difficult. people talk about spending $100 on sifters. what sifters do I need besides the common kitchen one you use in this video. i have those. they say a 3.5 mm sifter will separate out the pupa. I thought it too hard to grow up north. they want warmth. 25 to 27 centigrade or 77 F to 84 F. to grow best. my house is cold all winter. I have the house at 55 F. I think 55 is too cold for them.
@OutdoorsAndBotanical
@OutdoorsAndBotanical 2 жыл бұрын
55 might be a tad cold for them but im sure you can still do it. Maybe use a heat lamp or pad near them. Bug burger is a repashy brand powder that you can buy and make into a gel for the worms to eat. And i just use a kitchen sifter but i dont exactly know the size. I just bought a cheap dollar store one with holes small enough that the beetles and oats wouldnt fall through

I would have just left them in the container that they were in with the Beatles and just took out all the dead beetles and if there's some that weren't dead I would just wait until they died and then I'd wait until the meal worms were bigger and I can see them better and I would pick out some of the oats so there would be less substrate.
@OutdoorsAndBotanical
@OutdoorsAndBotanical 3 жыл бұрын
Thats also a way to do it, i like to get them into less substrate right away so its easier for them to find food though.

Have you delbt with grain mites yet ? If you have, what’s yer process of elimination ??
@OutdoorsAndBotanical
@OutdoorsAndBotanical 3 жыл бұрын
Usually i just burn the house down and move, but sometimes you can get rid of them by basically cleaning everything. Theres no easy way to eliminate them. Get rid of the affected containers and use soapy water to clean everything else. Then in the future put your containers in a tray with dietomaceus earth.
@UnisausS1

@OutdoorsAndBotanical
@OutdoorsAndBotanical 3 жыл бұрын
No the dietomaceus earth kills the mites so you lay a tray of it out and sit the containers with your mealworms on top its like a barrier not a substrate. When the mites walk across it to the tub it cuts them up and suffocates then and they die. Its pretty hard to see the mites, usually you dont notice until its too late and they are everywhere. Important thing is to check regularily. Once a weak or more take some substrate out and spread it on a piece of black paper and try and spot some mites. Also check on the carrots or whatever food you put in to see if mites are on it. If they are rly bad you will see them. Its like moving dust all over the container

Hey, when breeding mealworms the beetles live for a few weeks, lay eggs then die. When i put beetles into a breeding bin i wait until the majority are dead before sorting them because that guarantees to me that they have laid all their eggs, and there will for sure be babies.
