Though im not too familiar with those terms, it is standard. With the dwarf gene, it will always be the same percentage of chance and very simple. I never kept the rabbits with non dwarf-non dwarf because they typically carry more babies and I was so small scale at the time-okay with smaller litters. I no longer raise dwarfs, but a small non-dwarf breed. There is a higher survival rate. I got the rabbits from Bob Anderson-no longer is he into rabbits, but I sold them all and switched to the Polish breed. Videos on Polish will come soon. I can still share knowledge about netherlands too if need be!

very informative... I'm not a breeder... I just like netherland dwarfs as pets. I like the ears just a little bit longer than the mother you have, not too long... just a wee bit longer... Your baby is sweet and seems happy...

Very informative. I am glad you switched to another breed. I am pretty shocked about the rate of deaths and deformaties that occur. I just got a ND, but I now doubt if I feel it is a responsible way to go, buying such rabbits when for every healthy kit there are so many suffering siblings.

You have to go with what you feel is best for you! I personally don’t think anything less of dwarf breeders, but for me its just not worth all of the extra heartache and stress. Netherlands still have my heart, but I’ll likely never raise them again.

So we're talking pretty standard Mendelian inheritance then? What has been your experience with homozygous non-dwarfs? And are you familiar with exactly where the genes are located. Sorry, molecular biologist here, had to ask.

I got a jersey wooly that was pregnant (the breeder didint tell me) and she gave birth in the middle of the night. All three kits where born dead, and big. I’ve seen people saying that it’s “normal” for the first time to be like this, but it was awful and I’m considering getting another breed.
@amarahsrabbitry1073 Жыл бұрын
It can be normal no matter what the breed for a doe to struggle the first time or two. Some does get it right away, but most have struggles off the bat. Including dead or scattered kits, bad nesting, or failure to care for them.

@Kali Yes, you may breed siblings. However, repetitive inbreeding can become a problem. So while you can breed siblings, or parents to kits, it is important to throw some other genetics in the mix by "outsourcing" to completely different lines.

How long have you been raising dwarfs?
@amarahsrabbitry10735 жыл бұрын
Pics and Psaltery Studios I raised Nethies from age 12-15 when I switched to Polish age 15-18.

That is so cool. I have been raising dwarfs for 2 1/2 years now, and now I have picked up Mini Rex. I only wish that I found out about this hobby sooner.

Its absolutely a fulfilling hobby. I love breeding toward excellence. Netherland Dwarfs are very hard to breed but they are so much fun.

Ah, yes. I have most definitely found that out. The hard way. :) But, so true. They are tons of fun to breed.

Max factor bring in a good looking bunny but will have terrible healthy issue? Do I understand you correctly? So what would you do with a baby carrying Max factor ?
@amarahsrabbitry10732 жыл бұрын
So let me explain-a rabbit that carries one recessive max factor gene will appear completely normal! However if both parents carry this recessive and pass it down, you can get kits who have 2 max factor genes, resulting in abnormalities and deformities. However some breeders claim that the max factor as a single recessive makes the carrier better in quality. I personally do not think that its worth it. So, I will avoid breeding two known carriers to reduce deformed kits.

@@amarahsrabbitry1073 how do you know when a bunny has max factor genes?
@amarahsrabbitry1073 Жыл бұрын
@@giovana4789 The only way to know is through breeding… you get a Max kit when BOTH parents carry the recessive Max Factor gene. There is no other way to really know except through test breeding. Problem is, if one parent has the gene they can pass that recessive gene down silently to some of their offspring, even if the other parent doesn’t carry it.

I have two does they are sisters from the same litter one, ticklelick, is smaller than miss bean she also has a more squished face and short ears she has produced smaller framed bunnies and a lot more which makes some smaller not because they are peanut bc there is a lot that some don’t get as much nutrients. miss bean produced smaller to perfect size litters her first was 2 (one was a peanut I believe he died at three weeks) and her second (recent) had four babies she gives birth to large fat healthy bunny’s that tend to have rounder faces but not squished and small to medium ears they are broader framed but still quite small (abit bigger than ticklelicks babies)
@amarahsrabbitry10732 жыл бұрын
They are both true dwarves, but one is just a bit smaller and maybe typier! Sometimes the smaller typier does can be more difficult to get good litters out of. If she is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller, she may have been a runt. But she should still have the capability of feeding her babies, they are probably just smaller too!

can you breed netherland dwarf siblings?
@picsandpsalterystudios9965 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. Unless they came from a different buck. If they came from the same parents, then you can't.
