BreenGrub has become some of the most interesting aspects of the Half-Life franchise. Laidlaw decides to expand Breen's story through an ominous Twitter account rather than making a game or anything else. Half Life also has one of the most complicated antagonists ever, the Combine empire being a Type 7.0 Civilization that stretches across several multiverses and maybe even timelines. It only took seven hours for the Combine to invade Earth and force every human superpower to surrender. Their only weakness is their lack of shorthand teleportation, but they have longhand teleportation to take care of that. The only Combine you fight in the game are reformatted animals and humans that were all that remained of Earth's militaries after the Combine's initial invasion.

@@dkkanofkash8798 "but they have longhand teleportation to take care of that." I thought they were only using interdimensional travel. That they are relatively localized in realspace, and that they where not a multi-galaxy empire.

@@anorouch They are a multi-galaxy, multi-dimensional empire with the ability to teleport in-between dimensions. All other travel, including between and within galaxies, has to be done physically and takes time.

Yeah.. it is. It suggests interesting implications of what the Combine is and how it functions, and what role the Advisors hold in their hierarchy. A slave with slightly more authority than the other slaves. But still a slave nonetheless.

@@damonnugent1993 The idea of freedom is unknown to the Combine it seems. They are all "slaves" in a sense. Humans are worst off as they have not yet been fully integrated into the Universal Union; nor have a specific area of expertise: should we, as a species, become blue collar workers for the Combine? Soldiers? Scientists? Or do they have species which share functions; are there variations of striders who work as scientists? lol Either way, Breen wishes humans can be part of the Empire, that's why him and the System seems so pushy towards the transhuman forces, the common citizen and Dra.Mossman not fucking up and showing their merit.

It's what I expected and hoped for to be honest. Having it be some cosmic horror of an empire, with a hierarchy so massive common citizens cannot even begin to comprehend it. Perhaps the advisors are the lowest in that hierarchy, low enough to actually risk their lives visiting occupied worlds. Perhaps the masters of the combine have no idea what is happening, suspended in some sort of infinite pleasure space, leaving their enslaved species to do all their work for them. Perhaps they have even gone extinct, and their armies of machine and flesh still carry on their orders to infinitely expand for no reason at all. Because of all these theories I really like the combine as a faction, one very different from any other video game or story of fiction in general, and if HL3 ever comes out I hope it will expand theese concepts

I always liked Dr. Breen as the antagonist. Something funny about a familiar old man in charge of the entire Earth's population.

Wow! This is a really interesting video! I love the Breengrub lore. It's creepy and for some reason reminds me of GLaDOS from the Portal series. Imagine fighting the Breengrub and his larval form hatches into an all powerful psychic god-like Butterfly with giant wings.

In the original HL2 Episode 3 story, you meet Breengrub in the Arctic, where he explains who he is, and begs Freeman to kill him to end his suffering. Alyx is still angry at Breengrub, and tells Gordon to leave him. It’s left up to the player whether to kill Breen or not.

@@DoctorpooandtheTURDIS Precisely. lol The Advisors do resemble caterpillars tucked inside cocoons if you look closely. So the grubs could be in a metamorphosis of sorts, the Breengrub twitter did say that the Combine keep them in hibernation, maybe it's to keep them from growing out of control and becoming a threat to them? The final stage of an Advisor could be similar to the Gman for all we know, telepathic psychic influence, mind control, subconscious programming, (using Alyx to send her father a warning in EP2) creating false illusions, visions and dreams and being able to warp space and time with your thoughts. (Slowing Gordon and Alyx's perception of time at the end of HL2, showing a projection of Black Mesa to Gordon in the beginning of HL2)

I'm almost sure that Marc Laidlaw's BreenGrub account was the result of Episode Three's development going nowhere and he just went mad a bit. It will always saddens me that we will never play his original vision of Episode Three/Half-Life 3. And his release of Epistle 3 might have been why they "created" a second time-line (God I hate when franchises do that) in the VR game.

If future games release, it probably won't have the same feeling. It's a shame Marc Laidlaw left. With HL: A now being considered canon now, a lot of Marc's hidden lore has effectively been retconned. Although, it's what he wanted, so you can't really be too mad about it.
