Now if only I could harness my inner Brendan and go to Patagonia to photograph those fantastic trees 😄. Such a great combination of colour, texture, and character there. One thing I have done in the past to photograph old, gnarly trees is wait until night. Compose an image in daylight, and remember (at least try to...) where you set your tripod, and how high. Come back at night and set the camera up again. Then open the shutter, for several seconds. While the shutter is open, sweep over the tree with the light from a torch. You will have to experiment to get the amount of light right, but with digital cameras this costs nothing but time. You may want to try various different light sources, since they have different effects on the final image. Also, the distance between the light source and tree matters, as does the distance between the tree and the background. But again, experimentation costs nothing but time.

Went on a photography course run by Scottish photographer Colin Prior - one session was his “order out of chaos” in a very special Celtic rainforest. For the first few hours complete bewilderment - by the end of the session it was like being on another planet where you were constantly visually distracted by seeing patterns and ideas everywhere. Think this vid very nicely captures that getting your eye trained process.

I often say "Sometimes the eye sees a picture, but my camera doesn't"...but you certainly found a few gems, the square crops were great! Wish you'd taken 'one' picture of the waterfall.

30 years into photography... It is the first time I hear the term "woodland photography". Never too old to learn.

I've been to that location a couple times already, and it's a tough one! The colors and contorted trunks are beautiful to the eyes, but often way too chaotic/noisy for photos! And it's hard to get fog, which's an element that's very common in great woodland photography (since it helps a lot in hiding the chaos). There's usually so many fallen trunks and branches, high grass, etc, that makes it extra challenging. But you still did great, so congratulations!

I do woodland photography, but as soon as you took us into this woodland, I’m like whoa!!! Too chaotic 💯‼️. I’m glad you went for the closer, isolated compositions near the end 👍🏻

Never question that you are a great photographer. I love your work. You got better and better as you pushed yourself to get as one/ and relax into your environment. Only good/great photographers can do that under pressure.

I feel your pain Brendan ,woodland is difficult ....no matter what Mr Baxter would have us believe 😁 The image with the leaf movement worked for me ,different with striking colors 👍 I struggle in woodland unless its foggy or snowing 😅

Love this video for how experimental it is. Strongly reminds me of my experiences shooting with a new method, unfamiliar lens length, or a new type of subject -- tons of experimentation, tons of failure, then things start to piece together and one or two shots give you an itch to try it more.

The image at the end with the red leaves and the wind is interesting and the image prior to it was great. The red colors sure give the images a Canadian Fall vibe🍁 imo. it's definitely a honed craft when it comes to woodland photography and one I have tried and struggled with too but that's the challenge of photography by keeping us going back again to try once more. I liked the one at 10:43 as it was a nice arrangement with the trees and the colours contrasting against each other

Some fantastic colours , woodland is a very difficult genre indeed , however like you have found it is enjoyable and when you get that image, really rewarding , some really nice images, keep doing what you enjoy i say !

There are two things you didn’t have that Simon uses to his advantage. Unfortunately you are a long ways from home. Simon uses the weather elements, like fog, to make his tree images standout. The second, and most important, is Meg his dog. She finds the best places to take tree photos. Simon lets her out of the car and follows her wherever she wants to go. I love his dog and his photos. My problem is finding good trees. It seems like where I live the tree trunks are straight as an arrow. I need to find old growth trees that have some curves to them. As far as the pictures you displayed your favorite tree image looked like the red leaves were actually red flames. I thought you did very good. I enjoy your images!

oh man so many times have I decided the light is crap so ill move into the woods. I tried the woodland shots like you for years but I don't think ive taken a good shot yet. I always resort to picking out details and sticking the zoom lens on! I feel your pain Brendan. Thanks for taking us along with it!

I Just Love to See Your Photography

I love trees and being in and around trees. Photographing them, is just too hard, there's too many trees and wood. As the old saying goes, cant see the wood for the trees? I think you have to have a special talent or perspective to do woodland photography and be able to isolate things. I don't have that talent lol. Loved the image at about 12 minutes in!

you should check the work of "alexandre deschaumes" french photographer who took woodland pictures in that place to another level.

Re the photo at 9:30: those foreground leaves should have been in focus. OTOH you could crop then out and have a pano image of just the tree and background. I have a similar image framed at home. Edit: those images near the end are a big improvement. That's what I'm talking about!

I can never find a picture in the woods unless I shoot straight up or straight down

I’m far from being an expert, very far 😂 but Woodland photography is very difficult as it’s often chaotic. It’s often a case of simplifying the scene if possible. Another thing that helps dramatically is atmosphere, mist ,fog or dappled backlight or sidelight. If all else fails, look closer 😉 Good woodland photographers have a trained eye for sure. I liked a few of your efforts Brendan despite being out of your comfort zone. Whenever I attempt woodland shots I look for contrast between the subject and the background and cut out the sky almost entirely 🤔

Good Job. Bonsai “small Japanese tree😂. Atmosphere always help in the forest. I always feel you need more tools for woodland photography namely a “chainsaw” 😂. Last two images were really good.
