I have fought both of these men and I can first hand it was a thrill, Frank is a much more patient fighter with perfect timing while Naka is lightening fast and aggressive. They are budo fighters!

I agree . I faced and fought Naka on a course in York many years ago and he was very fast and direct . I was comprehensively beaten to be honest . I had no idea who he was at the time , but you live and learn . 🤷‍♂️

I have fighted against Franck in 82 at Crystal Palace (wasa ari first for me, ippon for him at the end). For me, he is one of the best karatekas during eighties and neventies.

I think movement was different and angled more back then . Watch Elwyn Hall and his angles and speed . I just think today is a poor example of fighting and designed for fast tag fighting . I really don’t believe today’s karateka in the WKF could have handled someone like Hall . He really was extremely fast and innovative.

Tricky judgement call, that one. At first glance, I would've given it to Naka, but in the replay, it looks like his foot brushed Brennan whereas Brennan's counter landed squarely.

Frank brenan. Simplesmente o melhor. Esse naka aí sei não . Fraquinho.frank e bruto.

I think Brennan got two waza-ari. The first time, Naka tried a mae geri but Brennan caught it and got a waza-ari for a gyaku zuki counter. Second time, Naka mistimed a low yoko geri slightly, so it brushed off Brennan and Brennan landed a chudan mawashi geri - probably not clean enough for an ippon, but enough for a second waza-ari. To be honest, Naka should've got a warning for that below the belt kick at 01:00 - that looked like an attack at the hip joint, which I don't think is permitted.

That last point is questionable - purely because of the light-contact nature of point fighting. Sure, Brennan's counter-kick is stronger and clearer. But Naka's kick does land squarely - if lightly - just before Brennan sweeps the foot away with his hand. Light touches like that are often scored. Even in this bout, a light touch by Brennan at 0.25 is counted as a score. So what actually constitutes a legitimate "hit"? Somewhat open to interpretation - and that is the problem.
@ClydeRowing
@ClydeRowing 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Many of the old school guys grouse about modern kumite lacking power, being too showy etc, but honestly modern karateka are just finding the logical conclusion to win a game that the old school guys designed! I'm not saying there is not a place for light/semi contact sparring, but making it a competitive event renders it open to interpretation and possible ridicule.

If the techniques were delivered without venum they should never ever have been scored . You had to go at maximum speed and power and have control . I know as I competed then and later did some refereeing and coached with the EKGB

To both fighters. I say great job on the attack and defense To Sensei Frank: Another fine job. Looks like the dojo training is paying off. To Sensei Naka: You know what you have to do. Come back harder at the dojo.

Pieto Bembo yes both are over as in there tournament careers .But you really carnt put him in same class as Frank Brennan . Technically Frank could score with numerous different kicks & punches where most where solely reliant on few techniques. The late Master Nakayama said Frank was the best outside of Japan & even the Japanese could not score ipons like Sensei Frank Brennan . Sensei Tanka said that the Japanese built there whole squad on purposely beating Sensei Frank Brennan . That is how highly they rated him . Check out his Mawashi geri on Mori at just age of just 17 years old in World Karate Championships . His technique is absolutely perfect .
