Staring at a box of these very slugs as I write this. I cannot find anywhere on the box that says nothing tighter than improved cylinder. I shoot these out of a full choke gun all the time and it is hands down the most accurate and has yet to date caused any damage. Choke measures the same now as the day I got it. They may say best accuracy out of IC or CYL but the reason the ribs (rifling) are on the outside is to allow them to pass through any reasonable choke restriction.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected. I got my information from the seller's website where I bought the slugs. Midway USA states in the description box of these slugs, you can look them up and see that I am not making this up- " Brenneke recommends chokes no tighter than cylinder bore or improved cylinder when shooting their slugs." So that's what I went by. However after reading your comment I went to the manufacture's website (like I should have done in the first place) and indeed, much like Foster slugs, Brenneke says "The purpose of the ribs on the outside diameter of the slug (with the exception of the 3- inch Gold Magnum/Magnum Crush and the all brass Super Sabot which are designed for rifle barrel shotguns only) allows them, unlike most competitors slugs, to be used with any choke. As the slug passes through the three constricted areas, inside of the barrel, the Forcing Cone, Inside Bore, and then the Choke, the excess lead is squeezed into the gaps between the ribs with no damage to the barrel. Somewhat better accuracy may be noted when using the more open choke - Improved Cylinder." So again I stand corrected. I will correct this on during this weekends "meat target" test. Thanks for letting me know.

@@buffalosoutdoors I didn't mean to sound nitpicky or critical. Thanks for correcting it. I live in Illinois which is a mandatory slug state for deer. There is a lot of old wives tales out there that are taken as gospel regarding slugs that I find irritating. Keep up the good work, I enjoy what you're doing.

When you remembered to put your glasses on I expected you to go "AHA! Gotcha!" Longer slugs do tend to waggle around a little bit, but you can see it doesn't affect accuracy.

In an upcoming video I loaded some Maksnipe slugs with three different powder loads. The third load was WAY too hot for the design and the slugs swung like pendulums down range, and affected accuracy quite a bit.

For some reason your Remington Slug video showed up on my youtube page, I subscribed. The Brenneke's are the best way to go if shooting a smooth bore shotgun. My old Remington 1100 with a slug barrel loved them. Back in the 1970s, there were a lot fewer deer in the State of CT than now, you could only hunt with rifles on private property. We hunted a lot just to get one shot. Not surprised on how well they shot for you in that 410. In the old days, we would carry a couple in our pocket while pheasant hunting just incases a deer would show up. How times have changed in the last 44 years. Now it's not a question of if you might get a shot it's how many do you want to put in the freezer. I got two, I still can hunt till the end of January. I got plenty for the year. I got a half a hog and a 1/4 side of beef coming. Since I live close to the shore, I just go to the docks for fresh fish whenever I want it. not like Alaska where I use to live, I would go catch to halibut and spend what little time I had on Salmon then go shoot some Black Tail Deer and maybe a moose. And I would be set. I don't miss the moose hunting, that is more work than I can handle now, since I hunt alone. I was 54 when I shot my last one, going to be 64 in a few more weeks.

Nice shooting there . I remember when I was young the four of us (me, My bother, father and mother) would go out hunting me and my brother had 22’s. Father 12 gauge, mother had a 4-10 it was rifled bolt action and every choke known to man . The only reason why I remember this was because I was the one that had to clean the guns every time we went out . But the name of the gun I don’t remember. Mother and my father are both gone now . So can’t ask them . But Iam going to ask my uncles if they remember. Then I will get back to you . It also held 3 rounds . Great video I will be watching more of them .

Thanks for posting this, I know these videos require a lot of set up and editing. I definitely agree those are the slugs to use, and those wadcutter style shoulders are gonna tear a big hole in anything they hit! Wish I could do some testing with the meat target, I really like the idea but ribs are expensive enough to eat, let alone shoot! Love that gun, great video Buffalo!! 👍🏻

@buffalosoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! You're right they do require a lot of time to set up and edit but I get a lot joy from doing it. If I were limited to only having a .410 these would be my go to for single projectile launching! They performed much better than the rifled Remington slugs from a couple of weeks ago. You're right about the ribs being expensive! Which is why you've never seen me use them here on the channel. You eat them down to the BONE first then use them..LOL

Thanks, Buffalo. I have been very curious about the Brenneke slug in 410. I think the loads you were shooting were 3 inch shells. I sure hope they make the slugs in 2 1/2 inch. I am puzzled by the popularity of the Foster slugs, given how fragile they seem to be. Bring on the 410!!

@buffalosoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Man it sure is a lot of fun Uncle Dan! The thing about the Judge or the Circiut Judge is that they are actually .45 barrels. They just have longer chambers so you can shoot .410 out of em. A .410 slug most likely wouldn't even engage the rifling of a .451 (or whatever they are) bore.

Go with the Advocate Judge. It shoots both .45 Colt/410, it is accurate with both 410 and .45 Colt. With being lightweight and relatively low recoil, it's easy on the shoulder, and fun to shoot. It's somewhat pricey, at around 600.00 plus, but it has become my go to camp gun. Hope this has been helpful.

I probably won't use them for much other than shooting stuff like appliances...lol but if I had a .410 and didn't have a rifle I'd use them for varmints and predators at 50 yards and in. I'd feel comfortable taking a whitetail deer at that range as well with these. I'm don't play video games anymore but God of War was my favorite PS2 game back when it came out (2004 or 2005? I can't remember for sure). I got hooked on it and played it after work (I worked night shift at the time) every day for like a week until I beat it.

Funny you mention appliances, I’m about to take my refrigerator out back and put a 10ga slug in its failing parts! Oh wow okay, so it’s quite the multipurpose slug then. People really do underestimate .410! Oh man, yeah I think G.O.W came out in 03 or 04, but it was such a stress reliever of a game when you get right down to it. I don’t know what that says about me, but oh well it gets addicting too when you first start playing it. In the new game on PS4 Kratos is a Dad now (if you can picture THAT?!) and goes up against Norse mythology......Thor, Odin....etc. I did an overnight stint for a year, and on your off nights video games are like the only thing to do at 3:30 in the morning! LOL

We don't have that here. In fact years ago, I loaded a 410 with three muzzleloader balls for my wife for the "Short range deer season" she got a whitetail doe with it. It worked great, but she was only about 40 feet from it. No long shots with something like that!The short range weapons season has to be muzzle loader, shotgun, or archery only. I think crossbow might be legal, but I'm not sure. They have since added handguns with straight walled cartridges not originally designed for rifles. I have a 44wcf, 44/40.....about like a 44 special in power loaded with black powder, but it has a slight bottleneck and was originally designed as a rifle cartridge for the Winchester 1873 rifle. So technically not legal. Bummer......Most game wardens probably wouldn't know that, and I could probably get away with using it, but why risk it? What the rule is for is to not allow things like the Thompson Center Contender with a 308....basically a short rifle compared to a revolver like mine.

Thanks! The Circuit Judge actually has a .45 barrel. It's bore diameter is made to accommodate the .451 and .452 bullets of the .45 colt and is way too large to get good accuracy with .410 bore slugs. It's basically a .45 with a long enough chamber that you can shoot .410 through it.

Great video. Nasty slug there, leaving slime all over your shotgun. *:)* As far as rifled .410 barrels, isn't that Rossi Circuit Judge rifled? Not really a shotgun, more of a .45lc rifle. Really nice shooting you did there. Anyway, take it easy and thanks for the vids. *:-)*

Hello and thanks! Yeah that ol slug lubed my shotgun up for me :) LOL The Rossi Circuit Judge barrel is of the proper bore diameter for the .45 colt which has bullets measuring .451 or .452 most commonly. It is for too large a diameter for the .410 slug to engage the rifling. Kinda be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway if you catch my drift.

You can shoot rifled slugs through a full choke though. That's why they are "rifled". The ribs keep the slug centered when going through a cylinder bore and squish down when going through a choke.

Taurus Judge Carbine is a .45 Colt barrel. Much too large of a bore diameter for any kind of accuracy with .410 slugs.

This gun takes Beretta/Mobil style choke tubes. It comes with a full, a modified and an improved cylinder. Brenneke recommends shooting these slugs through cylinder or improved cylinder. Since I don't have a cylinder I used the improved cylinder. I mention that I am shooting IC at 2:58 in the video.

The slugs are key holing. Try a cylinder choke. Full is too tight for slugs causing them to jump as the exit.

What part of the video made you think I was shooting "full" choke? Just curious as to where the miscommunication took place so I can avoid it in future videos. Thanks.
@charliebelle6693
@charliebelle6693 5 жыл бұрын
Because of the comment below that you pinned that said full choke. Brenneke slugs are closer to the bore size than Foster type that are manufactured undersize. In any event, the slugs were key holing at 25 yards which means they were unstable in flight. I use to shoot the same slugs out of a Smith & Wesson model 1000 20 ga with a cylinder slug barrel & sights with good results to 70 yards.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@charliebelle6693 I agree with you they were not stable, I just couldn't understand for the life of me figure out why you thought I was using a full choke. These slugs are indeed safe for full chokes per Brenneke's FAQ page. The ribs swage down much like a Foster. The reason I pinned the full choke comment was that I did not know this at the time of the video and made it clear I was using the IC choke which Brenneke recommends for best accuracy. Anyway, these are my favorite slugs to use out of the .410. I have found that the more common Foster slugs (at least in my area) typically break up on impact whereas the Brennekes give good penetration.
@charliebelle6693
@charliebelle6693 5 жыл бұрын
I shot slugs extensively and my county is still shotgun only. My property is in a rifle zone now. I never had a problem with Foster slugs and penetration but the .410 is not legal for deer hunting in my state, so my results are all with 12, 16 and 20 gauge slugs. I found that overall my best results were with the Winchester brand foster slugs. Why, I can't tell you. Overall I got far less 'fliers' than with Remington or Federal. Like I mentioned earlier, I shot the Brenneke slugs out a S&W 1000 20 but in reality they didn't print any better than the Winchesters but I was getting neat holes. Check the bore for a defect. Does the gun have chokes or is it straight IC? If it's choked maybe something is catching that plastic wad as it exits. Did you try any other brand to see if they key hole also? Good luck. PS. Most .410's are straight choked full like my Remington & Mossberg pumps, my Lefever Nito special SS and my TC contender bbl.
