Love this video. I have an 870 Wingmaster, 28" Smooth Bore Modified choke, 1976, Hardwood. A heavy gun that reduces recoil a lot when shooting magnum slugs- very accurate, but WOAH, protect your ears! Those shells are ear busters! Wear ear protection to be safe.

Well, I am quite surprised it made that much of a difference. We filmed some stuff today using cylinder, full rifling and rifled choke and did not see improvements adding spin with the type of slug we were using. But it will give me an opportunity to send people over to THIS video.

Buff, first off, that was probably one of the best slug groups I ever saw. That rifled choke tube made the difference. Worth the $50, for sure. Second, whenever I sight in any scope, I may zero in with bullseyes, but I always set my elevation a little higher, so I will have good shots out at longer range. You can always lower your aim point if you're shooting at closer range, like you did at 50 yards. Like always, enjoyed your videos.

Love this video, dang near sabot performance with conventional slugs. For those who don’t know, it is actually preferred to shoot groups offset from the bullseye. This allows you to have a consistent point of aim to rest your sights or crosshairs on without destroying the bullseye half way through the grouping.

It's a shame Nikon stopped making rifle scopes. One of my favorites to this day is a Nikon with a turret calibrated for standard velocity 22lr. Rather than having drop points in the reticle, you just turn the exposed turret to your shooting distance as it's marked after getting it sighted in. Good quality glass too!

Just the engineer in me, I wonder about those rifled chokes and how much stress they're under when that slug slams into the rifling. In a fully rifled bore, a bullet starts rotation early in acceleration. In other words, not going that quickly when they start to rotate. In this shotgun, more than likely the slug is already doing 1400-1500 FPS when it hits that rifling. That's gotta put a significant amount of rotational strain on that choke. My guess is the reaction causes the choke to tighten rather than loosen. .. I see your little dog bought himself a Harley Davidson.
@brettanderson6743
@brettanderson6743 4 жыл бұрын
Correct about the rotation. The rifling is always opposite to the threading on the choke causing it to self tighten so to speak. much the same as bolts on the front of engine crankshafts.

I've seen guns torque in the hands of people in slow motion video, as a counter-action to heavy bullets resisting rotation in the rifling. Have to remember that rifling causes bullets to spin some ridiculously high RPM, way faster than many realize.
@TheFuriouscinnabun
@TheFuriouscinnabun 4 жыл бұрын
The slug is rotating do to its shape so that means the rifling just needs to speed it up to some degree.

1:35 twist x 4" Let's assume the slug travels 24" before it touches the choke rifling. I bet that slug hasn't rotated more than 2 revolutions in that distance. The only means it has to rotate is the breeze blowing across those little fins, imparting rotation like rocket fins. Buffalo said the choke has a 1:35 twist rate. Let's assume 1,400 fps slug speed by the time it reaches the rifling. Let's also assume the rifling in the choke is 4 inches long. On to the math: 1400 feet in 1 second, converted is 16,800 inches in a second. At this rate, the slug hits the rifling instantly imparting rotation across 4 inches of choke, or .00024 seconds to transverse the choke. After leaving the choke (assuming no slow-down), the slug is spinning at 28,800 RPM. Yes, you read that right. Whatever minor rotation it has before hitting the choke is essentially inconsequential compared to how quickly it has to begin rotating. For sake of my math, 0 RPM to 28,800 RPM in 0.00024 seconds. 480 revolutions per second.

Like your new shooting bench; that might be one reason you haven’t done that trick before. Sighting in slug guns is no fun day at the range. I gave up on those big long shot shells for hunting waterfowl. It got to the point I only use 2¾ and 3-inch shells for hunting waterfowl. Them big old shells do kill ducks and geese better but, if you like eating them they don’t leave much left to eat a lot of times. I was hunting with an old duck hunter in a public shooting blind one time. I had a Mag 10. He looked at me when he saw that thing and said we ain’t hunting flying elephants just ducks. He was right and I was young and dumb. He said; the secret to killing ducks; is you just wait till their close young man. He was right again; and you don’t have to walk far to find them neither. The fun thing about using a Mag 10 was the echo the bad thing was; every duck for miles knows where not to go. I have two AL 390 shotguns one 12 and one 20. If I hunt little woodland beaver ponds I take the 20 and it does a fine job. Something to think about. You should leave that scope on the next time you go duck hunting for your hunting buddies to ponder why they never thought doing that before you did.

@@buffalosoutdoors I enjoy your channel and things you cover in your videos. I like seeing someone spending time shooting shotguns and testing shot shells and slugs. Most people don’t realize how much difference there is to using the right shot shell and choke. Most shotgun shooters buy a 12 bore and never understand the reason to use anything else. The difference in shot shells and shotguns are much harder to get right than getting a rifle to shoot well. Your video brought the memory of hunting ducks with that old grizzly faced duck hunter back. Some experiences you learn hunting; should never be forgotten. When you shoot five slugs in one hole; you got something right. I had to laugh; when someone made the comment on not hitting the bullseye.

Wow! That's amazing!!! My mouth was hanging open, literally, from amazement when you shot that tight group! You've got a tack driver .73 cal rifle there! Good video presentation too. Thanks a lot. You've really done a service to shooters with this video. Thanks again!

That's great shooting. I'm glad you shot that second group. I was contemplating a rifled barrel for my moss500, but I will for sure add this to the choke case!!

A wonderful test using good, standard methods, no messing about. Taofledermaus sent me here and I'm glad he did. On a less important side note, as a Brit I enjoy the varying accents of my nation. They change almost from one square mile to the next which is something I find interesting. Your accent is nothing short of wonderful. What a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for the video.

for a 50 yard gun, all the groups were acceptable. two decent and one outstanding. The great thing about that last one is I think you might have a legit 100 yard gun there. Curious to know the drop off at 100 yards.

Jesus,, Buff THAT is some serious shooting!!!! And to tell you the truth, I'm an old guy, and I can't ever remember any shotgun guy that I ever hunted with, who DIDN'T flinch after 4 or 5 shots from a heavy 12 gauge load. You should've seen the guys recently trying 3" 1 Oz slugs from Remington at 1875 fps...out of under 7 lb Riot Slug Guns!!!! Man, those rounds will knock you into tomorrow LOL.

I’m new to your channel, but have to say I find your tests very informative And enjoyable to watch. Im 59 and have allways owned one shotgun or another since childhood on the farm. But for the first time, I finally purchased a Benelli shotgun with changeable choke tubes! And you have been part of the education bringing me up to speed on what possible chokes to buy, and the differences between them… yep, have a Carlson’s rifled choke tube on the way… I was impressed with what that did for a foster slug. and since I use 00 buck, your other tests have certainly applied to anything I do. Just wanted to drop a thankyou.

This was excellent shooting once again. You are a fine shot, sir. That third shot in particular through the rifled choke made no impression on the paper that I could see. It was literally through the same hole. I suppose using quality slug ammunition also helps. Shows how versatile the shotgun can be from skeet to slug! Thank you for showing this.

I second that last Wow! Great video, Buffalo. I appreciate how you tell it like it is, without excuses (windy day, aging eyes, I've read them all by the professional gun writers). You do straight up honest reporting. And you shoot 5 shot groups, even with these heavy hitters. I shoot 20 gauge single shots and the slugs punish me plenty. Thanks again.

My OCD was screaming for you to zero the scope first but I understood that the goal here was to focus on the grouping and that grouping was BEAUTIFUL! I've got an SDS bullpup so I am definitely sold on scoring myself a good rifled choke for it.

Now that is mighty good to know Buffalo! Okay now to check the new Maverick to see which barrel might have a screw-in choke. Then to buy a rifled choke for that barrel. It came with an improved cylinder barrel and a longer vent rib field barrel.
