Brett Lee played in an era where Australia dominated both Test and One Day Cricket. Unfortunately, Brett let some beamers go in his time - full toss at the batsman. He was just so fast that if he let his control slip the ball could do anything. This reel shows him as an All-rounder: leathal bowler, big hitting tail-ender, and crazy-good feilder. The Steve Waugh dismissal is from a game between Australia A and Australia B - there was a time when Oz had so many good players, we could field 2 international teams. England was the happless international team who played in the Tri-Series against the 2 Australia's teams. Needless to say, the final was between Oz A and B and Brett at the time was on the B team (the beginning of his international career).

160 kilometers per hour (99.4 miles per hour) = 44.44 meters per second. A cricket pitch is 17.68 meters (from crease to crease). This means the batsman has only 0.39 seconds to analyse the delivery and react to it.

When Warney and Lee were together, imagine as a batsman what you'd be thinking? One with impossible, physics defying spin, the other, bowling cannon balls at your head. Fast leg theory at its very thugish best. You'd either be walking off for an early tea or otherwise being stretchered off to hospital. Brilliant gruesome twosome. Geniuses both. I'm English by the way, this is how I view them. RIP Shane, the GOAT!

It's only really "leg theory" with the leg theory field of close catchers in an arc behind square on the leg side. That field is not permitted under the laws since the 1930s

@@joyfulzero853 Fast leg theory, yes. But if you concentrate the bowling on the leg stump and concentrate your field on the leg side, then it's still playable. Bit boring though. But with Warne and Lee, they skills they had, it worked better. Play it with lesser players against a batsman who is difficult to get out, then you could be there all day. Or five days! Geoff Boycott, yawn!

Can’t forget McGrath. McGrath, Lee and Warne, with a few other handy bowlers (Gillespie and Watson to name but 2)… that Aussie attack was pure greed having that much talent in the same generation… and the batsmen and keepers at the same time? Dominant team all around, and that was on an average day. The 2005 Ashes series, probably the greatest series ever (more so for us Brits), and it was stupid luck for us that McGrath trod on a ball in the warmup and missed the second test, we won it and the momentum shifted. So yeah, you can’t leave McGrath off that list, he was a huge miss for the Aussies. Can’t believe that was nearly 20 years ago! They got some handy replacements in the current team though, Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyons is probably the closest to that 2000s attack.

Fast bowlers do not deliberately try to injure. They provide a type of delivery to intimate the batter to test his every batting ability - "test cricket" is a longer form of the game to test both skill and endurance. I think a helpful analogy is to consider cricket as a battle and as the batters a defender of their "castle" and use their skills to stop the "enemy" breaching their defences and "return fire" by nullifying the "cannon balls" and at the same time gaining a potentially winning advantage by accumulating points (runs). My late father always made the point that it may be the only game where an individual is fighting against 11?. Similar to baseball at least in this respect. I'm nearly 71yrs and have loved and played this great game since I could walk. I love the way you are so enthusiastic about increasing your knowledge of the sport and enjoy your presentations very much. Thank you😊, Tony, 🦘🦘🦘 Brisbane Queensland Australia

as a pom (aussie slang for englishmen), lee was a player you loved to hate, yet begrudgingly want on your team. part of fast bowling is to intimidate. bowling around the ribs and head. one of the worst things to do as you're ducking is to look away. thats why these batsmen got hit. easier said than done tho.

when brett was a young kid, he was more known for his batting and later bowling, cos he was playing against adults, then he became more known for his bowling as he grew up. Him and shoab aktar were in competition for being the fastest in the world which brett reached the 1601kph or 100mph mark but tho aktar is in the books as being faster, brett has bowled much faster but i think political bs has it otherwose....in fact, former aussie bowler jeff thompson is still hailed to this day as the fastest ever n was deadly. But of the modern bowlers, shaun tait of australia, known as the wild thing, is actually the fastest, in fact so fast that the speed camera broke/malfunctioned tryin to record his speed

Brett Lee is one of the nice guys of cricket, he hated hurting people. However, he was a fast bowler and fast bowlers hurt people as part of their repertoire. If a pace bowler bowls fast and short he is hoping the batsmen is going to duck and leave his bat up, or just get out of the way while processing internal terror. If the batsmen is hit you are hoping it is on his body somewhere where there is padding. But the batsmen takes full responsibility for their own injuries. If you don't want to get hurt don't go out in the middle. You can see Binger's compassion by almost always being the first one to an injured batsmen.

The ball bowled towards the batsman's head is known as the bouncer, this type of bowling is not very much intentional but for the bowlers it is like a weapon to show his aggressive mode to bowl for defending the batsman scoring runs.

Brett Lee -pace like fire,highly competitive, a sportsman and a gentleman. You notice that with all the people he hit,and there were quite a few,he is the first to go check they are ok. 2005 Ashes series ,Lee hits Andrew Strauss flush on the side of his helmet and is first to check on him. The game is held up for a while as they staunch the blood flowing down the side of Strauss's face. He elects to continue to bat on regardless. The next delivery Strauss is already ducking before Lee releases the ball, which duly passes through where his head would have been. It's called Test cricket for a reason.

Brett Lee’s speciality was bowling “bouncers” at tail enders ( tail Enders being the bowlers from the opposing side who bat at the tail end of the innings as they are not recognised batsmen, in other words, they are “bunnies” with the bat). So he would bowl flat out bouncers at them until he hit them in the head ! He was an animal ! After hitting and injuring a tail Ender he would run over and fake being concerned, after spending ages TRYING to hit them in the head !

Some of the batsmen had bad techniques, ducking into what they thought were high balls. Others were simply bouncers at head height which is part of a fast bowlers armoury. The beam ball was the dodgy one, I saw that while in New Zealand and a few Kiwi's were understandably up in arms.

During the Pakistani Ramadan period, no cricket was allowed to be played so Shoab Akhtar, the fastest bowler at the time, decided to keep his fitness up by playing grade cricket in Sydney. He joined up with his best Aussie mate Brett Lee and decided to play for Brett’s team, Mosman, for 1 month. Brett and Shoab opened the bowling for Mosman. Can you imagine being a batsman in 1st grade facing up to those two? First graders are just trying to make it to the state team, then state team players try and make it into the national side.

The short ball (bouncers) are intentional, and are allowed with some restrictions to batsmen. There is less tolerance for bowling them to the non-batsmen. Full tosses are almost always accidental, and bowlers would generally apologise if they hit a batsman with one of them, or even come close.

@brucelamberton8819
@brucelamberton8819 9 ай бұрын
The fuss toss at 2:44 was purely accidental - you can see the ball slip out of Lee's hand a moment before he would have otherwise released it. As for striking batsmen with bouncers this was nor only because he was so fast but often because the batsmen would take their eye off the ball and turn away, the most dangerous thing to do as it exposes the back of the neck / base of the skull, the worst place to be hit (which is how Phillip Hughes died).

Bowlers are allowed 2 bouncers above the batsman's shoulder height each over (set of 6 balls). The bowler is intentionally bowling at the batsman's head and body here and is intended to intimidate but also test their technique against balls aimed at their heads- are they good enough to get out of the way or to play cross batted pull or hook shots to those deliveries. It also makes the batsman think twice about plonking onto their front foot. They need to be able to play these balls off the back foot and be able to sway their weight back. If the batsman gets hit, they can get injured.Most bowlers say they never intend to hurt the batsman, but one bowler Jeff Thomson once said he wanted to see blood on the pitch.... Bouncers as explained above are balls that bounce and are aimed at the head/body of the batsmen. Bouncers used to only be allowed in test cricket and would be called a no ball in odi cricket- that's changed now and they are allowed in all cricket. That's why they were talking about the height of the bouncer when the batsman's helmet fell onto the stumps in that clip- at that time the bouncer wasn't allowed in odi cricket and it should have been given a no ball but the umpires let it slide. When the ball is aimed at the head without bouncing it's called a Beamer- these are highly dangerous and therefore illegal. They can happen by accident occasionally, but if a bowler bowls 2 the umpire will ban them from bowling the rest of the innings. If it is possibly intentional, the player can be reprimanded or even banned for a few matches. Thats why when Brett Lee bowled a Beamer at Brendan McCullum here, the batsman was very angry.

2:57 A Bouncer above waist level (aka Beamer) is illegal in Cricket as it is considered too dangerous, hence it is always given No Ball with the Bowler given 1st warning by the Umpire. If the same Bowler bowls a Beamer for the 2nd time in the match (intentionally or not) then he's not allowed to Bowl for the rest of the match. Similarly, a Bouncer (aka Bumper) above shoulder level is considered too dangerous & is allowed only once in an Over. 3:34 That Batsman Alex Tudor is actually England Fast Bowler who apparently was Bowling Bouncers to the Australian Batsmen during their Innings, so they decided to give him a pay back with Bouncers when he came to Bat. Sad part of this though is that his career ended after receiving that blow. 6:15 What happened there is the Ball knocked the helmet off causing if to fall on to the Stumps dislodging the Bails which got the Batsman Out by what is known in Cricket as a Hit Wicket (it basically like a self goal, here the Batsman gets himself Out by hitting the Stumps). What the 3rd Umpire (or TV Umpire) is checking there is whether the Bouncer hit his head directly above shoulder level or it hit the shoulder & then deflected towards his head, the former makes it a No Ball & the Batsman would've been safe as you can't get Out (except Run Out) on a No Ball. 10:52 Yes, they're intentional. I won't say bullying but Fast Bowlers definitely try to scare the Batsman so they're not confident in scoring Runs against them. Although injuring someone is never their intention, they just want to scare them to throw them off a bit. If you enjoyed watching Brett Lee Bowl you'll definitely enjoy watching him Bowl to Piers Morgan. Apparently he trash talked about Lee & then Lee challenged him to face him during the 2013-14 Ashes series in Australia, oddly enough he accepted to face One Over in the Nets. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aaqKhKyb1ZramqM.html

Cricket is a much more technical and harder sport than Baseball. Unlike Baseball's blind whack-and-giggle, Cricket involves a lot of technicalities in batting as well as bowling. Environmental conditions and the pitch play a huge part in Cricket. A batter has to face a vast variety of deliveries, such as Express Fast Bowling, Swing Bowling (fast bowling where ball deviates within the air), Seam Bowling (fast bowling where ball deviates after hitting the ground), Spin Bowling (slow bowling where ball turns after hitting the ground), etc. Within fast bowling, there are a number of types of swings and seam bowling, like In-swing, Out-swing, Reverse-swing, Off cutter, Leg cutter, Bouncer, Yorker, Slower, etc. Within spin bowling, there are a number of types of spins, like Off-spin, Leg-spin, Googly, Doosra, Left-arm, Right-arm, etc. If it is cold and damp, the resulting heavy air favours fast, swing bowling. Grass on the pitch also assists fast, seam bowling. Also, a shiny, new ball favours fast bowling. Contrastingly, if it is hot and dry, the pitch cracks which favours spin bowling. And a worn out ball favours spin bowling. To be successful, a batter has to learn to face all kinds of bowlers and all adapt in all these conditions, since each batter gets only one chance to bat per inning. Likewise, a bowler has to learn to bowl in all conditions. A player is said to possess a cricketing brain if he or she correctly assesses the environmental and pitch conditions going into the game. Selecting your playing XI players for the game and your shots while batting and deliveries while bowling heavily depends on the conditions. Batting in cricket does not mean just whacking the ball around. A quality batter is rather known to play along the ground and in the gaps between the fielders. Placement and timing are valued more over hitting in Cricket. It is all these technicalities that make Cricket difficult to understand for a novice and result in a whole lot of Cricket jargon.

Yes, bowlers like to intimidate batsmen with bowling at their bodies rather than the stumps. The umpires will step in and stop it if the batsman is not a recognized (meaning capable) batter. A few batters have died after being hit by cricket balls. Cricket balls like baseballs are very hard.

The greatest fast bowler of the modern era. Bowling at a speed of 90 miles per hour every day is not easy. He did just that

When does the "modern era" start? Additionally was he better than Dale Steyn?

The batsmen at 2:46 is very annoyed because Lee bowled him a 'beamer' (a high full toss) the umpire held one arm out straight to signal 'no ball' because it is illegal and at that pace very dangerous, it is hard for the batsman to spot and adjust to when he is looking for a ball that he expects to bounce. A fast bowler will normally put his hand up and apologise if he bowls a beamer. One other point to bear in mind is that when watching in real life these balls look really fast; television and the viewer's brain slows them down especially when you see them several times. The first two batsmen hit on the head ducked into balls that didn't bounce as much as they expected.

I don't think so. He set a record in 2005 but Shahid Afridi and Zard Ali (Afghanistan) have passed it.
