Hey Brett, another great lesson! Just found your channel and the way you explain using the chord tones with the pentatonics is awesome. I've been playing for more years than I'd care to admit and you're the first teacher to actually explain this in a way I understand. Thank you so much! ps what are the gorgeous chords you're playing during the first 12 seconds of this video? Thanks again.

Disregard my question. When they played the original song at the very end of the video they went to that A to B change which could be played in A Lydian, B Mixolydian and c# Aeolian or c# minor pentatonic and they would all sound cool depending on whether you elected to keep C#m as the tonal center or do modal interchange to emphasize a different tonal center making the song more happy and sweet sounding. At least that’s how I think about it. On the other hand you could stay in C-sharp Aeolian But still land on root chord tones occasionally occasionally giving the song a decidedly Lydian or mixolydian vibe and then go back to resolving on C-sharp minor during that part to prepare the listener for the original verse, smoky blues roadhouse tune. Whether that’s considered musically correct I have no idea but I do know that if we consider the C-sharp minor chord as the sixth chord of the A Major key signature and the A major scale as that containing all the right notes, with C# Minor as the tonal center, then I think my analysis is one way of approaching the song. The reason I’m writing this down, it’s because I am 49 years old and I’ve been playing for 35 years. I’ve known how to use modes and Pentatonics for at least 32 of those years but Had no idea about western music, the cased system And the difference between Key signature and tonal center. I assumed the tonal center Was the key of the song because I learned playing blues where the one chord Is always the key and the tonal center. For that reason for that reason I always searched for the tonal center of non-blues Chord progressions And assumed that the total center which would typically be in a particular modal shape, was the key of the song. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I bought textbook on music Theory, Which was a short handbook for probably 40-50 pages Along with watching Rick Beato’s channel and reading articles about theory and guitar magazines that I have. General music Theory Using the circle of fifths, the caged system, Learning triads, adding 7ths and augmented and diminished, arpeggios, shell voicings and building chords based on the major scale or the natural minor is something anybody can learn in a few weeks of study. The difficult part of theory for me is when you begin to harmonize non-modal scales such as harmonic and melodic minor, plus you learn the bebop scale and then you learn how to play solos using arpeggios, chord tones and scales as well as switching them quickly over basic Jazz progression like 251 and 1624. Reading is something that I can decipher but sight reading is something that will require lessons and a good teacher. This is the problem with self taught players. You learn to shred and play licks and chords by ear and watching people (which is good, but as far as knowing why this fit or work well together was something I intuitively knew but Would’ve been fast track head I bothered to take lessons and focus from the beginning. I took 405 lessons and learned nothing but basic songs. Whenever the instructor want to teach me the things that I need to know, I was just saying yeah yeah yeah just teach me the song, I understand teaching guitar Is competitive and you kind of have to sacrifice what you know a student needs sometimes to keep the student coming back. The problem with teaching songs is the student will learn to teach himself songs very quickly, but the real value of having a good teacher is fast tracking your road to playing lead well and playing resin well well understanding how the fretboard fits together. I always wished that the teachers I had with tell me that we are going to learn a song is lesson because I know that’s a good way to get you inspired but you also must learn but I’m teaching you because you will get so much better very quickly and be able to play those songs you don’t think you will ever be able to play at this point. Because of not getting any better learning songs after four or five lessons, I quit playing through high school and picked it up again in college. Within a year of reading magazines I was playing with pentatonic scales and with modes Although not playing over the changes. Therefore I could sound fairly decent if I was playing other songs that remained in the same key and didn’t have cords containing wrong notes based on the scale I was playing. Soon I realized some of my lead notes didn’t sound right so I started learning about playing the right notes but I still was intimidated by Theory so I just figured it out By comparing the scales to the underlying chords and simply modifying some of the notes as a progression change occurred. This worked very well and I became a competent guitar player capable of playing all of my favorite blues and rock ‘n’ roll songs and even the stuff that I thought I would never play. When I learned theory I didn’t necessarily get better in terms of chops but I got much better in terms of playing with other people. I learned to stop over playing, I learned that some songs are reliant on Licks and other songs Rely on knowledge of the chords, As well as knowledge of the arpeggios, triads and scales that work. With rhythm I learned about using shell voicings with jazz, 7th triads or even 4 note chords with blues and rock, when trying to play sparsely and not get in the way of a keyboard player, piano player or bass player. Previously I played much bigger chords that tend to drown out some of the other people. Now I focus on knowing my place within the soundstage. That’s why I encourage people to really know basic theory Before watching a lot of these great instructional videos. A lot of these guys are teaching is so much easier to grasp when you know theory Not too much in it you have train your ears directly or in invert and leaf from teaching yourself off records instead of relying on KZfaq. Today these instructional‘s are so valuable and you can get so much out of them but a prerequisite, is a good ear and a thorough knowledge of music Theory As well as getting all five positions of the Pentatonic major and minor, The modes in terms of shapes, triads, dominant major and minor seventh chords as well as suspended chords diminished chords on augmented and half diminished chords. Once you know this it’s easy to learn about cord substitution, using non-scaler notes for chromatic leads, memorizing all the notes on the fret board And learning how to build any kind of cord weather they are basic major or minor chords, as well as major minor or dominant seventh chords, sixth chords, 9th, 11th and 13th Chords, sus 2 and 4 chords, Diminished, 1/2 diminished and double diminished and augmented chords. These are the basic fundamentals that every guitar clarity to have. After this there’s still a whole universe of stuff to learn but this will be plenty for any rock, blues, country folk tune snd Enough for plenty of Jazz Tunes. Practice with purpose and learn things thoroughly before moving on to something else, use a metronome at least a third of the time that you practice. Some people will use it more and some will use it last and some flame you don’t need to use one at all but I think that’s bullshit. If you’re not playing over jam tracks or drum beats you need to learn to play over the click.

The context of the D to the a is a change in the song in C-sharp minor then c# Natural minor or Aeolian or C# Pentatonic works but if it B M to A M alone it is B Mixolydian. A to B is Lydian. I guess I’m unclear on whether that is what the change is or if that is its own thing. Then that’s the same vamp as Fire on the Mountain by the dead m. The 5 chord to 4 chord. Or 4 to 5 Lydian. I would never correct either of these guys because They are awesome players, but I guess I was just a little bit confused about whether the B and A was a change to the “smoky Road House” rhythm. When Quistgard went from the C sharp major it to the D sharp major And began playing C# Lydian licks then I realized That he was referring to that vamp being the four to the five chord As a standalone, versus the verse to chorus change within the context of the original song. Is that what you got out of it.

Question for you Brett. IF you could NOT use the pentatonic scales..which ONE would you use instead?
@BrettPapa
@BrettPapa 5 жыл бұрын
If it was a major key my favorites are the major scale or mixalydian and if it was minor my favorite is dorian but using those depends on the progression. Other than that I would just play around the chords themselves.

Thanks for replying..As the pentatonic is just about everyones' go to it's always interesting when you ask this. And nearly everyone comes up with more than one....Which kinda tells us why the pentatonic is most players go to scale. As the saying goes..Less is more.
