Hey guys, I appreciate all the positive comments and encouraging feedback! I will at some point be upgrading my audio situation. These are just quick iPhone videos to get some content out there. Any tech advice is welcome. My video camera has two XLR inputs, but I think I need a mic with a preamp. I tried using an SM-57 on my amp once for another project, but wasn’t able to get a decent volume level at all. Also, I just wanted to say that these videos are geared to drive attention to my full Artist Works curriculum and my private local and Skype lessons. The AWs school is extremely professional and is shot with 5 camera angles and studio quality audio. It’s amazing how high their bar is set for what we are doing there. They really are a great company that cares about their students and music education!! The benefit of my private lessons is that I can spend an hour (or more) honing in on your individual needs specifically. Everyone is coming from a slightly different place wether it’s musically or the way they see it and learn. I can taylor my approach to fit any and all of these unique situations. I have been teaching people all over the world and love doing it! I am a professional guitar player first and foremost and a teacher second. I know that these concepts work because they worked for me! I don’t know much theory, I can’t read music or tab, I don’t even have all of the notes on the finger board memorized. But I do know that the way that I’m seeing this is a very concrete and useful way to learn to become a well rounded guitar player!! It’s what the pros use and rely on every day! I am bypassing all the modes and complicated theory and getting right to what really works and is simple and clear to see and be able to apply to your playing to make music and really know the fingerboard. Just because a scale may technically work over a chord theory wise, does not mean it’s going to sound right in every situation. It’s all about seeing these shapes well enough to then forget about them and move on to the next level. Musicality is the end result and should be your ultimate goal here. This is how you get there. OK, I watched this video 5 times and still didn't get it. So, I got out pencil and paper, my abacus, a protractor and my t square. Then I took off my shoes so I could count past ten and about 20 minutes later, the light bulb popped ! I thought I knew the caged system pretty well. I can arppegiate my way through the positions without thinking about it, but this lesson is teaching me the function of the different notes. Now it's time to get these ideas under my fingers. I watched this a year or so ago and sort of got it. Now watching again I see it clearly and I have to say this is by far the best explanation of finding the chord tones and moving between them in a blues progression. Pure brilliance. I have a lot of practice to do....

Excellent lesson, thank you. My fancy classical music book explained how the flat 7 resolves down to the 3rd, but it's refreshing to hear you apply it musically. My book also said how the 3rd of the dominant leads up to the root of the tonic or 1 chord. Maybe you could show your approach using the 3rd resolving up, just how you did with the flat 7 resolving down. It was easier for me to remember by using the scale degrees, for ex. The 4th in the major scale resolves down to the 3rd (f to e, G7 to C). And the 7th, leading tone resolves up to the octave ex, b to c. Or the 3rd of G7 moving to C, tonic. ☺ They're both a half step apart, and sound smooth... Thank you again. Going to practice what you just showed us. Paz, gracias!

I’ve really been putting time into learning the caged system/triads after being stuck in the pentatonic for years. I can’t tell you how amazing these lessons have been. Thanks Guthrie, I've been working on moving the 1 4 5 triads around for a while now from your previous videos, and the flat 7th being right above the next third, but about 12 minutes into this one you showed how the A, with the 3rd played on the d string, which i guess is the 10th? it resolves back to the 4 chord like that due to being down on the d string. awesome. Little ah ha moments like that are why I love your videos. I'm to the point that I'm now working on applying all this to backing tracks so that little gem of knowledge will be put to use.Thanks again.

The main reason that I decided to learn CAGED was because I felt I wasn't good enough at targeting chord tones when improvising. I now realize that it's that & more. What I learned today is really going to expand on what can be accomplished with CAGED. For example, I'd never realized that the minor pentatonic fits perfectly from the b7. I can't wait to start implementing that into my playing! Glad to see that your ear's doing better!

Hey Guthrie just found you, I have been playing for a long while and really enjoy your lessons. Long ago I didnt know about the caged system but had been using it but just didnt have a name for it. I learned as a beginner 50yr ago to find the notes up the fretboard by the tuning of each string changing every five frets. I love your lessons they are for people who have a good foundation already so I appreciate that.
