Here skiers show the double pole kick (DPK) technique. The first skier, Mike, has mastered the maneuver. For some of the others it was their first time. The DPK is a useful middle gear between diagonal stride (DS) and double pole (DP). It can be used when conditions are too fast for DS but not fast enough for DP. It is especially useful in transitional terrain. The position of the leg to the rear is a follow through from a powerful push-off. It has the added benefit of acting as a counter-balance allowing the skier to adopt a more aggressive forward position prior to falling onto the poles. With Mike notice how he slides one foot slightly forward as the hands reach full extension behind him in preparation for a powerful push-off with the kicking leg. This is an advanced move and should not be attempted until the skier has mastered the basic movements. With the DPK it is acceptable to use the same foot for push off, or to alternate feet.
