Anytime Uncle Larry gets in front of the camera, you are going to get incredible guitar technique of all sorts, a distinct philosophy of music making, impeccable tone, references musicians you haven't heard of but need to look up immediately, and valuable life lessons! There’s a few guys like him, Martin Miller and RJ Ronquillo where musical styles are blurred. If I learn one lick it somehow can be applied to every genre. Then guys like Guthrie Trapp and Danish Pete who are great for if you started from country phrasing/technique. And of course Andy Wood is a master of the instrument. Tho, I find him a bit more difficult to learn from cause of his 80s/Van Halen roots. Shoutout to.

When it REALLY counts, Tom's playing is NOT about pattern based shred, he's all about REAL ideas, and phrasing, with a super strong narrative quality, and an extra helping of point and purpose. Yeah, I mean, with all of that musical TALENT he has, why did he WASTE so many years and HOURS practicing his technique to be able to shred? What a waste of TIME. He could have spent that time DEVELOPING a different aspect of his playing. NOBODY wants to listen to some guy who is technically PROFICIENT on their instrument. It’s a KNOWN FACT: anybody who plays fast, is hiding their musical DEFICIENCY. Nobody should waste their time on this MEANINGLESS and USELESS ability!

All realities, require that their polar opposites are equally real, otherwise we would have no appreciation of anything. One thing that separates Tom from other guitarists (as you hinted with the question about if he already knew Yellow Brick Road) is how good his ears are. And, how he can pull what he is hearing out of the instrument. He did a video playing a pop song from the 80s called "Waiting for a Star to Fall" and I was so floored that I had to put away the guitar for a couple of days. He captured the essence of the full arrangement in a few layers on the looper. I had to just spend some time thinking about all of the elements that would go into such a thing. And, figure out how to try and improve my own skills from my current position.

I love how Tom wants Brett to get it and slows it all down even unplugged just to give it to him. I too cut my finger on a chop saw and almost lost it. Thought it was over, but I healed and because i had to use other fingers I became a way better player than I ever would have. Forever a student and never giving up.

I love Tom. I've been a fan since around 2009. He mentions his finger injury here....he had (maybe it's still up) a video he posted from his garage shortly after he started playing again, and it blew my mind. Noone has transformed my playing more than Tom. This was a FANTASTIC lesson. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you, guys! There’s so much in this one. Most importantly for me, all the real struggles, when recording acoustics, and all the other real issues, just playing - basically, keeping s*** quiet. This is gold. I'm at that level where a lot of times when I decide to find something new to work on, I get frustrated that what I find online is stuff I've already been over, and thinking "I know there's more that's possible to do with this thing, but where is it?". When In started watching Tom, I found loads of things to try, and these videos with Brett and Tom are even better, because they're genuinely fun to watch, too. Many thanks to both of you guys.

Būk’s playing is, for me, the ideal blend of melody and fire. Great insight into his playing here. FWIW, the type patterns shown I’ve often heard referred to as “coils” - 3 notes ascending back to start as a 4 note pattern. Then begin at the second note and retreat pattern. I practice those in all manner of combination… good for breaking through barriers, for me. Thanks for sharing, Brett and Tom. Cheers!

Papa, Uncle Larry, this is right to the heart of the matter of being a musician on any instrument. Papa asking Larry super great questions, and the answers got my thinking going into a better direction. Why we are drawn into taking up learning an instrument. This lesson renewed my understanding why I love learning and playing musical instruments. You guys not only showed us and explained things. But helped me look deeper into reason of being a musician. The main thing people need to realise is you pick, fingerpick, fret, use certain fingers,different pressures all that mechanical stuff, the way you do it naturally to you, just keep doing it how you naturally do it, and that will be a big part of your unique sound. Tom is Tom, Papa is papa, you are who you are and that's great 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Hey Brett great lesson.. one thing that most lessons will never touch on with picking is the radius of the strings , if it’s not set up right it will mess you up . understanding the depth of the strings when changing from low to high or high to low .. most will struggle and not know why . I could be wrong but , it was an eye opener for me !

The music just absolutely flows out of this guy, this is someone that was literally born to play guitar you can literally hear and see his mind working. These videos have to be a regular thing. The last two I have watched more than 5 times over just sitting on the floor with my guitar and trying to absorb everything he is saying. I just don’t understand how someone can get to this level of fluidity. I play for 3-4 hours a day and have for a longgg time and watching people like Tom play is extremely inspiring and motivating but also extremely discouraging because I know I’ll never reach that level or anywhere close to this.

It’s not about reaching Tom’s level it about being inspired to play. It’s like being bummed you will never play basketball like Jordan. Take what you can and just have fun. The stuff in these videos has already made me a better player.

Brett, you the man, the feeling you must capture being in the company of such a Great Man, his character and musical prowess and experience of the world of music,I’m sure there is a word to describe Tom B. But Brett I know it adds to you as a person and your craft. What an absolutely fantastic lesson. Thanks Brett for asking all the questions I wanted to ask plus a few others I should have thought of ! Tom has such ridiculous technique but one of the very very few who uses it with taste and restraint. A musical giant.

Color me totally inspired! I've struggled my whole playing life with right hand mechanics. I'm going to watch this video over and over again until I can incorporate this style into my playing. These videos are so good. He really is a master at his craft. It woud be interesting to hear Tom elaborate more on developing time and groove, and also what it takes to actually sound in tune, considering how fickle guitars can be in that regard.

Tom is a genius. I could listen to him play forever. He isn’t just technically gifted, he is so incredibly musical. I’m not sure there has ever been anyone better to do it.

The nice thing about picking like Tom using "forearm rotation," is that you get "pick escape" on both the down and upstroke. That makes changing strings much easier and efficient. Great video. Thanks for sharing the insights of such an awesome Pro. 😎

Totally inspired! I just saw a video with him playing with Ann Wilson and he was playing at BC. Rich brought back some memories and he was totally on point in the show. A little intimidating my son has me picking the guit fiddle up again after 32 years. Love you Kats great sense of humor great attitude thanks so much !

Tom is utterly unique, the countless hours in the studio, being “raised by wolves” as he said, his entire environment, all come together to make him irreplaceable. But we can be inspired and aim to get maybe 10% of his magic and thats more then enough 🤘🤘

Christmas came early, Uncle Larry is finally starting to explain things. The way he plays chords is beyond belief. He usually just whips out one of the most interesting things in between sips of beer, no explanation, no information. Just pure genius, that he may take for granted.

Holy smokes Brett! This lesson hits super hard man. I have been working on some fast picking stuff after not having even tried to work on that sort of stuff for quite some time. Been watching a bunch of videos about picking and this is absolutely killer. Tom is a monster player! thanks Brett for hosting, and putting this all together you are right it is terrifying ! I would like to see a show or series dedicated to the pick, how he holds it when he uses the shoulder vs the point, how he transitioned from pick to using fingers and back, where he plays from bridge to neck .. its said the pick is the cheapest amplifier
