Thanks so much! *I might make an annotation or a note that - you have to twist it counterclockwise (or clockwise - i forget) fully to unlock it. From the video instructions, it made it sound like you had to twist it back and forth to get it off so i spent a good hour trying to jiggle it back and forth and pulling up on it... Of course there's a little indicator in my model that says 'align' and 'unlock' - which then i simply turned it towards 'unlock' and it came right off lol. Thanks again!
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I had to twist mine back and forth to free it up enough to be able to turn it in the unlock direction. I think what happens is that ground coffee gets into the locking mechanism over time and prevents it from turning freely.

@@The4Crawler Yes,I noticed that once the inner upper burr get stuck, it might inadvertently caused the gap wider. This could be the reason why my grind setting suddenly dropped from the usual 14 to 6. If my hypothesis is true, then it is advisable to clean the grinder more often to prevent ground stuck inside
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 2 жыл бұрын
@@Presso99 It may be that there is some buildup inside the grinder that is causing the problems you describe. In the Barista Express grinder that sort of thing can happen. Coffee grounds can get into the adjustment mechanism and limit how far it'll move. Your Owner's Manual should have some cleaning instructions.
@Presso99
@Presso99 2 жыл бұрын
@@The4Crawler I soaked it with baking soda for about 30 mins, it free up all the grounds that stuck inside, but after freed up the ground, the burr assembly seems a little loosen. I believe this could be the gap which i am encountering now
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 2 жыл бұрын
@@Presso99 If that grinder is like the Barista Express model that I have, there are a number of washers and shims inside that need to go in the right location. From what I understand, the later model grinders on the Barista Express have a micro-adjustment feature on one of the burrs that allow for adjustment in the spacing to account for wear over time, not sure if your grinder has either of those features.

Thanks for your very helpful video. You saved my coffee machine. I thought it was wrecked, ruined, kapputt. With your helpful advice I was able to repair it. It's a shame that Breville does not have this type of information or a link to your clip available on their website. The upper grind basket on my machine was really locked in place with grind residue so it took a fair amount of working it back & forth to get it to unlock in order to be able to remove it.

The outlet passage from the grinder can get clogged with built-in coffee residue, especially with oily coffee beans. Just keep track of all the parts removed and the order they were in while taking it apart. That's part of the reason I shot this video, so I could see how all the little washers and bits were installed originally as the instructions are not very clear on that.

I suppose a good dry, crunchy cereal would work as well as rice. My guess is the felt washer is only there to keep coffee powder out of the bushing below the center burr. I've not run into that issue before. I have a parts diagram below: photos.app.goo.gl/GJvopamrDbwLzxVg7 Maybe that'll help you see what's under that. Maybe that center stud has slipped out of place and something holds it from below. Otherwise, a new grinder assembly is available. The grinds are the same now 1-15 and actually it's not a massive big deal because still makes a really good latte or espresso. To get the desired pressure I've reverted to the dual wall filters. @The4Crawler
@The4Crawler Жыл бұрын
In my experience, a dual wall filter basket will often have a lower pressure reading unless your grind is dialed in just right. I usually use by dual wall basket with pre-ground coffee and it'll have a pressure reading just at the bottom end of the "espresso range" on the gauge. Still works fine. To get a higher pressure, you'll need to change to a finer grind and also try the single wall basket. Since the dual wall basket has the tiny orifice hole in the bottom, I find the grounds tend to get loosened up inside the basket since most of the pressure drop is coming from the orifice. When I use the dual wall basket, the "puck" of coffee will come out wet and fall apart easily. With the single wall basket, it'll come out as a dry, solid chunk that will stay intact when it hits the ground. It's a bit like if you were rinsing some lettuce and had a bowl with a tiny hole in the bottom and a colander. The bowl will start to fill up with water and the lettuce floats. In the colander, the water flows through quickly and the lettuce is pushed into the bottom of the colander.

I just encountered this problem this week. Like the most of us... there happened to be a piece of pebble inside the batch of the beans. I cleaned the burr all the way to the chamber and replaced the ripoff felt washer. It still does the same and won't grind. Bean problem? I don't think so b/c the bean that I used can be easily crushed and I also tried it with the grinder cleaner and no luck at all. anything you put in there will just get stuck and you can hear the motor spin freely and the lower part of the burr isn't moving at all... It really appears to me as a stripped gear. I am trying to see if there is a local service center to do this... if I can't get it fix... I may have to just buy a separate grinder...

@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 2 ай бұрын
I don't think there's a set schedule for this. I usually do it based upon how the grinder is working. As it gets plugged up the adjustment may need to keep being turned up or down more than normal or the volume of coffee out of the bottom seems to be less. In that case, it's likely the burrs getting loaded up with residue, in which case a simple cleaning (see other video on that in this playlist) is fine. But if the coffee coming out slows or stops, it's likely clogged below the burrs and then you need to open up the grinder and clean out the passage below.

Question - So I cleaned this and pulled everything out but that main screw that the washers go onto came out and now the grinder is not spinning to grind the beans. Any advice how to put that screw back in correctly. Seems like there is a washer really deep in the mechanism and there is one flat side to the screw but I cannot figure out how it aligns..

I've never been that far into the grinder to have run into that issue. Might be worth contacting Breville support and ask if they have an reassembly information for that. I believe that replacement grinders are, or at least were, available for a reasonable cost. Otherwise, just keep trying various orientations until you find one that works. If you have, or can get ahold of, one of those endoscopes for use on a smart phone, you might be able to look down the hole and see how it's set up inside. I picked up one of those endoscopes and have used it a few times where it's been helpful.

That function is controlled by the main circuit board in the machine. It reads the push button in the back of the basket holder as well as the amount dial and one/two cup. As long as you can stop the grinder by pushing the filter basket back into the switch, you could still use the grinder manually. If you want to fix the problem, some options below: 1. Unplug the machine for a while then plug it back in and see if that resets. 2. Unplug it, open up the back and then disconnect and reconnect all the wires from the grinder switch and dial on the main PCB and see if that changes anything. 3. Contact Breville support and see if they have any ideas. 4. Order a new main PCB and swap out the old one or send the machine into Breville for their flat rate repair service.

The newer grinder and burr have the adjustable settings, that would be one option is to purchase the new burrs for the grinder. I've heard they are a direct swap, but you might check with Breville support about that. The other option is to fully clean the grinder and make sure all the shims and washers are set up right. It may be something is holding the burrs apart and not letting them close enough for a finer grind. Compare the feel of the ground coffee to regular table salt, should be a similar feel between the finger tips. Also, make sure the filter basket is full and that the tamping is good. You might also try the dual wall basket and see if you get more pressure.

I suppose an easy check would be to trace out the wires that run to the grinder motor and check the resistance between them. If it's a very high/infinite resistance, that would say either the motor itself or the thermal cutout has gone open circuit. If there's a reasonable resistance, say around 30-50 ohms, then the motor is likely OK and then the issue may be the main control PCB. That is what sends power to the grinder motor.

Yes, it is a rather involved process they document, considering it's all done in comic strip format with little pictures. But that said, once you dive in it's not too bad. I think the people I've heard from that have reported grinders not working, have tried this procedure after the grinder had already stopped working. Unless the grinder stopped working because something got jammed inside, this technique won't make a non-working grinder start working again. I think most of the non-working grinders are due either to faulty switches or more likely a failed main controller circuit board.

Hi! Great video! Any tips on removing the top burr? It's really stuck!!!!

Yes, there are some good tips in the comments. What works for me is to try and turn the wire bail back and forth to gradually loosen up coffee grounds that get stuck in the tracks that the burr needs to twist in and out of. It may take a few minutes with no seeming progress but after a while you'll start to get a little wiggle room and then it'll free up.

I have a quite new Sage Barista Touch SES880. My problem is that I cannot unlock the top burr and remove it. It is completely stuck - it is not possible to release it. I've read the handbook and watched many KZfaqs. What to do?

I had trouble getting the top burr out as well. Turned, pulled and tried prying with no luck. By chance I put the nut back on and tightened it which rotated the bottom burr rotating it and freed it up. Seems the teeth may be too close in some alignments to pull it out. Once I rotated it the top burr came out easily with no effort.

@@iRayan3 Hi iRAYANN. By using enough rice in the bean hopper and grinding then I can unlock the top burr and remove it. I have done this several times successfully.

Does this make me lose the garantie ?

I suppose it might be best to contact the mfg. for the exact warrantee conditions. However, this procedure is documented in the Owner's Manual, albeit in cartoon format, and there's no mention of it voiding any warrantee in those instructions. I didn't observe any "tamper seals" in doing this.

and setting the inner grinder on 3 and the outside wheel grinder setting on 14 is bad ?

@@fedaanour1052 Might be worth opening the grinder up for a look, maybe something hard has fallen inside. Your machine is a bit different than mine (Barista Express) so follow the directions in your Owner's Manual. Just be sure to keep track of every nut and washer as you take it apart and put things back in the same order. My machine doesn't have the internal grinder adjustment so I'm not familiar with that aspect.

The machine isn't designed for commercial use. With home use, I've only had to perform grinder cleaning a few times in the last 6+ years.

Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. However, I meant the lid of the coffee machine doesn't close. Also, I do not have an acorn nut. Mine finishes flat, and leveled with the burr. studio.kzfaq.infoafU-nttr4YU/edit

OK, you may have a newer model machine that I do. Breville apparently made some changes to the grinder over the years. Never had any problems closing the lid on the machine, but see if you can find out where it's getting hung up. Try looking under the cover panel as you try to close it and also try to locate where it's being held up by pressing down gently around the top. You may be able to feel the location where the top rocks back and forth.

@@The4Crawler Thank you. I believe it’s the older model. BES860XL. One question, should my dial be at “Finest” when closing the lid? I saw a video that says it needs to be at 10 when opening it. That being said, I tried every number. I even tried putting aluminum paper inside to see what was blocking. Everything seemed normal. I’m stumped, as this is the only thing left stopping me from enjoying my espresso coffee in the morning. 😞

@@The4Crawler Hi again. I found the source of the issue. The base of the grinder wasn’t completely inside the opening where the coffee comes out. However, I have a new issue. There’s no water coming out. I can see the water circulating in all the various tubes, but nothing is coming out. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler Жыл бұрын
@@angelguerard1908 Glad you got the grinder issue sorted out. On the water flow, likely that the 3-port solenoid valve is the culprit. Maybe the wires are not plugged in properly, maybe the valve is clogged internally (if so, it won't seal off the top port and that lets water flow to the drip tray), or perhaps the Teflon tubes are hooked up incorrectly. Water should flow out of the center of the 2 solenoid valves when running a shot.

Have to stop watching espresso videos...just the mention of espresso and I pull out my moka...although I am very caffeine tolerant with regular instant coffee...espresso can wire me to an off the grid power high...moka pots are only a fraction of the real thing...even with 1/10th the punch...since I don't stop with one cup...don't get in my way

For sure. I've been working with my old Moka pot and French Press trying to perfect my technique with those devices. I still have a ways to go, but the coffee quality is much better than when I started.
