In this video I demonstrate on a Breville Barista Express an important adjustment to get more out of the internal built-in grinder.
Learn how to make adjustments to the internal burr set which is a quick and easy method to give you more adjustments to the grind dial. We often experience that the Breville Barista Express doesn't grind fine enough out of the box so we frequently carry out this adjustment to all Breville Barista Express machines that we calibrate.

Factory sets it to 6 (if you noted that before adjusting). Did the adjustment by only 1 make a notable difference? (Asking because my Breville finally stopped grinding finely and was brewing too fast, and finally found a couple of videos here on setting the burr...My fault for not knowing exactly what question to pose in the Search)

Do you know if this feature is available on the older version of the machine (the one with the rectangular bean hopper)?

Not sure but once you are low in coffee beans in your hopper I'd advise removing it and having a look. If there are similar markings/signs then the burrs should be adjustable.

@@MeebzcoffeeNz thanks mate. Just did that, the burr appears to be pretty set within the housing, and there is no adjustable ring there to rotate. So no luck for me, but I appreciate the reply!

When i got my grinder new I made a lot of adjustments to find the appropriate grind and tweak it for every new bean, but now a couple years in, I'm finding in order to get the grind fine enough I've had to turn it much finer to get the same consistency i was getting. Why is that? I'm glad for this tip though, as i have a way to correct for the time being.

It is normal for the grinding burrs to slowly wear over time and this is because they are not as sharp as when the burrs are new. To overcome this you usually have to grind a little finer over time. To help with this, you should also remove the burrs and clean it over time. This will prolong their use and also improve quality and consistency of the coffee. After time the burrs also need to be replaced especially if you are going through a reasonable volume of coffee.

Thank you! I am very good about maintenance, so I will look into finding replacement burrs!

You didn't say what number you set the burr grinder at!

I never do! The setting number 2 for example will be different within every single machine. Even two machines brand new out of the box will have some variation primarily due to beans but also due to other factors such as temperature, humidity and age. The best gauge is the extraction timing. I got another video named ‘Espresso Basics’ that shows this in detail.

What are your burr and grinder settings?

I adjust the internal burr set to the finest settings which is just a few clicks and then adjust the side dial grind setting to suit our coffee. This is usually around 5-7, however it's important to note this is different for every machine and every coffee. You need to adjust according to the extractions you are pulling. Check out my video on espresso basics for more info on this.
