I've seen some with systems like this do an "around/under the basket" recirculation along with traditional through the grain bed recirculation simultaneously with good results. Seems like that could work well with your setup here with a little modification, rather than one or the other.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the brewtools systems incorporate this. I got the idea from that system (I currently have one on loan from them) I could easily do it with this one just need to add a 3 way valve to the pump outlet. (Which I have in case I want to test it out) 👍🍻
@nmsauditor1a950
@nmsauditor1a950 4 жыл бұрын
I would think the simple answer would be to add length to the recirculating tubing, allowing it to lay on top of a small grain bed. I brew in a 30 gallon e herms system and sometimes do 5 gallon batches while using the longer tubing. As a side note, my efficiency is in the high 60's with 5 gallon batches and into the 80's with 15 or more gallons. My 3 vessels are Spike Kettles...love 'em! They make awesome equipment.

Thanks for the review. I currently brew small batch (1.25 gal) biab and I’m waiting impatiently for Spike’s system to become available. I want to move up to 5 gal batches so I think I’ll go with the 15 gal system vs the 20 gal you’re testing as I think it will be better optimized for that batch size. However, nice to know that the systems are flexible.

Great job demonstrating the small batch. Your mash finished at about 7:47 in the video. Your pump out hose was connected to the whirlpool port. Shouldn't you be recirculating the wort via the mash basket port during the mash? That would fix the temperature inconsistencies you experienced.I would recommend getting a longer silicone hose so the end just rests on top of the grain bed.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers

The solo has a hard time maintaining temps due to the sensor placement. I was recirculating a small amount through the whirlpool to keep the wort moving part the sensor in an effort to try help the accuracy. 👍🍻

I've got both the Flex and Flex plus and love them both. If I buy another I would get the Flex+ instead of the regular Flex as it gives you the option of doing pressure transfers. They have an upgrade kit but you're better off just buying the Flex + and saving a few dollars in the long run.

Also it seems that recirculation tube is the weak point of the system getting it set right. Does it need to whirlpool during that step? Or could you use their center drop arm up top some you could feed it to the center into a fly sparge nozzle?

Hey Bryan, I just got my anvil foundry and am prepping for the first brew day. Two questions: what's the best width setting for the mill for this? I currently have mine at .025" I think, but I'm not sure if that's too fine. Second, would you recommend putting a brew bag inside the machine to filter out any small bits?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 4 жыл бұрын
I use mine at a credit card width. Quite a few people are using bags now. It will produce a cleaner wort and you could probably double crush your grain. You'll probably be ok with that gap. It's just barely tightee than a credit card. 👍🍻

Great video! I know this is a no sparge system, but I noticed that in this brew, you had a total mash water of 9.5 gallons and a total grain bill of 12 lbs. By my calculations, that comes out to 3.16 qt/per pound of grain (water to grain ratio). I point this out because I have had efficiency issues with my Spike Solo and I’m wondering if it is because I’ve had too dry of a mash. For example, in creating the custom profile for the Spike equipment, and using a 1.29 water/grain ratio, I had a total mash water volume of 12.15 gallons for a 21.5 lbs grain bill..... if I would have brewed the same recipe with your water to grain ratio in this video (3.16), it would have been 17 gallons. What are your thoughts?

Spike wasn’t that helpful despite giving them a ton of information.

The mash water amount does seem light. If you use a no Sparge profile. Let it adjust for grain absorbtion. Without paying attention to the grist ratio.
@chesroberts2275
@chesroberts2275 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I plugged in all the numbers in the tutorial video on your page for brew father.... 0.383 qt/lb absorption rate. 1.294 qt/lb of water to grist ratio. I selected no sparge... I have the 3.5 gallon dead space plugged in like in your tutorial video... one thing I noticed though is in my recipe on brewfather, with my 21.5 lb grain bill, if I adjust the dead space to 6.9 gallons which is the dead space listed on the Spike website for the Solo Basket with 12 gallons in the kettle, the brewfather program shows the exact same total mash water volume as it did when I had 3.5 gallons dead space plugged in... is this a flaw with the Brew father program?
