Excellent lesson Matt. That lesson you gave me a while ago I still use today, it took a minute to learn how to tap polyrhythms in both hands but I got there in the end. Then pizz playing some of Bach’s suites and Borruee’s is fantastic for intonation, fingerboard navigation and creating a good tone.

After watching just the first 7minutes I find it a shame how Matt focuses in on something that is purely matter of taste and has nothing really to do with teaching the upright bass. I would actually argue this particular bass sounds quite good in the upper mid register and its good to see young players using this position. I guess I just don't understand the criticism.

Apparently there is enough difference in the articulation that it bothers him.

He's saying there's less "point" or "snap" in the note. It's more clearly defined in the lower position. Having a more pointed attack helps to lock in with a drummer and have a more crisp, defined sound to the rhythmic feel. Yes, the notes are round as you say (and he said) mid-neck. But they are more "opaque" in terms of attack.

Lesson 1: Jazz is unpopular and is not played for the audiences to listen to, it is played for the performers' benefit.
