Check out this new video where I breakdown my 3 YEARS of oil pulling with studies, realizations and 23 FAQ's • Oil Pulling Guide + 23...
Not all oils are ideal for oil pulling. In this video, I share my experiences comparing coconut oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, butter, avocado oil, butter and water to see what oil I think is the best oil for oil pulling.
Interestingly enough, multiple oils work and to get the best of all worlds, I decide to try something different which is to combine coconut oil, sesame oil and olive oil into one oil pulling dose! Using one of the three oils works too but I found that this combination of oils provided many different benefits and worked amazing for me!
- Studies
This study review of oil pulling ties together many studies into one cohesive nugget. I reference sources from it multiple times and highly recommend going through it if you are curious about the specifics of each study.

I’m just gonna stick to organic coconut oil pulling. I really got into it after I got my teeth professionally whitened 3 years ago and the oil pulling has helped me maintained the whiteness ever since then. Also my mouth & oral health has improved dramatically. Still plaque free & feeling amazing on the daily. Oil pulling it’s definitely a game changer as it’s really strengthened my teeth I will continue doing it.

I can confirm that sesame oil works. I used it years ago (no coconut oil, just sesame) and it had all the claimed oil pulling benefits. In fact, I don't think you need coconut oil in the first place, you can substitute for sesame oil, but I guess mixing them will do no harm.

Love the cube idea! I mix 1/4 cup coconut oil (organic unrefined or fractionated), 1/4 cup cold pressed sesame oil with 1T triphala powder and 1T crushed fennel seeds in a glass jar. I warm the glass jar in a water bath for a few hours to infuse the oil with the powder and seeds. Then I place it in a dark cabinet for a few days, shaking it daily. After a few days I strain the powder and seeds out and add a few drops of food grade clove essential oil, cinnamon oil, and peppermint oil and I store in a dark 4 oz glass jar with a pump lid. When I’m ready to pull I simply pump out what I need and swish! Oil pulling is a game changer and has dramatically improved my oral health and whitened my teeth naturally. Really helpful when taking probiotics as they create a sticky film on the teeth but the oil breaks it down and leaves my teeth super smooth and clean!

Awe man, I'm doing my very first oil pulling as I'm watching this video, April 1, 2023 and just finished watching at 2:37 a.m. starting oil pulling at 2:32 a.m. so I still have a ways to go. Anyway, I said awe man because I was hoping that you had the oil I'm using, Rice Bran Oil. I have extra virgin olive oil too as well as many others that I usually cook with, but I said hey, this rice Bran oil was made in India and oil pulling originated in India, so why not? 🤷🏽‍♀️🥰💜I decided to try before I have my 12 yr old daughter try, she has 3 cavities and has to get 3 root canals in May, if this could help or reverse the cavities in which I've heard then that is amazing and crazy as heck at the same time 😲😳anything to stop the pain in the time being.

Definitely add neem extract and essential oils that has antimicrobial, anti inflammatory, teeth whitening, removes bad breath, antibiotic. I had tooth infection and I swished clove oil, frankincense, neem extract and tea tree oil, I never had any swelling and it soothes tooth pain due to the numbing effect of the clove oil. I brush with baking soda with drops of neem extract, it works! HalleluYah, God created these things for our healing and protection against sicknesses, His love and wisdom is so great!

I like MCT oil better than coconut oil. Smoother and makes my teeth feel better than regular coconut oil. I prefer the flavor. I have used the dripping or juice from cooking a chuck roast. That was the absolute best. It included water and salt. Have you tried doing a saltwater saline rinse. Also have you tried generic table salt vs natural salt like Himalayan salt? Ive used whatever was convenient. Cheap vegetable oil was better than Listerine or mouthwash. However its bottom of the barrel. Olive oil is like medicine or somethings. I had a cut on my gum that olive oil didn't seem to help. MCT oil did help. I am a horn player and get aware of stuff whether I want to or not. Any oil is better than none. Some oils I'm pre sure are used up in the first 5 minutes. Most often I'll take a pull from a bottle in the truck between appointments or on the way to a rehearsal or gig. Very useful in my day to day. I do an oil pull with the drippings of whatever im cooking. Whatever spices usually seem to help.

I love the flavor of the higher end olive oils (which I use to make salad dressings and in some cooking) so have been interested in trying it for oil pulling, especially since I've noticed lately that my gums have begun to recede. Sounds like it's worth a shot and if it helps slow down my gum recession, definitely worth it. I'll first try the mix like you've done, only I'll do a 3:2:2 of the coconut, sesame and olive oils in hopes that it cancels out the coconut flavor, which I can't stand. Something that could be done is to mix a large enough batch with the right ratios to fill a full ice cube tray that does the medium sized cubes and then dose it out like that, and then just store the "pellets" in the fridge so they're not overly cold when you go to use it. Just throwing that out as an idea though given that I haven't even attempted it yet.

I'm new to oil pulling. Only 2 weeks in. It is helping with my dry mouth issues and even though I said I would never do it again, the first time I tried it, I have not missed a day since. I love the way it makes my mouth feel. I'm using Castor oil. Supossedly you don't have to swish as long as with other oils and Castor oil supposed to have many more health benefits. I was considering a mix of Castor, Olive and Coconut oil. Any thoughts on that? I love the cube idea. 💡 Thank you for sharing that.

I'm considering giving oil pulling another go once I have a disposable bottle I can use because I refuse to spit in my bathroom garbage to lessen the risk of having to clean it later. I'll probably just use unrefined coconut oil, tho using MCT Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil came to mind since it usually stays in a liquid form unless chilled; however, I'm pretty sure it'll still clog my drain during these cold spells if I spit it out in the sink. As for mix-ins, I would think using turmeric powder would just stain your teeth yellow since it can stain your sink and clothes that color as well. I've been thinking of adding peppermint extract to my oil for when I swish, but I haven't decided if I want to go that extra step. When I looked up the spelling of "fractionated", Helichrysum oil came up for oil pulling which seems to be anti-inflammatory and helps heal wounds. Since I just want to help fight back a little of this plaque on my bottom front teeth, I probably won't bother getting the new oil and will only oil pull until said plaque is gone. ...I also learned that "plague" and "plaque" or just one spoop/curve different from a disaster and a flossing session, lol, ...I need to go to bed.

Good information thank you. I am thinking also of the beneficial properties and also something that removes plaque and could possibly help heal gum disease. I came up with Chia seed oil (cures everything but death) or black seed oil, aloe vera, castro oil and flax seed oil. All have medicinal properties. The only one that is really hard to pull is the castro oil so thick. I think I like the chia seed and aloe vera combo the best. Honestly have not been doing it that long and I am very impatient so have not seen any real results. Know it is a no harm combo but would like results. If you would like to be the official tester to report on results that would be super. Thank you for this report.

I also use the Kirkland coconut oil and I add doTerra clove essential oil to it. Clove oil is known to be good for oral and teeth health. QUESTION: I heard that oil pulling over 2-5 minutes can be harmful. Since the oil pulls out plaque and other toxins, the longer you swish, after 2-3 minutes, you are essentially adding the toxins back in. Have you read any research on this? I made my own MP (mouth pulling oil) after using DIRT premade mouth pulling oil. About $35 for an 8 ounce bottle which I think is expensive. Yet the mouth pulling oil I made with coconut oil, clove, peppermint and another oil (I forget) was barely ok after using Dirt’s pre made MP OIL. My home made MP oil was yucky! If you can afford DIRTS mouth pulling oil, I would definitely recommend.

What about black seed oil? Nigella sativa? Strong taste may make it a no-go, but supposedly lots of health benefits from thymoquinone (TQ) content. Thanks!

Thank you for your brevity while sharing a ton of useful information. How long do you find is optimum? I generally swish for 4-5 minutes, which happens to coincide with the time it takes to shower. It's a convenient way to work it into my schedule, but I wonder if longer would be better. Also, I wonder if Turmeric might stain your teeth yellow? I find it can really stain some surfaces, so just be careful. You don't want a cheesy smile ;)

I swish for around 15-20 minutes. Like yourself, I do just tack on other tasks like showering, browsing my phone, cleaning etc and do think that getting into the double digits swishing duration gives extra benefits. For science, I tried to swish for as long as possible and I would say that there is a diminishing return after 15min + your cheeks will just hate you if you go for too long lol. I've heard that turmeric is something people add to their oil pulling but I have not tried it yet. I doubt people would do it if it stained teeth but who knows, maybe it does and ill learn about that when I explore with it haha.

You really should reconsider cooking with olive oil (except adding it in cold dishes). It has a low smoking point, so it can not be used in hot temperatures without harming your body.
@peternovak1607

opposite is true. Olive oil is less harmfull when heated than other oils. It has higher smoking point.

so its sounds like the oil does good job getting unwanted cavities and gingivitis while not bonding because of saliva allowing to get a clean smooth mouth. so you should floss first then do oil pulling.before brushing teeth with tooth paste of choice to get full potential.

Is the kirkland brand of coconut oil legit? Apparently some of these don't have the certified organic/non-gmo sticker in them so I presumed these are fake despite it saying it's cold-pressed, extra virgin, etc.
@brewinghabits
@brewinghabits Жыл бұрын
I haven't dug into it but so far, the batches I have had (2 big containers) have been good. I also would hope that a big company like Costco (where the Kirkland brand is primarily sold) would be on the ball with sourcing and selling an authentic product.

You talk about the nutrients in the different oils. Are they absorbed through the mouth or do you need to swallow some/all of the oil to take advantage of the nutrients?
@brewinghabits
@brewinghabits Жыл бұрын
I had similar thoughts and the answer I came to was that it's somewhat similar to creams and shampoos. It has all these nutrients that even though don't get consumed, do get absorbed/improves the efficiency when oil pulling. From trying all these oils, the higher quality ones that were either sesame, olive or coconut outperformed the other oils and I think that difference is atleast a bit attributed to those extra nutrients.

Sorry to see canola oil and soy oil not tested, being among the cheapest. If we use expensive food oils, it seems a shame to be spitting them out. Any input on which oils are nutritionally better/ worse if we swallow after pulling? Grape seed for example?
