People forget the situation the Finns were in. They were Co-Belligerents, not allies of Nazi Germany, big distinction. The Finns wanted to reclaim land the Soviets took in the 1940 Winter War.

You are absolutely right- it was Juutallainen from an interview about 10 years ago in an American magazine called Air Combat History. While most of his kills were against I-16's he fought off a vee of P-40's in a rare episode of Yank vs. Yank warbirds.

Juutiainen still flew Brewsters in the beginning phase of the Continuation War piloting it successfully against Allied lend-lease warbirds like the P-40 and the Hurricane until they were refitted with the much more formidable Me-109.

Yay for Finland! Yes, it's a little "buffalo", all semantics aside and no matter what anybody wants to call it. A true underdog that served it's underdog pilots very well. Even the Netherlands had a buffalo ace who fought against the Japanese. Don't let anyone dis the Finnish swatstika. Latvia used an identical red one at the same time. They had nothing to do with Fascism. Hooray for the little buffalo that could.

Fascism was in Italy. NAZIsm - NAZIonalism was in Germany. InterNAZIsm - InterNAZIonalsm was in red USSR now is in red Russia. These are different things. But now Finland is dead due to stupid InterNAZIonalism - InterNAZIsm as all Europe.

It was probably mentioned earlier, but the air-cooled Buffalo overheated in the tropics, where the Allies used. it. In Finland that was not a problem.

I believe there were two main variants. The B239 was issued to Finland and had a 1200bhp motor. It could reach 323mph (507kph) at 16500 feet, apparently. But I never flew in one so can only go on what I have read. The RAF/RAAF were issued with the B339 Buffalo, with an export engine capable of only 950bhp and was a lot slower. The RAF also added extra guns and armour which made things worse. Had they stuck with Brewster's original spec, they might have fared better in combat with the Zero.

We had to work with Germans to keep our freedom. In the winter war we fought the soviets alone and were barely abled to hold them off. We seeked help from the UK and US but they refused to help us. So our only choise was to seek help from Germany to prevent our country from being crushed by the soviets. And our alliance with Germany was military operations only. We never agreed with their political ideas and all jews in Finland were completely safe.

But USSR did right when pushed finnish border from Leningrad in 1940. If they didn't - Finns would anyway join nazis volunteerally or "not-quite volunteerally" (like the rest of continental Europe) and Hitler would had captured Leningrad and broke Northern Front.

OgrabliatorKorovanov, Stalin ironically pushed the Finns into Hitlers arms by attacking Finland illegally in Nov 1939. So ussr only had themselves to blame. Had the ussr kept the Treaty of Tartu in tact with Finland and never tried to annex all of Finland in the first place, the ussr would not have had to worry about aggression coming from Finland nor through Finland. There's a saying many have learned the hard way, don't fuck with the Finns, Perkele!!!!!

@BlueFusion64 The Brewster did not reach the Finland theatre until April 1940 when the Winter War was already finished. I imagine the initial encounters with the Brewster in the Continuation War were an extremely unpleasant surprise to the Red Air Force. Russia did have some formidable pilots but aircrew deployed against Finland were rarely drawn from the best Russia could muster and were usually no match at all for the Brewster and Me109 as flown by Finland aces such as Juutilainen and Wind.

the morale of the story is: dont mess with the finns
@RavishalBentham12 жыл бұрын
@TAGMATAGMATON I think you display a lack of historical knowledge of WW2. When the Soviets attacked Finland in 1939/1940 Nobody came to their aid. The Finns were still very vulnerable when WW2 broke out and the only thing they could do to protect themselves and regain their lost territory was to cooperate with the Germans. They were not allies or collaborators, they were co-belligerents with the same goal of fighting the Soviets. The Finns were never Nazis period.
@Wobdifurousness14 жыл бұрын
I think it was Warrant Officer Ilmari Juutilainen who wrote those words. He shot down 94 Soviet aircraft , making him the highest ranked fighter ace outside the Luftwaffe: 24 of his kills were obtained in Brewsters. Hans Wind shot down 75 Soviet aircraft: 39 of his kills were in Brewsters, making him the most successful Brewster pilot ever. He also wrote the Finnish airforce combat manual for the Brewster, enabling his comrades to make the best of the strengths of this much maligned aeroplane.
@Wobdifurousness14 жыл бұрын
The Brewster fared VERY badly against Japanese Zeroes. In Burma and Malaya the British/Australian air forces fitted armour plate and extra guns which the Brewster was too underpowered to support, and it was slow and unmanoeverable. Japanese pilots ran rings round it. Finland's Brewsters were flown in standard configuration by skilled and experienced pilots such as Wind and Juutilainen, who proved what this aeroplane could do. It could fly at 323mph, faster than early Spitfires and Hurricanes.

The Finns flew B-239 and 339 Buffalos. The difference was that All the Navalising modifications of the F2A models were ommitted for these airframes, a weight saving of over 200 kilos ( Beefed up undercarriage, fuselage extra strengthening, extra armour, dinghy & arrestor hook and hydraulics etc.) The Finns also received them unarmed, so mounted German weaponry, usually 4 x Mg 131 13mm heavy machine guns, 2 in the fuselage and 2 in the wings, a clearly better arms fit than the 2x .50 cals and 2x .30 cals of the US type. Being so much lighter meant the Finnish Buffalos had a much better power to weight ratio, and this improved performance significantly. As a result the Finnish Buffalos had a better kill to loss ratio than the vaunted Hellcat. Hellcats: 19 kills to each loss. Finnish Buffalos: 33 kills to each loss. No wonder the nickname for the portly little fighter was (translated as) " Heavenly Pearl". In fact more Finnish Buffalos were lost to mechanical issues and accidents than were shot down or destroyed on the ground.
@mtlb49064 жыл бұрын
Otherwise true but the finnish Brewsters had the original three Colt 12,7mm machine guns (one in fuselage and two in the wings) and one 7,62mm in the fuselage. Finns replaced that 7,62mm with finnish 12,7mm LKK42 machine gun.
@harri98853 жыл бұрын
While it is true that Finnish BW:s were stripped down, they never were fitted with German weaponry. They were retrofitted with captured russian 12,7mm (i.e. .50 but with higher velocity). except for maybe very late in the war when Finns flew the Messerschmitt Bf-109G2-6.

@MrPP19594 жыл бұрын
Not that much. Some material help, but officially Sweden did not give help. In Winter War (105 days 1939-40) they did not let the other countries help to go through Sweden to help Finland. In Winter War there were 350 000 FINNS, 25 000 died or lost, 43 500 wounded, and there were 7 500 SWEDISH volunteers, 33 died, 55 wounded, 130 had frostbites. Swedish volunteers were angry to their country of not giving much help for Finland.

Finnish ace compared the Brewster to the ME 109 as a "gentleman's airplane compared to a killing machine." Nevertheless, he scored many victories in a Brewster- which could be a formidable warplane when expertly flown.

@RavishalBentham Yes, perfectly agreed Finland should never be put in one basket with Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Croaria, Slovakia... Although viewed as an Axis force it just fought for survival. On the other hand it was on the Allied side too - in 1939 - 40 when USSR and Germany were de facto Allies and in 1944 when it fought Germans during the Lapland War.
@tyttiMK7 жыл бұрын
No, Finland was mainly on her own side, not on the side of Allies. They didn't really help Finland at any time and especially during the Lapland War was/were still the bigger threat than Germany ever was.
@tyttiMK3 жыл бұрын
@LAFOLLETTER Plenty of people do, especially, it seems, in the UK, and I am not even counting all the Russian and Soviet sympathizers. But of course not one of them have been able to offer any alternative course of action, except for "staying out of the war", which would have been impossible in the first place and secondly would have meant famine in Finland, anyway. But I guess that's what you get when you are a major power and have always looked at things from your own perspective, never from someone else's, especially someone from a smaller nation.

Sometimes it has to seize the drowning hands dirty. So said one of the English Finnish Paris Peace Agreement enters into force. Finland applied to secure Germany against the Soviet threat. Although the spring of 1940 was the Winter War ended, so does the Finnish-Soviet spaces were any good. Finland feared.

An interesting fact... The Finnish Air Force adopted the blue Swastika on a white background after WW1. About 1920 I think..... Long before Adolf Hitler decided to use a tilted black Swastika on a white background in a red flag as a symbol for his regime....

first plane in finnish airforce was donated by a swedish count and swastika is from his family code of arms.

@VirtualPilot Let me see, you have flown 1000s of hours in the IL2-1946, yet never shot down anything in the B239 Buffalo. Perhaps it's because you're useless and can't tell the difference between a fighter bomber like the IL2-1946 and a fighter like the Brewster. You should get off the drugs or at least try get some more flight hours on the B239. Ps You being useless in some video game doesn't make the real life plane useless.
