The maiden flight of the Brewster Aeronautical Corporations monoplane naval fighter (XF2A-1) was on December 2nd 1937. Brewster got the contract for 54 aircraft on June 11th 1938 and the roll-out of the first serial production aircraft was in the summer 1939. Only 11 Brewster F2A-1s were delivered when Finland succeed to buy 44 Brewsters. 38 of them were taken from the US Navy order and 8 from Belgiums order. Brewster 239 is an export version of Brewster F2A-1. The aircraft did not reach Finland in time for the Winter War. During the first years of the Continuation War they were the most effective part of Finlands fighter forces. Finnish pilots claimed 477 kills by Brewster 239. After WWII the aircraft were used as liaision aircraft until 1948. All remaininf aircraft were scrapped. BW-372 made a forced landing into a lake on enemy territory on June 26th 1942. It was found in 1998 in Russian Karelia. It became the property of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola USA, which kindly lent it to the Finnish Air Force Museum. The lendin term will end in June 2016.
The aircraft is the sole survivor of its type in the World.
Aircraft code: BW-372
The aircraft is on the show of the Finnish Air Force Museum. The aircraft is conserved.
Brewster Aeronautical Corporationin yksitasoinen laivastohävittäjän prototyyppi XF2A-1 lensi ensilentonsa 2.12.1937. Koneen voitettua Yhdysvaltain Laivaston Ilmavoimien tarjouskilpailun yhtiö sai 54 koneen tilauksen 11.6.1938. Brewster 239 on Brewster F2A-1:n vientiversio. Koneet eivät ehtineet Talvisotaan mutta Jatkosodan alussa ne muodostivat Suomen Ilmavoimien hävittäjävoimien iskuvoimaisimman osan. Koneella saavutettiin 477 ilmavoittoa. Sodan jälkeen konetyypillä lennettiin yhteyslentoja vuoteen 1948 saakka. Kaikki säilyneet koneyksilöt romutettiin. Vuonna 1998 Venäjän Karjalasta löydettiin 25.6.1942 järveen pudonnut BW-372. Kone päätyi Yhdysvaltain Laivaston Ilmailumuseolle, joka lainasi koneen Suomen Ilmavoimamuseolle vuonna 2007. Tällä tietoa kone on Suomessa kesäkuuhun 2016 saakka.
Kone on ainoa säilynyt konetyyppinsä edustaja maailmassa.
Koneen tunnus: BW-372

An incredible example of the reliable Taivaan Helmi (Sky Pearl)! Even the 'leaping lynx' insignia of LeLv 24 is still visible. At the time of its ditching BW-372 was the mount of Luutnanti Lauri PEKURI, a high regarded ace who achieved about 18.5 'kills' during the Continuation war. Amazing video

Years ago, when the first IL-2 came out, we had a demonstration of the sim for the actual veterans, wartime fighter pilots and Brewster pilots. Their eyes shone so bright when they saw the plane in the sim skies from outside and the cockpit views. They were absolutely supportive of what the sim folks were doing.

Этот брюстер после подъема с озера сначала стоял у нас на аэродроме г.Сегежа (карелия) со снятым двигателем. Далее судьба забросила его в США к частному коллекционеру и закончил путешествие он в Финляндии в музее.

Absolutely. The plane was in good condition when rescued from a lake bottom. The rescue team made their best to preserve the plane while the Russian mafia and rescue team / investors / others fought a money battle and the plane was left to rot in various storages. In the end it travelled via US back to Finland and was finally properly preserved by the FinAF museum team. It won't be repainted or rebuilt but shown in this historial condition.

@@SiivetWings due to the history I understand why it will stay unrestored. As much as I'd like to see it flying again. If I ever manage to find myself an a6m or a ki43 or ki44 I best keep it to myself and tell everyone its a replica haha seems like greedy people's wallets get in the way of an aircraft surviving intact

@@SiivetWings It was in good shape until the recovery crew or one of the shady groups in transport sawed the airframe in half behind the cockpit so it would fit into a container. The US Navy stepped in and seized the plane because I think it is actually still US Navy property. The conservation team at the Navy museum in Pensacola did a good job with hiding the cut line. If you look at other photos of the wreck you can see where it was cut. I am not a fan of the US Navy policy preventing recovery of their aircraft but in this case it was the right course of action to get the plane away from shady people.

@focke wulf The entire back story of BW-372 would make a good Tom Clancy novel. Early warbird recoveries from Russia were relatively straightforward until Russian organized crime saw vintage aircraft as a market to exploit. Buffalo BW-372 was mired into the middle of it. From Russia, it became the property of Irishman Michel Ryan who claimed to have obtained it through an auction (likely not) and had the plane cut in half to smuggle it to Ireland. www.warbirdforum.com/buffstarboard.jpg Another owner was somehow mixed up in the exchange as well. The ownership and money appears to have been channeled through shell companies and Russian oligarchs. At some point the aircraft appears to have come up for sale in the US. Years ago I had read that the US Navy had stepped in and seized the aircraft but I am also reading accounts that the Navy obtained the Buffalo with a trade of P-3 aircraft either to compensate the owner or directly to Finland. Either way, the Buffalo is currently US Navy property and is on load to Finland.

@@SiivetWings I'm so glad they did. I think it takes away a lot of history when they restore them. There is a SBD at the museum on Ford Island that is un-restored. Love that airplane.

+nonya biz Technically I think it is still US Navy property. When the wreck was recovered there was an attempt to smuggle it to Ireland. The idiots even cut the plane in half behind the cockpit to fit it into a shipping crate. The US Navy stepped in and seized it. Conservation work was done at the Naval museum in Pensacola. It is on loan to the Finnish museum.
