The manager Brian Clough, an English manager gifted with charisma and famous for his quotes and interviews. A talkative man for sure, but behind the arrogance and self confidence there are trophies and big accomplishments.
Either with Derby County or Nottingham Forest, Clough's influence was massive and effective wherever he went. This is the story of Brian Clough, since his playing days at Middlesbrough and Sunderland mostly in the 2nd division until his beginnings as a manager managing Hartlepool in the depths of the English Pyramid.
Watch how the best English manager the national team never had went from those depths to the peak of European Football.

Thirty years and an entire cycle of footballing modernity on from his grandest deeds, perhaps the most interesting thing about Brian Clough is his enduring prominence. For a football manager whose claim to greatness is confined to a nine-year period that burned brightest at Derby County and Nottingham Forest, and whose career only briefly intersected with the grand self-propelling fame farrago of the Premier League, Clough remains the most insistent of pre-modern footballing celebrities. Another astonishing documentary.

Brilliant documentary Balon you have out done yourself here. Clough was one of a kind, so charismatic and a master of man management. To achieve his accolades at two small clubs is a testament to his greatness. It's a pity his relationship broke down with Taylor, never quite understood why. Too bad Alcholism took a toll on his health and he failed to evolve his tactics/ management style. What a character though, pretty sure Mourinho tries to emulate him all the time. There's probably a lot more to it but a major cause of his falling-out with Taylor was when Taylor became manager of Derby County and signed John Robertson from Nottingham Forest. Robertson provided the cross that resulted in Trevor Francis' winning goal in the 1979 European Cup final and scored the winning goal in the 1980 final.

In Clough’s last season at Forest I went watching Blackburn away at Forest. Bizarrely at half time, Clough sat in the dug out on his own. Motionless, he looked like a stubborn and broken man. Both the Forest and Blackburn fans sand his name together in the second half such was the whole game’s regard for him. He was Forest manager at my first ever football mate I went to in 1981 when Blackburn Rovers played Forest in the cup. Howard Kendal was our manager and many, many years later I bumped into Howard in a bar and told him this fact and he laughed and said “the Cloughie tale”.

Not to denote Sir Alex but I doubt that he could take a 2nd division side and take them to heights undiscovered. When Sir Alex took over United in '86, they already had the reputation of a top side despite not living up to their past achievements. Clough and Taylor took both Derby and Forest who had little to no impact in the footballing landscape and made them the force that they were and provided league titles and European Cups with Forest back-to-back (which Ferguson couldn't achieve with the financial backing of the Premier League and Sky Sports.) Those guys did it with chump change in an era where football was strict in terms of player transfers and allocation of money across the leagues.

How Clough and Taylor made two 2nd divisions teams champions of England is beyond imaginable. That too without playing rough and dirty when playing rough and dirty was the norm. Sadly, nothing in football is guaranteed especially in 70s and 80s when clubs didn't have massive sponsors and were financially fragile, and failure to build on past achievements lead to downward spiral, unfortunately that's what happened here as well. Nonetheless, Clough was a true captain, steered the sinking ship till the end.

In any situation, no matter what it is, it's always a pleasure to be around someone who's 'the most' at something, and watch them show it. Without a doubt, this guy has gotta be 'the most', in terms of English-football knowledge, of every non-English person in the entire world. And that doesn't begin to cover all the other football cultures he knows vast amounts about. Truly a class apart.

Subscribed - what an unbelievable breakdown of one of the greatest Managerial careers. You've been able to keep me enthralled with minimal Cloughie clips/quotes. I think Clough is so unique in the sense that he embodied; arrogance, relatability, expertise, development, genius, calmness, guile, graft and grace. Legend

To this day, still one of the greatest achievements in English football working miracles with Derby County and by getting Nottingham Forest up from the Second Division, win the First Division title and then back to back victories in the European Cup (1978-79, 1979-80).

You didn't mention that Forest didn't get promoted till Taylor joined Clough at Forest. Not a coincidence, and neither is the fact that when Taylor left Forest they won 2 league cups in 9 years, then got relegated.

Stunning video. I was a kid and teenager when all this was happening. This captured it beautifully. As a Liverpool fan, I hated when we were playing Forest. Also, my first game I ever watched was 11th March 1972 Spurs vs Derby when Cloughie was their manager. Talk about a flawed genius. He and Peter Taylor were the living embodiment of symbiosis in football
