Brian Howard Clough, OBE 21 March 1935 -- 20 September 2004 was an English footballer and football manager.
As a player Clough was a prolific goalscorer with Middlesbrough and Sunderland, scoring 251 league goals from 274 starts. He also won two England caps, both in 1959. Clough retired from playing at the age of 29, after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament damage. He remains one of the Football League's highest goalscorers.
In 1965, Clough took the manager's job at Fourth Division Hartlepools United and appointed Peter Taylor as his assistant, the start of an enduring partnership that would bring them success at numerous clubs over the next two decades. In 1967 the duo moved on to Second Division Derby County. In 1968--69, Derby were promoted as Second Division champions. Three years later, Derby were crowned champions of England for the first time in the club's history. In 1973 they reached the semi-finals of the European Cup. However, by this point Clough's relationship with chairman Sam Longson had deteriorated, and he and Taylor resigned.
This was followed by an eight-month spell in charge of Third Division Brighton & Hove Albion, before Clough returned north in the summer of 1974 to become manager of Leeds United -- a surprise appointment given his previous outspoken criticism of the Leeds players and their manager Don Revie. He was sacked after 44 days in the job.
Within months Clough had joined Second Division Nottingham Forest, re-uniting with Taylor in 1976. In 1977, Forest were promoted to the top flight and the following season won the league title (the first in the club's history), making Clough one of four managers to have won the English league with two different clubs. Forest also won two consecutive European Cups (in 1979 and 1980) and two League Cups (1978 and 1979) before Taylor retired in 1982. Clough stayed on as Forest manager for another decade and won two more League Cups (1989 and 1990), but could not emulate his earlier successes. Forest were relegated from the Premier League in 1993, after which Clough retired from football.
Charismatic, outspoken and often controversial, Clough is considered one of the great managers of the English game. His achievements with Derby and Forest, two struggling provincial clubs with little prior history of success, are rated amongst the greatest in football history.His teams were also noted for playing attractive football and for their good sportsmanship.Despite applying several times and being a popular choice for the job, he was never appointed England manager, and has been dubbed the "greatest manager England never had".

I met Brian Clough at Old Trafford during a reserves game. I was scared, he had that reputation of clipping fans around the head but my dad was adamant I go and ask for his autograph. I was only 9. He didn't only give me his autograph, he sat me next to him and started asking me about my favourite players and talking me through the game - a true gentleman - a true legend. (oh and he agreed that Bryan Robson was a great choice for favourite player)

Bobby Robson was FC Porto's manager for two and a half seasons, winning us two portuguese league titles and one cup. And he achieved all of this playing an entertaining attacking football never seen before or since. He's the right man to introduce us to another legendary manager, the one and only Brian Clough. Nice documentary. Cheers from portugal. RIP both Brian and Bobby.

Love Brian. I’m a Forest fan from the 80s, from when I was born, taken to City Ground as a youngster and followed them ever since, now 40 and living in Brighton, still a massive Forest fan . When I’m feeling low, watching Brian Clough brings me back to life. Come on you reds!

Sorry, he didn't break his leg. He ruptured his knee ligaments - which is a much worse injury. Bones can heal, if you tear a ligament your playing days are over.

Cai Charlton the league structure and where players use to end up was very different back then, when he came back he scored 1 in 3 in division one for Sunderland. He scored 40 goals a season for 4 or 5 years, and played for England, he'd have done it in the top division.

He is someone I never tire of watching, listening too or reading about, I admire the Man & the story of Brian Clough as a Spurs supporter who grew up during his career as a Manager. There is no doubt he suffered when his dear old pal Peter Taylor died, they may not have spoken for many years but their love for each other was still there for sure, on hearing the sad news of Peters death, Brian wept uncontrollably it is said, I imagine it hit him hard & he would regret he had not spoken again to a dear friend & never will again...

Not just a footballing genius but a great champion of the working classes. Clough was hated by the English 'establishment' & despised by the old buffoons running the FA. In 1982 the FA doomed English football to decades of mediocrity after failing to appoint him as England manager.

I agree that Clough should have got the chance... however it perhaps wasn't as obvious or clear-cut as you suggest. Because by 1982, Clough had stopped winning things. His golden era was 1977-80. Too short.

@@SMSJSC If he become England manager with Taylor at his side he would have got rid of the backline that Greenwood used (Neal and Thompson) at the start of the 1980s...developed a strong wing play under Coppell/Barnes/Cunnigham, given Cowans and Hoddle regular caps and brought Morley in..Alvin Martin would have been partnered with a Young Butcher and Regis also given a run out and caps..He would have built a team for the 1982 World Cup..Derek Statham would also have been the left back not Sansom and played Viv Anderson as well..i don't know though how he would overcome the loss of Keegan and Brooking though in 1982...Maybe played Francis and Mariner more effectively together..(jack charlton went to town on greenwood saying Francis should have been feeding off a deeper Mariner and it plagued England in the second round '82'...who knows though..!

That was one of the few mistakes he made. Staying at Forest for 1 season too many. If he'd retired at the end of the 1991/92 season, he would have gone out a lot happier I think.

When it comes to the FA, Brian Clough wasn't one of your typical nodding dog yes men, yes sir, anything you say sir, that the FA always wanted, so he had no chance of ever becoming England manager. Shame really, as I would have loved to have seen him in that role, and I think he would have done a better job than many of the past England managers. I will always see him as one of the best managers England never had !

Steve Mills I think politics was also a factor. When the job was up for offer in 1982 he was the perfect choice but he made no secret he was a Socialist and with Thatcher in power an England manager with those politics wouldn’t have gone down well.

Remember all Brian cloughs success stories had a man called Peter Taylor in them,, Taylor told clough not to go to Leeds United and didn't go with him, and just looked what happened, clough was the front man, and was brilliant at all that media stuff, but Taylor was the brains, and advised clough in many things

I was lucky to have been at Nottingham university during Forest's promotion and then winning the league. I then moved abroad and so all my memories of Cloughie are from the great years and that is as it should be.

Absolutly the most charismatic football manager of all time, im a Man u fan and revere Fergie, but he was at Man u, What clough did at Forest is nothing sort of extroadinary, no one will ever take a 2nd division relagation candidate and make them a European powehouse in 4 years, unsuppassed!!! If he was in any other country he would have managed the national side, he would of won the world cup for england, but the fa never had the balls, such a waste!! He also never gets credit for the way his sides piay, lovely football, great disapline . Just Awesome, a football savent!!

I've been a Manchester United supporter since 1963 and have seen the ups and downs. The one man I wanted to see replace Matt Busby when he retired was Brian Clough. The one man I wanted to see manage England was also Brian Clough. He was call 'old big 'ed' and rightly so, but Cloughie backed up his words always and never pulled a punch. His record with both Derby and Forest stands as a testament to his genius. There will never be another one like him.

I'm not British but as a die-hard British football league and Man United fan since I was born in the mid-60s I have to admit that Brian Clough was and still is the best football manager ever. I am very confident to say that had he stayed at Derby County they would have won the European Cup and had he became England manager they would have won the World Cup a second time for England. He is by all means the Muhammad Ali and Pele of football managers.

Is there anyone in Hartlepool reserves now like John McGovern that could be shaped and groomed to win League championships and European cups ? Probably not, but Clough did that with almost all of his team. Shilton was the exception, but Clough took 'has-beens', 'naughty boys and other clubs' no hopers and fashioned them into arguably the greatest club side the English game has ever seen. He, with Peter Taylor's help, was the greatest English club manager of that or any other era.

As a blade, that last match at the city ground was bitter sweet. It's probably the only time I can ever remember being somewhat sad at the outcome of a match where we'd won. It's also the only time I've seen both sets of fans remain in a ground at the end of a match to celebrate the career of a genius and give him the send off he deserved.

I know it does not mean much too anybody here but I am going through a really bad period right now. I am a hard core soccer fan but only for USMNT and a 20 year vet US Army. don't expect anything to get better for my team or country but it would have really made my day to make the WC, Brian Clough always used to make me feel a bit better lol because of his never give up attitude, hope the best English National team in 2018. Fight hard and Fight right.....

Fellow vet here. My father was military stationed in the south of England and that’s where he met my mum. So, I love all football lol and cheer on both US team and England team. I suppose I’m lucky in that. Not sure what you mean about “going through a really bad period right now” but I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Rubbish. The greatest managers 'EVER' do it at club and international level. They can rebuild club after club, country after country. Not just two.

@@johnkavanagh3830 give your head a wobble! Only one manager has won the World Cup and Champions Marcelo Lippi. Clough took two second tier clubs from nowhere to the top of English and European football with modest budgets not Russian or Arab billionaire funding.

@@neilbone9490 Wrong! Derby were never at the top of European football. They got to a semi final just one time. And Forest didn't have a sustained run in Europe, yes they won back to back European cups, but nothing after that. You're talking about funding and modest budgets, who was it who first paid £1,000,000 for a footballer? I'll give you a clue, his initials were BC...

I think most football fans hoped Brian Clough would be given a chance to manage England. Sadly how a manage presents himself is of more importance than winning things. God Bless Brian and Bobby RIP

The greatest manager Wales never had too.. He was so close to that one. He had accepted it, on a part time basis. When Forest said no. International Management wasn't to be and must have been a great regret.
