That's right Bauhaus fans, Eno did it first.
FOR YOUR LISTENING ENJOYMENT ONLY
What is the openVAULT you ask? It's quite simple. Music that for lack of a better analogy, has been locked away from the general public. What has happened to the musical landscape is sickening. Far too many artists go largely unnoticed. We are here to change that. To drive the point home, this will not be some "best of" list aka Rolling Stone. No "Stairway", no "Walrus", just music that should be heard. Here at openVAULT you're going to be forced off the beaten path more often than not.
It'll be good for you, trust us.
Every song you will hear is from our private collection, so please NO copying, downloading or reproducing these videos in any form for this is strictly prohibited. You know as in illegal, a no-no. As stated before these tunes are FOR YOUR LISTENING ENJOYMENT ONLY! We won't sell, trade, or give up any mp3s, so if you're here for that purpose please step aside, you're blocking the view of others.

Imagine being a 18yr old coming home in 1974 with this LP, simply because you knew of Eno from the two previous Roxy Music albums you had, and listening to this song for the first time and feeling that finally...... Oh my God!....... this!.....this is what I mean.....this is MY music. Well I did and it was a moment I hope I will never forget.

please excuse and pardon me: i made a thumb down, because this reads like quacky to me - during the mid 70s they played it regularly in our old hippie disco and i danced regularly to it and it was absolutely on spot and not a single inch ahead of it´s time! people keep forgetting, that a certain time has always more to offer, than the styles labeled to it by the masses... since a few years i am on a revisiting trip, mainly to show some of my old musical heroes to my daughter (16 now), beginning with the who, my first fav band in the late 60s, and EVERYWHERE in the comments of the 60s bands, literally under every f... antastic band i read, they were far ahead of their time and underrated - imagine they say this about ten years after or even about the 70s stars steely dan - and so on and so on - sometimes i couldn´t decide if i´d laugh or cry... :-) exactly a decade later i myself played mock funk for the punks and scratched to it - i had a jacket with pictures from my old school books glued to it and i wore selfmade trousers from old kitchen curtains... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLGbf9N9qsytnmw.html 84 was punk losing it´s power and everyone searching for a new thing, mine became reggae and african music, but surely not third uncle... to round it up: i have been a big fan of brian eno since this very song here and after neglecting him for a long time i also come back to him now... love and greetings from germany

1974 I had a Saturday job in the local Sainsbury and, in my lunch break, went into the nearby HMV record store on the day Taking Tiger Mountain came out to get a copy. Unfortunately they were still awaiting delivery - I trudged back to work cursing my luck. I knew I’d miss the chance to buy it until the Monday but I wasn’t willing to wait so persuaded a pal who was on a late lunch to get it for me. Work finished I raced home to play it. It didn’t disappoint - Third Uncle opened side two and demanded an instant replay. 49 years on and it remains quite magnificent.

Nails the punk / new wave / alternative sound on the head. Forget about the attitude or fashion. This is the sound. I can hear a thousand bands / songs in this one piece of pure creative genius. The word “unique” is one of the world’s most misquoted words. It’s an absolute adjective. You can’t be “quite unique”. In the same way that you can’t be a little bit pregnant or a tiny bit dead. Brian Eno is unique. We are lucky to have him. And Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, et al, owe him big style. As do a multitude of others.

I am not sure kids today have the slights idea of the impact a song like this had on us kids 45 years ago. I don't believe there is anything comparabe, even in the slightest, today. It was way too different from anything else being played in 1974, and only five years later, with bands like Joy Division (which felt ' revolutionary' when introduced in the late 1970's) or Kraftwerk, that music began to sound more like what we heard in this album.

Eno is the greatest, most important single figure in modern popular music. To think he is still plugging his music discretely while producing bands like Coldplay (Teardrop is an Eno song, like Born Under Punches, or Heroes a 100% Eno song), and this album is still modern 50 years after most of these songs were composed, is most amazing.

Is that bass opening some sort of Floyd tribute? I am thinking of "One of These Days". I know that Manzanera and Gilmour are close friends.

Phil Manzanera is an excellent player and very creative, but this is Robert Fripp on the studio version of Third Uncle. I do love Manzanera's work on Diamond Head, especially The Flex, and Frontera, not to mention Big Day, it's unorthodox and beautiful, and I love his playing on Roxy Music's Love is the Drug as well.

The fact that this asshole had to state the obvious is the only reason I'm reluctant to hit the like tab. So Bauhaus fans are idiots because you happened to know Eno wrote it? I suppose Bauhaus fans are then also in the dark about Ziggy Stardust? Yes both versions are amazing. Quit being a jerk and kindly remove that opening line.

Bauhaus were original in their time, but ENO was seven years ahead of his time... He goes directly from Glam Rock (1974) to Gothic Post-punk,(1981) in only one song... two years before that Punk started even to exist... Not only can we hear Bauhaus in this song... We can hear echoes of the future arrangements of "The Hanging Garden" from The Cure (1982) in this song, too.
