Brian May Signature Guitar - In/Out Phase Settings Explained

In/Out of Phase settings are a feature on the Brian May replica guitar.
All the pickups are able to be turned on or off.
A few people have asked about the in and out of phase switches.

At least two pickups need to be turned on to set them out of phase with each other. As long as one is and the other down (doesn't matter which combination) they will be out of phase with each other. Creating a trebley tone.
Altogether there is 26 combinations creating a whole array of different sounds.
Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen, is known for his signature sound that he achieved through his homemade Red Special guitar and unique playing style. One of the features of his guitar is the "in and out of phase" switch.
The in and out of phase switch alters the wiring of the guitar's pickups and produces a different sound. When the switch is in the "in phase" position, the two pickups work together, producing a rich and full sound. When the switch is in the "out of phase" position, the pickups work against each other, producing a thinner and nasal sound.
May takes advantage of the in and out of phase switch to create a wide range of sounds. He often uses the switch to create a "quacky" or "honky" sound for his solos and riffs, as well as a more traditional and warm sound for rhythm playing. The switch can also be used to create a "phase cancellation" effect when combined with other effects pedals.
In summary, the in and out of phase switch gives Brian May a unique and versatile sound, and is an important part of his iconic guitar tone.

When selecting the pickups to our of phase you should've played the same thing that you did before you put them out of phase to hear a real comparison

Actually I count 11 The last three only count as one as no matter which pickup you have out of phase it has the same sound because thats how phase works Have a good day

Hi! Thank you for your quickly replay! I have another question: do you think that is compulsory to have a VOX AC30 in order to get the Brin May tone? I have a Blackstar HT5 and a Marshall SL5...ok maybe it will not be exactly the perfect tone but do you think it could go? Do you have some pedal you think it could be better to have? The purist wold say you need a Vox AC-30. But you can get Brian May pedal by Digitech which replicates his sound. You will definitely need some kind of treble booster

I just received my Knight Audio Technologies treble booster - I cannot stress enough how it makes a massive difference - just by using the volume control you can go from a clean sound good enough for the CrazyLTCL intro to the screaming BoRap solo - it's the one bit of kit I regret not buying sooner... (it also improves the output from the Digitech pedal - especially if your wireless).. And when the wife's support (and then patience) for my practicing runs out I use the treble booster straight into a AC30 am2plug headphone amp - and you can still get a pretty decent sound with the TB.

Hi, I have a technical question... I own an Harley Benton BM70 and the Digitech pedal. I tried the guitar without the pedal and I could set many tones with just guitar+amplificator (following the Guild manual). Are they correct? Because with the pedal connected the switch settings don't work. For example if I want to play the Deacy tone with the pedal what pickup setting I put on the guitar? Or it's indifferent?

Unfortunately I don't have a digitech pedal to test. My understanding was that the pedal is just preset sounds that can't be altered.

+Rock Licks Guitar Tuition Yes, you're right. But I found that using the right combo on the guitar pickups add some more color to the tones. Anyway the pedal is amazing, at least if you don't own AC30 and Brian May signature like me. No matter what's your rig, it's a must have, Brian says that the Bohemian solo tone is impossible to replicate because he used a very old amp. The pedal reproduces the very same tone.

When out of phase, you get a lot of hum. Is that just because you are so close to the amp or does it hum regardless?

Clay Page single coils do tend to hum depending on amp settings. I usually use a noise gate

Hey James, when, let's say the bridge and middle pickups are selected and both put out of phase, does it sound normal? How about 2 out of phase when using all 3 pickups?

Two pickups both out of phase will sound exactly the same as the same two pickups in phase. You need at least two pickups on with one in phase the other out of phase. Doesn’t matter which way round it is 😊

You can produce the same selections with only three switches... DPDTs with center off. I get 'em at Radio Shack cheap. Modifying one of my fakestrats {funky weird Epiphone with a POS 5-way} to three toggles instead of the 5-way. More voices than stock. HAPPY SOLDERING !!!

I'm using Guitar Rig 5 computer software. You need Treble Booster, Chorus Phaser and Delay pedals. I like to use a wah wah as a tone control to give a nasil sound

As of 12 October, 2023, I have turned my attention to the BMG Metal May. Not because I’m a “metalhead” per se, but because it’s a Special that’s not as easily mistakable for a Brian model. Any thoughts, James?

I like a lot of the BMG original designs. I think it’s because they don’t look like they’re trying to be a Red Special. They stand as a guitar in their own right.

No - it turns the signal from one of the pickups upside down in comparison with the other, so they subtract from each other rather than add. Peter Green had the same effect by having one of his pickups installed upside down.

+kaeseistcool All pickups OFF is not a setting, neither is phase switching one pickup on it's own, and switching two or more pickups in the opposite phase TOGETHER are not extra settings.
