I watched the 88 Olympics in high school, and didn't appreciate/understand skating half as much then as I do now. Brian is as light as AIR, full of life, and clean as the Calgary snow. His excellent influence on Yuzhuru Hanyu is so clear. Bless them both, and as others have said, wouldn't it be something if Yuzuru turned out to be a great mentor to the next generation as well...

What I never understood that year was why Orser thought he even had a shot at holding on after his long program. Boitano had been perfect. Orser slipped on his triple flip and did a double instead of his second triple axel. Brian Orser was a great skater but it just exposes what was wrong with the judging back then. He was the anointed one so he believed he could skate worse and win. It's why Lipinski's win over Kwan was so shocking. Kwan made no mistakes for the judges to hang their hats on. Lipinski was just on fire and could not be denied. In his interview afterwards he said he thought he had done enough to win. Did he really think that he was inherently better than Boitano by that much? The only skater(s) I could ever say that about is G&G. They were better than everybody else just skating around the rink. Sadly, in 1984 Orser really was the best skater winning the short and long programs. Hamilton was just so far ahead in the figures he couldn't be caught. Orser will always be remembered as the first triple axel ever done at the Olympics. Little knows fact, David Jenkins was doing triple axels in the 1950s but never competed it. There is a video on KZfaq. It's massive.

miceymolander How true! That became apparently to me with Pershina/Akbarov under the tutelage of Irina Rodnina. Then, I read about a Midori Ito interview post-retirement, in which she noted that she gave coaching a try but she wasn’t very good because everything was so intuitive to her that she just didn’t know how to explain the skills. Apparently, she never really had to think too hard about making her jumps happen because her body just knew what to do.
