In this video I explain and show you how to make a LONWORTH CHUCK for turning the bottoms of bowls. Seeing it, is believing how easy it is. Only difficult thing, is to be able to divide by two. even then you could just guess the center of two lines. I didn't make one for years as it looked difficult, actually easier than falling off a log.. Works well, costs very little, adapts quickly to the size of your bowl, can be made to fit any size of lathe. I love it, you will too.

Very helpful tutorial. As a former wood shop teacher, I was impressed by both your content and your presentation skills. You managed to make a potentially intimidating process quite manageable for persons who are geometrically challenged. Excellent pacing. I just made my first Cole chuck. My next task: the Longworth chuck. Thanks for taking the time to share!

Great video. I see a possible improvement. Draw several concentric circles on the front to help in centering the bowl.

Haven't actually used one myself, but I think those stoppers are pretty much self centring as you rotate the one disk against the other. 🙂

This was very inspiring... Do you think this would work for a smaller finger gripping radius by only using three fingers and enlarging the size of the fingers ..ex: instead of 1" diameter rubber stopper you make much larger like 5+ inches so it can reach in further???

Thanks for that Brian. I imagined that those bolts sliding in wood slots would have cocked and not slid good. Yours didnt seem to have that problem though. Perhaps the melamine surface helps things slide?

Several reasons that I think could help, is that the bolts have no threads in the thickness of the wood, and the materials may be thicker than what you would normally use. Full 3/4 back plate and front one was 1/2. Would have been better if bolts fit more snuggly in the slots. I think sometimes they roll the treads on, then they start with smaller stock since the tread area expands with the forging of the tread.

Love your concise instructions. One question. Are you very tall or are you standing on something beside the lathe? Just curious.

When I made the lathe, the headstock material was only so long, logging truck reach, I stand on the base of the lathe, wish it had been a couple inches longer. you can check it out by this link. www.lumberjocks.com/projects/242698
