Sam Angelo shows how the Amazing Doughnut Chuck is designed to hold a vessel. He chucks up a bowl and hollow form and finishes the bottom of each. Sam demonstrates how the Amazing Doughnut Chuck is put together and how it is taken apart.
If you are interested in buying the Doughnut chuck-I now offer it at: samangelo.com/index.php?route=...
He also shows the "Notched Ring Set" used to secure spoons, ladles, spheres and more. Visit www.RONBROWNSBEST.COM

Great review, Sam. Since Ron Brown's products don't seem to be carried by many of the online woodturning sites, I doubt I would ever have known about this item.

What I noted as missing is a means of centering and securing the rim of a tall vessel where it seats against the baseplate. That is, if a hollow form, for example, only has a rim 3 inches in diameter, that's not much of an area for it to seat against and it could get all wobbly and create a bit of excitement.

Sam, I'm sure you have heard of one of our most famous woodturners in Hawaii, Jack Straka. He showed us how to do this over 30 years ago. Looks like the exact copy of Jacks idea.. What we do is leave the piece in the faceplate, put the faceplate in the tailstock, and you have it perfectly centered in the Straka chuck, as it is called here... Going to watch the rest video now, hopefully they give Jack credit for his invention... Aloha from Maui

Well Wyoming got hammered with the white stuff. Wish I was there. But to your question: I am not about who should get credit for something. You can contact Ron Brown directly. This has to do with patents. I see lots of tools or accessories that are copied by woodturners, I am not the one to answer your question. Sam

tip: you can use the swing feature of the head-stock to cure the problem with the handle, just swing to 90 deg. (ie. the chuck facing you), this also works for bigger bowls too. OR if the head-stock can slide along the bed, move it to the far end and use the aux. bed extension under the lathe bed ( on the leg set)- this is where the banjo goes; and turn from the tail end, like how an outboard motor runs in a boat, only the propeller is the bowl you are turning!!

Thanks, Sam ... I have been eyeing one of these since Ron introduced them. You have answered every question I had! I have no doubt I could make a donut chuck, but I do doubt I could produce the same quality product, and besides, I would rather be turning!

Sam, Ordered mine 1st day Ron announced it was available. I use it for spheres, spoons, ladles, scoops, and of course, bowls and vessels. Does exactly what Ron says it will. And it does run true. I got the 12 inch model but use it on my 20 inch swing 1985 General 260 as well as my Delta 12 inch midi. Another happy and satisfied user. Hey Ron, when do I get my free one?

Thanks for the review, Sam. I have looked at this for some time now and based upon your review, I believe I will pull the trigger. I also note he has an offset rig that is along the sam lines as the doughnut chuck. A bit pricey but interesting nonetheless.

I had previously gotten a longworth chuck from Ron Brown, because for the price for it was very reasonable and I knew it would be more accurate than what I would be able to make. I didn't know he had a donut chuck, so I checked it out and ordered it.

It looks to me that it would probably be better to do the final tightening with a wrench, turning the knobs might over-tighten it when trying to align the "T" handles. As you said, it is going to take some time to get the assembly procedure down just right. It looks like a very well engineered tool and may be worth the money.

You make an excellent point. I believe you are exactly right. To align them you must, possibly, turn them too far. Thanks Sam

A vacuum chuck is nice, but can be expensive. And, yes, I do have a vacuum system and use it almost daily. But, for ladles and spoons with offset handles like Soren Berger makes, I prefer the doughnut chuck to a vacuum.

being someone of very limited financial and extremely limited equipment,,,,the gizmo looks awesome,,,,,,but,,,,,,there are just way too many parts,,,,it would appear that it was designed for those that think that they are all great woodturners,,,,,,there are those of us who want to turn but we just don't have the means to be all fancy and technical,,,we deal with what we have or have not,,,,we make accessories and equipment,,,,,,,,,heck my son in law made me a wooden wood lathe...we are still working on the gremlins but it is a step forward and for me it is like having a goldmine,,,,,,,,

Seeker Blue: a donut chuck is very easy to make. I made my own (and I am pretty new to wood working). It is even easier to make if you have a bandsaw, though a jig saw will work. You can even use a table saw to cut a circle shape.

Wish you hadn't shut off the camera while you were trying to true up the rings. As a newer turner, it's something I struggle with and it would've been nice to see your process and how long it actually took in real time with someone of your experience level. Maybe a separate video?

Editing a video can be a blessing or a curse. When I get done with a video I sometimes have 90 minutes of "film" I did cut out a lot but I left in what I think would help. What I cut out was nothing the viewer could not figure out on his/her own. This tool is pretty easy to use actually. I was just figuring it out as I went along. Sam

I met Ron at a World of Wood circuit in Milwaukee after attending several Marc Adams classes on cabinet making. I was just mesmerized by Ron's demo on top making and texturizing. Both he and Janice have been instrumental in getting me started in turning. I'm glad to see you associated with them.

That is one of my dream tool, the 12 inch 1x8 tpi would fit my midi lathe just perfect. I built a doughnut chuck when I needed to hollow out an already turned sphere (for my 2015 Christmas ornament) with very simple materials (2 pieces of plywood, and 4 long wood screws) which worked perfectly, but it was made to fit the specific sphere I worked on. A set like this would be just a perfect addition to my poorly equipped shop, and it will go right on my Christmas gift list (right under a band saw) which no one will see. Looking at how this kit is made makes me feel like I could fabricate something similar of my own, to a degree, since as much as I want, I won't be able to afford it any time soon, but I love the challenge of calculating materials and costs to see if it's even economic for me to fabricate (in the end most of my fabricating ideas end up costing on paper much more than actually buying the commercial product, so I don't bother and do without). Thank you for sharing this tool review Sam, always a pleasure watching you work and explain things we all take for (almost) granted. Yuval.

Seems like a good tool but don't really understand why you put in all that effort in to make the front ring run true? The lip of a bowl would be running true against the back of the chuck & you centered it with your dimple in the back of the bowl. The bowl would still spin true, even if the front wobbles due to uneven tightening of the bolts. I got a digital display & RPM sensor on ebay for less than a tenner to fit my union graduate. If there's enough room in the headstock of your oneway it should be easy to fit
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 7 жыл бұрын
I think that is a very good question. I would agree that it probably doesn't matter. And the bowl or piece does run true. I would imagine that the bit of out-of-balance from the ring may make things vibrate a little bit. BUT....you might suggest, I am not turning this very fast anyway. As a person showing my work, my procedures etc to 1000's of folks, I have to show the best process available. But I appreciate the question. Sam

Sam (good name) I understand and appreciate what you say. I have had some sort of woodworking business for 35 years and much of the money I have made has gone to buying tools etc. But the time I have dedicated to my shop is not always a good thing. It has to do with priorities in you life. I am in my shop every day-Sunday morning, Christmas day----I mean every day. Yes I have money to spend on stuff in my shop. But I am sure (and hope) you have put things into a better perspective. You just have to go slower or make your own jigs etc. My best to you. If you ever need help of any kind, let me know. Sam
