Timur Faizutdinov, a young Russian hockey player, died tragically days after being struck near the head with a puck during a recent game between Dynamo Saint Petersburg and Yaroslavi of the MHL. Doctor Brian Sutterer gives his thoughts on this tragic story and what we can take away from these terrible events when they happen in sports.

Please watch through to the end. When an athlete dies it rocks the sports medicine community as we ask what went wrong? What happened? and for me, would I have been prepared? The second half of the video is my candid thoughts as a doctor who cares for athletes as I reflect on this story and what we can take away from it. My thoughts to Timur's family, friends, teammates, and all involved. May we all learn from this tragedy to do our best to ensure it never happens again.

This is really tragic. I hope that the person who struck him doesn't dwell too much on this :( Is there any protection provided for the neck considering that this could happen to any player during hockey? It's already dangerous enough.

My detective sergeants son went snow boarding in VT back in 2004. He fell and hit a tree with a girth size of a roll of dimes. A small tree. EMS arrived in minutes and he was not breathing and had no pulse. Only visible sign was a scrape on the temple area. He passed away. He was 17 and was in the process of getting a full scholarship as a pitcher. He broken so many pitching records in CT.

I’ve taken a hit to that spot in hockey, right near the ear in high school and felt like my whole world had been rocked. My ear was ringing and I was dizzy and sat out the rest of the period, but it went away. This coulda been me, coulda been any of us that have played hockey their entire lives. Just an absolutely awful situation, looked like such a routine play. Helmets need to protect that area yesterday. Just really heart breaking. RIP Timur

as a hockey player myself, i hate to admit but i rarely see people wear their helmets properly because of style, but this was just such a fluke. Rest easy Timur❤️

ive been hit by pucks many times in the head, and im lucky to have no major lasting injuries, only predisposition to getting a concussion. so tragic that this happened to him. my prayers, RIP

@@cobii5174 it’s more like 90mph+, and players me included just complain about vision, pucks to the head happen all the time but it usually just gets fixed with stitches. Still love the game tho

@@cobii5174 most junior leagues most notably the NCAA requires face shields. The problem is that most if not all high level players choose visibility over safety. I'm not sure what the KHL rules are but in the NHL they're only allowed to wear a face shield if they have a broken jaw or something like that

@@Bbistheman_ yeah it's actually insane that they aren't allowed to wear a full cage. But I think it really comes down to visibility. No NHL player in their right mind would willingly play with a cage because of how much it obscures their vision. Look at goalie masks for example, there are actually large spaces in the cage where the eyes are. I'm pretty sure a puck could end up finding it's way through there. Its very dangerous but at the NHL level I guess that's what it takes to make those extra saves/plays. But obviously things like this are even more heartbreaking when they happen at at a junior level.

I had a similar experience happen in 2019. Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert died after a really bad crash at the Belgian Grand Prix. He was born two days after me and died at 22. Life isn’t fair.

Very sad. I know they probably won’t see this but still my utmost sympathies to his family, team mates, opposing team, and the Russian hockey community. The puck speed is 100 mph, or 44.704 m/s The mass of the puck is 170 g Getting hit at 100+ mph by a hockey puck...I can’t imagine...then hit in an extremely vulnerable area, damn.

All hockey helmets ship with an ear covering that protects the ear. High-level players remove them to improve hearing on the ice. In youth hockey (below juniors) USA Hockey mandates that players keep the ear protection in the helmet, but once you reach a higher level that rule goes away. If you look at Sidney Crosby, you’ll see he is one of the rare NHLers that keeps the ear pieces in place.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL, and other leagues, will make the guards mandatory in the future, to prevent this. The shields weren't at one point, but now are...So could do the same with the ear guards.

@@STARPHASE I’d be very surprised if they did. That type of thing would have to be collectively bargained with the NHLPA, as were they visors. The NHLPA was the reason it too so long for the visors to become mandatory, they fought it for at least a decade (and in the end, players not wearing visors were grandfathered in, so there are still a handful out there that don’t). Given the rarity of this, I doubt the NHL would want to start a fight with the PA over the issue.

hockey helmets come with ear guards from the company’s. most players, however, opt to take them off as they can be very uncomfortable

That was my tought too, 90% players take them out. If he got struck on temple, it is where ear guard should protect, if your helmet is a bit high it is exposed. Shot wasn’t that strong.

Not sure why, I personally dont even notice them. Neck guards are way more uncomfortable but I'd still wear one. Crazy to think hockey players didnt wear helmets, goalies didnt have masks

Correct, many players do take the ear guards out. Though it being for reasons of comfort is left to debate. Some players will swear they take the guards out so they can hear better, all other sorts of excuses. As a whole, it's worth having a serious conversation with the hockey player in your life (i.e. your own child) to make sure they're not taking off the guards just to be fashionable or just because everyone else does it.

In jrs I always kept my ear piece in, after seeing people ears get ripped off...we had to hold a game for 10 mins while we searched for the ear on our teams bench, the stands, and in our equipment

Helmet manufacturers have since introduced the Stem Guard. Not 100% on how useful these will be in preventing a repeat situation.

i loved what you pointed out about every time an athlete steps out we are assuming some risk. and you're right, its better to sit out and let yourself heal, even if it means missing the big game, then making your injury worse. i also hope that coaches will start to step up and make sure their athletes are well enough to play if they know that they had an injury in the past few weeks or days. thank you for covering these tragic things and being vocal about your opinions. we need more people like you today. :)

That was a case of arterial dissection. The same thing killed my father last year - unrelated to sports. Obviously something I spend a lot of time thinking about, and the first thing that came to mind when I saw this. Hard objects striking the neck/base of the jaw usually do nothing but absolutely can kill you if you get unlucky. Cricket instituted helmet changes after this and hockey probably should too. Obviously there will always be some risk and we can 't spend our lives wrapped in foam just in case - but if we're gonna wear a helmet it should probably protect as much as possible.

Was just about to recommend the same. I don't think people from non-Cricketing nations realise the danger in the game- partly because they've never felt and held a cricket ball and assume it's a long, slow paced sport. He was a great talent.

Very informative. Thank you. Made me grab my hockey helmet and really pay attention to what‘s exposed. I‘ve taken pucks/sticks to the face, but luckily I wear a cage. The idea of getting hit in the neck area is awful. A terrible tragedy on such an innocent play

Incredibly tragic situation. Always sad to see a life lost but especially when a kids life gets cut short. Truly hope the player who shot the puck will also recover mentally and psychologically from this incident. Rip 🙏🏽 Also, this video was very well done doc. As a former athlete who suffered MANY levels of ankle sprains and a few concussions I definitely appreciate your knowledge.

As a former player I’ve seen ALOT, and when these outcomes happen it really does shock me. I’ve seen some plays visually sooooo far worse than what happened here and absolutely nothing came of it. Things where you’d swear this player is done for the season or his career and next thing you know, they’re playing the next game. So these are always a shock to former players like myself. Having said that, great content, and you hit the nail on the head with this video Brian. Keep it up

Hockey is a crazy sport. The players wear blades on their feet. The puck is small and dense enough to kill a person with the right contact. A baseball could do that too... but baseball players don't have the blades on their feet. Those guys just take on more risk than most when they take the ice. This is a tragic accident but a rare one. Nothing really needs to be done. It will happen once every few hundred years. Terrible luck.

This is why I wear ear guards and a full cage on my hockey helmet. The first ever game I played without a cage I took a stick to the face and put that shit right back on. I'm not getting paid to play, I'm not risking my health just so I can look cool.

facts but it's diff at the NHL level, if guys shooting the puck at 100mph have their vision effected by a cage it's only going to INCREASE how often they hit someone with their shots.

@@highverson6402 maybe for those who've never worn full cages, but you get used to the slight impairment in vision. Plus basically everyone, at least in NA, wears them until at least midget level anyway. Making them mandatory across the league would also level the playing field, if they grandfathered it like helmets and visors before it won't stick.

Thanks for the video and your explanation. Thanks for showing the images of the helmet. I've watched a bit of hockey, and I still somehow had the impression that the helmets had a piece that came down over the ears a little bit more. I wonder whether an ear cage would be beneficial without hampering the players. Even if the cage were just soft elastomer that couldn't stop the puck, any absorption of the puck's energy could reduce the damage.

Such a tragic outcome. As casual observers, we may under-appreciate the risks of such a small but deadly object. A Philadelphia Little Flyers player and great prospect named Brian Page, suffered a broken neck during a tournament last November in Trenton NJ. Thankfully, he is alive and in good spirits. I would love to see your take on his injury and potential recovery of ambulation.

Philip Hughes I think had a similar injury he was a cricketer. It reminds me very much of his injury . Both seemed shaken then collapsed and never got up.

Hey man, super insightful information on the accident, and I think you presented your thoughts in a way that is respectful of such a recent tragedy. I just wanted to point out that your thumbnail does give off a a bit of a bad look though. With the pic of your body taking up the same amount of space as the pic of Timur, and the cartoon-y style text, comes a major feeling of inauthenticity and egotism as this death is so recent, and gives a vibe that you are just looking for views and likes in a super dark time. Again, everything else you did was very respectful in my opinion, but you might want to give the thumbnail a look if you worry about your image.

Thanks for the feedback. This was a tough thumbnail to make..I see what you mean with the font and proportions, tried to change it up a bit to be a bit more neutral and have his part stand out (font color). I include myself in my thumbnails to make them stand out and show that it's a person talking, not just clips or photos, but you're right, this one was a challenge, so thank you for the feedback. WHile it still might not be perfect, I hope it gives a better vibe now with the update. Glad you were able to see through it and still watch to hear my thoughts and thanks for the comment.

A point about not hiding the head injury... I completely agree, as I experienced this first hand. I used to wrestle but one day during middle school wrestling practice this one kid smacked my face into the mat and I was knocked out for just a few seconds.. didn’t tell the coaches nor my parents... this was like 2 months before wrestling season was over too so I was wrestling with a concussion, then when wrestling season ended my mom wanted me to just get looked at before track season just to make sure my body was all good. Doc confirmed I had a concussion and it was so bad I had to be out of school for the last 2-3 months of school. When high school came I was gonna do wrestling and football but I was told I could never do it again due to that. Point of the story is never hide your head injuries!

Just saw the video on TikTok and was saddened and curious about what actually happened. Seems like you really know your stuff. Of course RIP to Timur. Also feel bad for the player who hit the puck. Obviously a freak accident and I’m sure he’s having a rough time. Not a huge hockey fan, I don’t follow the sport at all but it just seems so dangerous. Saddened by the entire situation.

Hockey helmets actually come with ear guards that are mandatory in some leagues, especially for younger players. Most older players remove them. A small number of NHL players - Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, and Evgeni Malkin, for instance - have kept theirs at the pro level. I'm not sure how much protection they offer for the temporal bone, but they do offer protection for the ear and that area.

A similar accident happened to Phillip Hugh, who passed away after getting hit with a ball against his neck while playing cricket. After that incident, helmet regulations were changed in order to provide more protection to the players. It's sad that something bad must first happen to the players until regulations are changed on the protective equipment.

Such a tragedy a young healthy man struck down at such a young age. Wishing his family, friends, teammates, and fans the strength to face your loss and eventually as time goes on hoping you find acceptance. I hope the league, science, and sports doctors study how this happens and find a way to try and prevent it from happening again. Praying for you all🙏

Brian. You might be interested in doing a video on an Australian Cricket player names Philip Hughes. He sadly passed away from what was believed to be a similar injury. The manufacturers of Cricket helmets in Australia changed after his death. Might be interested to cover as a follow on from this video.

I think one thing that is worth mentioning is that the hospital he was in at Yaroslavl was unequipped to perform the neurosurgery needed to save his life and likely wouldn't have survived the transfer to Moscow to have it performed. He definitely would've survived had he been in Moscow at the time of injury. The NHL will never adapt a cage as the players don't want it as it obstructs their vision and the NHL doesn't want it as it protects the faces of their stars. Both parties don't want it, however, can see something like ear guards becoming a discussion in the future.

First of all, I feel for the family of this young man who is gone too soon. It's cold comfort to say "he died doing what he loved" in playing hockey. As a cyclist, I have lost friends from accidents, and I have had terrible accidents on the road. Safety does matter, but you will never mitigate all the risks. To try and take all the risks out of the sport, any sport, will destroy the game or sport. May it be cycling or soccer or hockey or football. There is risk, there is a chance you hurt yourself every time you compete, and hurt yourself that you never compete again.

I feel like this could happen in almost every sport, I’m willing to bargain we’ve all been hit in the face or head by a ball, or been tackled and banged our heads. It’s part of life in a way but as a society we need to build that understanding and those protective attitudes towards our brains and other peoples brains, instead of reinforcing the negative tropes that then create further traumas down the line. We had ear hole covers for a year in the 90's but they interfered with hearing and so called "2 ships in the night" collisions happened every game. Concussions went through the roof.

WOW 😳 Dr. Sutterer Earlier today, I'd just watched your vid of the soccer player who got knee'd by a teammate It's amazing how you basically covered that that type of blow could cause serious damage and even death Here, It actually did.... And I just watched you explain this a couple of hrs ago where no serious injury had occurred But You noted sports needs to remove all these scenarios before s death occurred Sad it's happened only moments after my viewing that footage of the soccer incident SMH The American Sports Federation or whoever oversees safety for all sports needs to expeditiously rectify all unaddressed possible safety risks in sports 🙏My condolences to the deceased family 😇

I dont watch hockey but when I heard this from Instagram, I was like wtf how is this possibly? It seems like he would just be in temporary pain or the most, a broken broke. Him being only 19 doing what he loves just makes this even more sadder. I also feel really bad for the shooter, even though it was an accident, people who are innocently involved hold onto the trauma and "what ifs" and get a lot of hate for being the "killer"
