I love seeing Brian talk business. Above everything else, all the gossip or tragedy etc, he's a musician, studio technician, composer. The real deal, not some weirdo who accidentally made a great record, he was in full command. A true craftsman.

The World: Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums of all time Mike Love: we should have kept doing surf and car songs
@nopeteys2424
@nopeteys2424 3 жыл бұрын
I honestly think Mike has gotten a really unfair reputation over the years. The narrative has become that he hated Pet Sounds and SMiLE but i dont think it’s exactly true. I think he just thought that they had an obligation to sell records and that going into this experimental direction was a risk for the band, now I disagree with his point that they should put selling records before making incredible art but he ended up being right. Pet Sounds was not received well by the public other than some folks who had great taste in music and other musicians. On the SMiLE sessions box set there are behind the scenes tracks of them all recording vocals and on “Our Prayer” you can hear Mike say in between takes “Is this its own track or just an intro? Because this is beautiful it could be a whole song.” So he definitely liked the music. Mike sang his heart out on Pet Sounds and the SMiLE sessions and you never hear them arguing on the tapes, if Mike hated it so much why would he put in all that time and effort to learn those complex parts and sing them? I think Mike knew that the music Brian was making in 1966-67 was really special but he was worried it wouldn’t sell and the band would be broke and would be back to working minimum wage jobs. Im so glad Brian defied that thinking and decided to keep writing songs that were true to his soul and weren’t just marketable but Mike is made out to be an enemy and i think its not right.
@jakestoddard3004
@jakestoddard3004 3 жыл бұрын
Broke and back to minimum wage jobs? Please! They had a dozen hits and four well received albuma before pet sounds. Brian and the boys could have done whatever they wanted with little to no repercussions (other than their reputations). They were millionaires! Mike Love had no excuse to be so uptight about pet sounds.

When I started learning guitar, I got two giant books of music, The Complete Beatles and The Complete Beach Boys. The Beatles were easy to learn, even the Sgt Pepper stuff, simple chord changes etc. The Beach Boys were more difficult, uncommon and complex chord structures. McCartney and Lennon were great songwriters but Brian Wilson was even greater.

The Beach Boys played a free show at about 10am in our high school gym/auditorium in L.A. in about 1963 when I was in the 11th grade. To this day, I still have no idea why my high school (Taft High) had them come there. It was fun, but it was Surfin Safari and that kind of stuff. Nobody had a clue that they would go on to do Good Vibrations, etc. and my personal favorite track, Heroes and Villains.

Thank you Brian for all the great songs you composed. When I listen to this it’s like a memory of my younger years and teenage years. I grew up going to Huntington Beach a lot back in the day.. and your songs remind me of those great times. In my twenties I used to go stay with my friends family in Illinois on the River. We’d water ski all the time, and everyone there knew me as the CA girl. And while we were on the boat with other boys we met, your song would always come on CA girls. I loved those moments. Thank you. I still love all of your songs and I agree I think you are a genius! Definitely have a gift. I live in Westwood now after living on Esplanade in Redondo for a couple years. And I think about the great times you must have had. I saw The Beach Boys play at the Angel stadium when I was about 12 when my European dad took me and my friend to the soccer game playoff and he said The Beach Boys would be there. It was great! And I saw you once in the bar at Bear restaurant in Huntington Beach but I too shy to say anything. Thx again for all your effort you put in making songs and making the world a better place to be in!

Was thinking about the time Brian and his wife were on stage with Whoopi being interviewed by her and another person...and as hard as she tried not to, Whoopi just out of the blue started crying, and couldn't control her tears. I (and I'm sure many other people) was thinking at the time, I know exactly where you're coming from Whoopi...it's just something in the soul that can't adequately be described, but that so many of us feel about Brian and Carl's singing and sounds. We knew that all of that didn't come from this world, but a higher one somehow. I've always felt that God gave Brian especially, plus the other Beach Boys an extremely special gift, and that gift is just so precious that it touches our hearts and makes us feel as Whoopi did that day on stage. I wonder if Brian can ever understand what his music has done for so many of us in that same special way. It's indescribable, unless we could speak straight from the spirit, instead of with words.

The first time I heard Pet Sounds I loved it, but I remember thinking that the music was so different that it would not be appreciated. I literally feared it would not be accepted and I found myself worrying about it, as if it somehow would hurt Brian and make him regret making an album too far ahead of it’s time. I would purposely watch people and try to interpret their reaction to the album. When I felt someone didn’t show the appropriate level of appreciation for a song, I took it personal. As weird as all that was, ( and that was back in ‘65 ), I still feel that way now. I was 16 then, and 72 now.

All of Brian"s music is nostalgic to me. Since my early teens I thought I was going thru what he composed, and I bet a lot of us fans feel that. And I believe he has put into his creations sounds that have been part of rock & roll history since Bill Haley. Everything has something from my past - or has Brian tricked me into that? He is such a true gift, not only to music, but to several generations of people who grew up in a raw world that could go to The Beach Boys and exult in fun and decent expression that convinced us that we can be ourselves and succeed - cuz Brian already mapped it out for us. I wish we could thank him personally for that,

Quite possibly the greatist album of the Rock & Roll canon. Definitely in my top 3 favorites. If only they could have made it longer. But I don't know if that was even possible on vinyl. LOVE IT TO DEATH

Some a that good old california gene pool. Defined features, handsome man that Brian Wilson. His associates, too. They all have that anglo mix with Mexican and latino..european genius, the melting pot of humankind, everyone included, the perfect blend for getting those jobs done and keeping face while it's doing. Such a great document for history. No political/social guilt trip tagline like white guilt or whatever will ever diminish the fact that Brian Wilson and co have been a tremendous help to this race of people on this planet. We're not small minded and petty. And all of our characteristic colors of being human have illustrated a significant area of importance to deserved acclaim by folk that get labeled common.

This is the best video production I have seen. We all love Brian so much! I saw him in Seattle in July 2012 and now see him again in Minneapolis in July 2013! Life does not need to be better than that!

I prefer Brian as a vocalist, but they were both great

@@subg8858 Their ranges were similar, but at that time, in my opinion, Carl's voice had a sweeter quality to it that was required for God Only Knows. As to Good Vibrations, I don't know. Maybe Brian just preferred Carl's voice with Mike's words.

But Brian was also not wanting to tour during this era, so Carl would have to be the one to perform them live, so best to have his voice on the album as well.
