Brick & mortar frontier town bank becomes NorCal downtown home

When Bert Crews was looking for a home in the tiny frontier-style town of Tomales, California, it just happened to be the moment when Bank of America was selling their 19th-century brick and mortar building. Crews, a native of Texas, was used to converting warehouse-type buildings into loft homes and so within 24 hours, he had bought the old branch.
He needed a bit of help for drilling through the concrete to put in the plumbing, but he put in his own "galley-style" kitchen with a mini-fridge, half-sized dishwasher, and small stove/oven unit. He uses the vault as storage for his art supplies and athletic gear and he left the wooden teller windows in place, surrounding them minimal furniture (table and chairs, couch, and grand piano).
The home hasn't lost the feel of a historic bank and in 2000, Barry Levinson used his home as a set for the movie "Bandits" with Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate Blanchett.
For Crews, the inconvenience of the additional noise of downtown living- he's sandwiched between a bar and a hotel- are outweighed by the benefits, especially for an artist (i.e. he can play his instruments late at night).

I'm not sure why lot of people posted negative comments on the interior design of the property. This channel is not dedicated to "on trend" home design, it's a place to share alternative ways of living and housing. 1 000 000$ or designer houses are not of interest here, but I think this re-purposed bank is. Thanks for keeping your mind & hearts open! :)

All the comments about hiring an architect, the appliances, the small kitchen, the small bathroom, it was not planned properly, etc. are people who may have the extra money to do all of these things. I think the place is great and I would take it in a minute. He did the renovations that were within his budget. Everything does not need to be pristine and top of the line....especially if the person does not have the money to do so. Maybe over time he will make other renovations...maybe he won't.

I cant imagine howya got people to even try and jack hammer thru the cement pad for a shower. I needed the spare space in my back room to plant the base for the new furnace and they stubbornly opted to drop the thing in my kitchen instead. "Would have taken too much time" Was their cowardly excuse. They did not have to live with the furnace rumbling away in their kitchen and I am sure, those jerks would have found a way if it was their kitchen. I love wat ya did. A lot of folks are renovating old commercial buildings as well as former civil service structures into residences now. You have all got great and adventurous ideas that are hugely impressive. Thanks for Sharing man !

I feel there are enough features in the building's architecture that scream "Bank" that he could have torn some things down and really impressed his needs, comfort and tastes upon the building without loosing the charm. The double hight and the tall windows are gorgeous :) But it's his home after all, f he's happy with a minimum impact, good for him.
