LEGO Barad-dûr designer interview: • How LEGO Barad-Dûr got...
LEGO Rivendell interview: • LEGO 10316 The Lord of...
A potential future Middle-earth set may have been revealed in advance, thanks to a sneaky reference in LEGO Icons 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr.
Standing over 83cm tall, 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr includes 10 unique minifigures, is the ideal companion set for last year’s 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, features four-modular sections and is packed with whimsical moments, secrets and intriguing details.
In fact, one of the latter may well prove to be a subtle hint that another potential LEGO Lord of the Rings set might be arriving at some point in the future. Located in Sauron’s throne room is a small black knob that can be pulled, revealing a hidden Palantir orb and a map of Middle-earth.
Within the crystal ball can be seen a printed image of the white tree of Gondor, which may well suggest we’re getting our first glimpse of an upcoming Minas Tirith set. The Lord of the Rings location has yet to be recreated in LEGO form, so it might be possible that a model based on the capital of Gondor may well be on the way at some stage.

For Minas Tirith you HAVE to go big and bold. Make it one of the biggest sets ever in the realm of a Millenium Falcon or Eiffel Tower. But then also make a few Diorama Sets like Mount Doom, the Bridge of Khazad Dum or Pellenor Fields under 100$ to go along with it. Maybe even 2 battle Packs and more Brickheadz, so people also have a cheaper option to buy.

Honestly, a good way to go would be to make some "midi scale" models and include 1 desirable minifigure with each a year after the more expensive version has been on the market. Similar to what they are doing with the Disney line, where they had the $400 castle, and then the $50 version with a single figure. Satisfy those with $500 of expendable income, and provide an alternative for those that don't, and this way the more expensive builds fund the R&D for the high end minifigures. So for instance, this year release a $50 Rivendell midi build that comes with Elrond, next year do the same with Bara-Dur with Sauron. Yes it would anger collectors who value exclusivity, but I care more about the general fan with only $50 to spend who is really pining to return to Middle Earth.

It would be great if Lego did LOTR battle packs, as they do with Star Wars and potentially some smaller builds, play-scale style. Or even "midi" scale or architecture scale sets. But they've set precedent--the Shire, Minas Tirith, or even Rohan become the logic next choice, and at a scale similar to what they've done already. Unlike a Star Wars, I think that they have a much smaller base of things to design and sell with LOTR. They've set precedent. Bring in Minas Tirith!

Minas Tirith imo is something that can only be done justice when done as big as possible. It should be the UCS millenium falcon of the LoTR line. I absolutely would love affordable/smaller/playscale sets, but Minas Tirith should not be one of them. It deserves to be the biggest lego set to date imo. If your gonna do it big, do it right. If its going to be expensive, go all out. Meanwhile, the playscale sets should be things appropriate for the size. A mumakil, battle packs, maybe even a proper fell beast etc.

The problem I see with Minas Tirith is that you couldn't possibly fit minifigures without having something that could be the centerpiece of a convention: either you go microscale, or you do only a small section, like the top tier with the tree and Denethor's Hall. The Burrow would be much more fitting for the size they are aiming, either from The Hobbit with the 13 dwarves, or Bilbo's birthday from the LotR; scenes from Moria (the lake, Balin's tomb, Kazad-dum) or Lothlorien have also potential. Maybe the Prancing Pony... Personally, I would like a nanoscale Minas Tirith, with the same final size (and cost) of the latest Hogwarts Ground set: not everyone has a rennaisance villa to showcase all these massive sets...

I think it would be a good idea to go about making a giant Minas Tirith set like they are doing with hogwarts. Break Minas Tirith down into a bunch of small-medium sized sets where you can put them together to make a giant set! That way you can still get some small sets for army building and then once you get them all, you have a bunch of orcs/gondor soldiers to add to your army!

I would love to see Minas Tirith but built with many sets same as Hogwarts. One set could be front gate with Grond and some Gondor soldiers, orcs and Battle Troll maybe One set could be part of front wall with orc siege tower, with couple of Gondor soldiers and orcs ( if You buy many of those sets You could connect it with front gate set One bigger set could be second level maybe, and the biggest set should be the top..... We could also have set where Pippn sets fire, I could imagine dozens of sets tu put together to make as minifig scale Minas Tirith as possible, othervide it will be probably micro scale set. It would be also nice to get Pellenor fields battle packs: One set could be buildable Oliphant with some Harad archers and Harad leader and also 2 Rohirrim riders One set could be Fell beast with Witch King, plus Eowyn Merry and Theoden, also some orc and buildable catapult IIt would be the best way for more cheaper sets fot this solution, You can buy the sets You want to spend money on and build armies, or buy everything and have completed collection

If LEGO want to carry on making large builds from LOTR, they need to build sets to fall at most within 100-150$ range. Micro or Mini scale builds of larger things with some minifigs for display, just like the new smaller Star Wars ships under $100. No one has the display space for both Rivendell or Barad-Dur, let alone the near $1,000 to have both chunks of plastic. I want sets to display on my desk, or on a bookcase or on a shelf in my room, something at a scale suitable for display and doesn't command an entire dedicated plinth in my home. Had the current sets been under $150 each, and knowing there's a third now, I'd have bought all 3. But as it stands, I've refused to buy any current $300/400+ LOTR sets

Great points for and against a Minas Tirith. I've purchased both LoTR sets from the past two years, and I would love to see it, but it's hard to do Minas Tirith justice. Micro scale would not really work, as both sets have set a precedent for minifigure scale. They could take a section of the city, but it would just be unepic. It's a tough problem, but if there's a third LoTR set, there are quite large shoes to fill.
@memyselftheone
@memyselftheone 14 күн бұрын
I don't think they can do Minas Tirith justice, so I don't think they should do that - not as a complete version of the city anyway. Maybe they could do the central part with the Tower of Ecthelion, the White Tree and the big walkway. And just forego the tiered city beneath (and the hall of kings). Alternatively; focus on the Hall of Kings and make 'the Citadel of Minas Tirith', but nothing else. But the thing is; whatever they choose to do; some people will be disappointed. I would personally much rather see a nice depiction of (a part of) Hobbiton or a nicely detailed Prancing Pony.

As much as I’d love Mina’s Tirith, I don’t think it would work all that well as a minifig compatible thing. They’ve have to do something similar to what they did with Hogwarts to do it properly. I feel that Helm’s Deep or Bag End would make much more sense for the pseudo play scale they’re trying to stick with. And as someone who has Bag End from 2012 as one of their white whale sets, I’d love to get another version of it in the newer style. They could even make it similar to the layout of Rivendell, with the hobbit hole on one side, and then Bilbo’s party on the other. Honestly, I just want an excuse to get Rosie and that dude who’s always scowling 😂

Prediction: Minas Tirith will consist of two different sets split down the middle (with the half interior view) allowing it to be combined into one massive build with the purchase of two units. Just like the Egyptian pyramids. This appeals to people who are wanting the massive build option and those who can only afford half of one. (Yes this is a grab for more cash). Fingers crossed we get some battle packs to appease the people who want more affordability, but it’s likely that premium figures (ie Faramir and Denethor will be locked behind those higher prices).

One solution Lego could employ would be a medium size set which allows for different builds, like a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 set…where those with a smaller budget could get a good build, and those with bank could buy two or three sets and expand the build by combining the sets. This would cause a doubling of mini figures, but would probably work if they were army building figures.

I think minas tirith would be amazing, but maybe do it in sections. You can start with the top section (with the white tree and buildings), then add a new lower section each year. That would make it more affordable and keep the interest for longer (they can then stop making new levels if the interest dies out). Collectors can then make it as big or small as you want.

Best thing I can think of would be midi-scale with micro-scale places and minifigure scale spots. Like a forced perspective type deal. We should get some smaller sets too, like Shelob or khazad-dum and Mt doom, possibly an orc forge.

I say definitely go nanoscale with this. Maybe mix in some minifig scale interiors accessible and viewable from behind, a little like the Star Destroyer or death Star sets. These huge sets aren't just incredibly expensive, they also require significant display space in people's homes. If you're a big enough LOTR fan to want a Minas Tirith, you probably are already displaying one of the two big LOTR sets already.

Minas Tirith is too massive to ever make for a satisfying minifigure-scaled LEGO set. I'd prefer the royal keep of Edoras, the capital of Rohan. It's smaller and more compact a building, making it perfect for a $200-300 set. Plus, it could include a number of characters who've never gotten any figs, like Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer, and Grima Wormtongue. And if you don't want a LotR set, it can easily be repurposed for regular Castle and Viking minifigures.

I think the Minas Tirith set could be made with a combination of few sets just like the latest system endorsed by Hogwarts Castle. This way you can solve the price tag issue. I think one approach could be dividing Minas Tirith into two main parts. Buying one set will get you, let’s say 9,000-10,000 pieces (for $1,000), all of which will be used for the main building. The same pieces could also be used for the second part (if you disassemble the main build) with some left over. That way, fans get to enjoy each part of the iconic LOTR scene, one at a time. For the diehard fans, it isn’t a stretch for them to spend 2k to get something they really want. For those that want the whole thing, but don’t have / don’t want to spend that much all at once can buy one at a time (say, in a year). I think it’s doable if LEGO stretch out the theme and make them available for sale for 3-4 years. They’re going to bank a lot of $ just selling this set alone (assuming they did a reasonably good job on the design). Even better if they have two waves of smaller LOTR sets, battle packs at $10/20/50/100 during. It will be hot. Perhaps even rival the sales of themes like SW / ICON.

They aren't coming up with a whole bunch of cheap sets because they don't want to oversaturate the market. They want people to feel like that have something special. With how seemingly popular the two lotr sets are, I'm really hoping Lego will decide to expand the the theme with some smaller sets. I doubt we will get any standard playsets anytime soon, as lotr is not really relevant at the moment, especially with children. But, I think it's still possible for the theme to take a note from Star Wars and release adult oriented sets in the form of vignettes, and microscale locations. As for the next BIG set, Minas Tirith seems the most likely, but I would also take into consideration Bag End or the entire Hobbiton. I know that in one interview the designers said they considered it, but decided to make Rivendell instead, but that was back when they thought they would only do one set. There already is a Lego Bag End, but I think the location is too iconic not to get an 18+ treatment. Plus the old one was based on the Hobbit movies, so to differentiate them, the new one could be focused on Bilbo's 111th birthday.

Minas Tirith would make the most sense for another big LOTR set. I mean if you take Rivendell as representing the first film, Barad Dur representing the second, Minas Tirith would be perfect to represent the third film. 05:09 LEGO are a profit making company just like any other. They know this is the best way for them to make money. Because even the giant expensive sets still get snapped up even just for the figures. And sure a lot are getting parted out or the minifigures split and sold on from the set- but given that LEGO now owns Bricklink (one of the biggest sites for selling on Lego parts and minifigures) they don’t really care about people not liking giant sets because of the cost. Because there’s enough scalpers and resellers out there to still make them worth it. And even with themes like Star Wars, gone are the days of cheap battle packs full of wanted figures. You don’t get a unique character with them anymore and they’re only going up in price, with some attempts to justify the increase being made by adding in builds that most don’t really want. 11:22 Ironic considering that is pretty much how those shots were done IRL. It is the same physical set in most of the shots rejigged, redressed and shot from slightly different angles to make you think it’s a new set, but it’s not. It’s the same one. 😂

Very much looking forward to a LEGO Minas Tirith set! I also must say that the LEGO Fell Beast set for me felt like how it would be to have smaller sets: very nice and confined. But I guess we'll have to do with the giant sets. Minas Tirith is probably a good set to buy multiples: I'm assuming there will be several soldiers and orcs, good for 'army building', so you won't end up with tons of multiples of unique characters.

@@manu1788 This is about the second category of fans mentioned in the vid: the ones who actually want a bigger Minas Tirith. For that group this may well be a good set that gives them an expanded Gondor army. You, like me, seem to fall in the first category of fans: those wanting smaller sets. But as said, we'll have to get used to the giant sizes...

What you said about LOTR not being the big brand it was a decade or two ago being a reason they made its return like this and haven't given it full waves yet, trying to capitalize on one big sets' sales per year - I mean, the same is true of Harry Potter. The old movies are long done and the latest releases were controversial and far from a universal hit - EXACTLY the same situation as the LOTR franchise. And yet, they keep doing HP waves regularly, even recycling sets now for a second time that have been made already since it returned in 2018 - and it's working! I don't see anyone upset about it, they're happily buying it, just like Star Wars remakes. So I dunno if that idea holds up, Harry Potter feels like its a good bit worse than lord of the rings in terms of the state it's in right now and yet the legos are very successful sticking to only the old movies. Don't see why LOTR couldn't do that, HP is putting huge expensive sets out AND regular ones

My max to spend on a Lego set is 300$ I really want the barad dur and rivendell and the others ucs sets from this theme that eventually will get released But spending this much money on just plastic it’s to damn crazy😭 I will wait for the play sets or those a little bit more expensive (max 300$) from these theme Even 300$ it’s to damn much For me It’s really need to be worthy to spend this money On my wishlist up to 200$ it’s the new great hall and the the burrow collectors edition The rest is under 130$ If people didn’t spend this much money on a set Lego would low down the damn prices

To paraphrase John Lennon: "I'd like to ask your help: To the people in the cheaper seats, shake your 10-minute build sets. And the rest of you can just beam with pride over what you can afford". Minas Tirith is the ONE set I want out of everything Lego could potentially do. And if they do it, it deserves to be big. Really big. I've nothing against them releasing a smaller version for the cheapskates, but those of us who want the real thing should also be catered to.

They could go the Harry potter route and have it be multiple sets that you can put together and build a full Minas Tirith. At least that way you can get a part of it and at least have a taste. I would sooner see them do Minas Ithil, at least that would be possible in one go...still real expensive though.

Distinct? Are you married? My mrs cracked up when she saw the display model and and pointed it out was just like her disney castle. I'm up to bag 3. The question for me is, elves, bad guys, check. Humans? Boring. So will this set be awesome enough to inspire getting it anyway. Also, is what they're trying with lord of the rings simply selling you an entire wave in one set? Depending on the day these lotr sets conveniently cost as much as a full wave of play scale sets... EDIT: Don't worry about the scale. I restored our ucs hogwarts castle recently and finally came to warm happiness with lego micro scale. It can be great.

Minnis Tirith should 100% be an "architecture" style set. I would look at himeji castle for scale of detail as it displays beautifully but also keeps size down. I still want a few figures, but we don't need a giant $550 doll house that no one is going to ever actually play with. Lets be honest.

8:58 And here is the problem. Amazon has ruined the overall Lord of the Rings brand with their dismal Rings of Power show. So it is not pulling in new, young fans. As a result, the average LOTR fan is an older adult, which can afford large sets. So don't hold out for small LOTR sets anytime soon.
