HUGE drivability improvement - DC2 is a whole new car!

Күн бұрынMan, I can't believe the Integra's slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder were that bad! The clutch hydraulics are finally operating as they should and I only changed them on a bit of a whim as I noticed some wet residue on the slave cylinder. I've had slave cylinders die on multiple cars over the years so swapping these out was on the list just for peace of mind but it was really time!

Nice to see the car coming along. I drained the old gas from my car today. I was expecting to see chunks of rust and debris in the tank, but it was surprisingly very clean. Aside from the filter sock, the fuel pump looked to be in good shape too...absolutely rust free. The only snag I ran into was disposing the old gas. Its so hard to throw away stuff in Japan. It's either very difficult or expensive. I took it to a gas station and asked if they could dispose of it for me, and they looked at me as if I was insane. So I took it to another station and they told me to soak it up a bunch of newspapers and throw it out with the combustible trash. That didn't sound right so its in the garage for now until I can figure out what to do with. I still have quite a lot of work left. The biggest challenge now is removing a broken fuel rail stud that is stuck in the intake manifold. So much crap work to do before first startup. Oh, and my guess is, an Si-R rear wing. I personally prefer them to Type R wings.

Oh man, what a bonus there on the rust free gas tank! I got super lucky with my old gas and the aircooled VW repair shop that took my old gas tank and scrap metal also took my old gasoline as he said they used it for cleaning parts (I mentioned it in the video but just in case). We literally poured it into a metal oil bucket with no lid and he was happy to have it. haha. Maybe you'll get lucky if you ask at a smaller shop like that or at least hopefully they'll be able to point you in the right direction. The throwing stuff away struggle is the real Japan. haha Broken stud sounds no fun. I have mixed experience with extractors so I'm crossing my fingers for you. If nothing else, at least the manifolds pop up for sale from time to time used so plan B is always there. And not a spoiler. Hopefully what's inside increases performance at the track. :)

I’ve thought about replacing the rubber hydraulic lines on my 94 GSR. Just never gotten around to it. They’re all still original at 29 years old and 382,000 miles.

Oh nice, that's a good testament to their quality.💪💪 I only did this and the brake lines since I had the entire system apart both times...and I figured knowing my luck some mouse or something chewed on one of them when it was sitting all those years. 😆

For a dual use car, I think it hits the sweet spot of being comfortable on the street but still fun to drive on track (or that's the hope anyway). And while the Type R is definitely more desirable, in Japan the sir-G seems to be much more rare which is kind of neat...however it made some parts wayyyy harder to find when bringing this thing back to life. I would like to drive them both back to back to experience the difference.

Haha, thank you! There are lots of these little jobs around the car that will definitely save you money if you do them yourself. Clutch replacement, timing belt replacement, etc are kind of the jobs where maybe paying someone might make more sense if you don't have the tools, space, or experience.

Haha, my pockets ain't deep like that, DP! 😂 And that's what I always thought about Goodridge which is why it baffles me that they're so cheap in Japan. Quality seemed really good on it!

That's such a win! I know you were worried about the clutch itself before. Also super weird to hear Goodridge being referred to as "budget" lol. But I guess when you're in JDM land this is the case. Excited for the next installment on this amazing transformation!

No doubt. I mean the clutch is still a mystery but I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it. But yeah, I'm surprised as well that Goodridge is so cheap. It must have been 10 years ago now when I bought the brake lines for my S13 and at that time too I remember being surprised it was the cheapest set of lines I could find. Hopefully Goodridge in Japan is legit and not some Alibaba knockoffs or something. haha

@@BRICKHOUSESPL I doubt it, the logo "looks right" and so does the quality. We made up our own lines in SA because Goodridge was too expensive lol.

When I did this last summer I thought it was gonna be a quick job but the hardlines were seized to the fittings and just twisting so I had to rip out and replace the hard line with a braided one. I also had the same kinda rust around the firewall hole. I think that's just standard for them once they get old they leak at the seal there.

That makes me feel better about the firewall. I was really expecting some more drama with the hardlines like that but this car must have lived it's life in a fairly salt free/not rust prone area as I've had pretty good luck with hardware on it, luckily. Being from the Midwest, I definitely know the pain and frustration of RUSTY EVERYTHING!

Hahaha, I see some pics of UK cars and it gives me nightmares. It's wild how bad stuff rusts there. So frustrating and a huge waste of time fixing the rusty stuff versus what actually needs fixing. I always expect a lot more rust related headaches being from the Midwest. Definitely don't miss it! And yeah, January was a super busy start to the year for Nerd Gold - hoping it keeps rolling! That means more content for the channel!

I literally just did this exact job in my EG, had the clutch master go on me last week so I decided to do the slave too. Have the clutch, rear main and oil pan gasket to do next, its all still original stuff by the look of it too hahaha Did you sort the VTEC thing Steve? Was it the Solenoid? Oh good youre doing the Trailing Arm Bushings, did you go with the Hardrace ones?

Oh nice. They just crap out and die when they go. I've had like three slave cylinders die on different cars over the years, so this time around I was just like heck with it, I'll start fresh. Haven't explored VTEC yet. It's on the to-do list but I haven't really been driving the car all that much as I was waiting to get these last issues resolved. I got really scared of it leaving me stranded after the dead distributor. haha But I don't really need it day to day, either. And I'll leave you in suspense on the trailing arm bushings...but not Hardrace. hehe. More JDM.

I go HardRace here in Australia because of JDMYARD (the distributor here) you'd know their Time Attack EG that they built a few years ago, won Open class here at Eastern Creek then went to Tskuba and ran in the 58's. Great Company to work with, the absolute go to for high end Honda's in Australia

Ohhh, that sounds like a good video idea. I'll put it on the list! I don't know of one overall site with everything but this one lists a lot of the main show type events: dupcar-event.com/. It's not updated a full year in advance so you need to check back from time to time and see it's been updated. I would say it's maybe updated 2-3 months ahead of time, but it has been helpful on keeping an eye on what's coming up.

You should upgrade the intake manifold with a oem type R one even the exhaust manifold as well

The p73 manifold will not bolt on to a p72 cylinder head. He would need to use a PR3 cylinder head to make that work or a Skunk 2 Manifold.

That was one of the first things I looked up when I bought the car! Haha. But yeah, like John said unfortunately it's all different. Header, Skunk2 manifold, ITR cams, and a tune maybe some day but it's pretty small against for the money so logging more seat time is the goal for now.

Yeah, I was surprised they were totally different heads. Like so much extra work/cost for Honda to make things that are close to the same but completely different. Which is also pretty neat when you think about it, the Type R really is special.

How's the handling and balance for this car? I'm planning to get 1 DC2 siR too well because the price tag for a Type R just ridiculous, now doing some research and data gathering before actually buy one.

I haven't really driven it in anger so I can't comment on overall performance. I kind of always figured they're like 80% of a Type R since the chassis and a lot of components are different from a Type R. The biggest or most noticeable shortcoming will be the gearing and lack of LSD. A Type R trans swap cures those problems and then the power difference isn't but like 10-15hp. An ITR chassis is stiffer but I'm sure a cage in a SiR/GSR will nearly result in the same feel. Buying parts for a GSR in America is likely easier than an ITR (even though most is interchangeable) but I noticed when restoring my SiR-G that it would have been easier to have an ITR in terms of finding parts (used and new). I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. Whatever fits your needs, goals, and budget is a great starting point.

@@BRICKHOUSESPL I see, me myself kind of a track junkies so if I really bought a DC2 si, definitely bringing it to local racetrack. As for the chassis stiff, where I'm from it is illegal to have a roll cage installed into your street legal car so I think couple of anti row, strut, X and room bar might do the tricks.

@@willtee3640 exactly, some good bolt on bracing will go a long ways, I think. And I had the same feeling about track use in an ITR - with values being what they are, the fear of crashing might take away some of the enjoyment.

Not to mention if you want to K-swap or turbo down the road; a non-ITR makes more sense in terms of car value.

What do you run for a camera setup?

Camera is a Sony ZV-1; new a few years ago. Mics are either Rode Video Micro for the shotgun mic (what I use most often when working on the car or shooting cars on track) or Rode Wireless Go II lav mic (walking around events or interviews). I shoot a lot with Active stabilization on and just try not to shake the camera all about when shooting. Editing out dizzying parts and trying to be steady go a long way in making a "cheap setup" look decent. Any new smartphone likely achieves a similar or better result (without some of the zoom abilities). And I monitor sound levels when editing. If you have any other specific questions feel free to ask!

@@GabeWilliams5 thanks. And yeah, best not to overthink it. Start with what you have and upgrade as you go. I'm half tempted to go to a smartphone as the main "camera" because it's so easy to always have on you. I added mics as I realized where it would improve the video. 2021 7's day video is a good example of just using the onboard mic versus this year and using the mic.
