Decades ago I was a trained bricklayer in the US, but found an easier way to make money by selling products. The way I was trained, is the way they do it in the UK, where you have a big trowel and spread the mud in long swaths. I was taught to spread the mud the perfect height so that there was no tapping, only pressing slightly, then the excess that was squeezed out was used to butter the head joint on the brick you just laid. I could see where the German method would be better, because with the small trowel you are not lifting as much weight and getting your arm worn out. Putting the mud in the bucket to keep it from drying out is another good idea. It also saves time of having to put water on the mud board and constantly re hydrating the dried out mortar.

When I was in my early 20's I worked in Bremen Germany with 3 other lads all from the uk. We were building houses. One Saturday 3 Dutch guys turned up they took the outside wall of one elevation whilst we were on the adjacent elevation. They used this method and they creamed us. They were finished an hour before us. Since then I've been using this method. Too much time waisted spreading muck the whole length. I've proved the point over and over to other lads, yet they still insist on spreading the whole length lol.

Glenn you and me would have got on well I'm 65, you are spot on when you say about using a smaller trowel, you have much more control and it took me a while to realize this. I was working with a chap on the line for the first time and I remember thinking that's a small trowel you've got there, well I've never seen a bloke lay bricks as fast and neat he was using your method. The other blokes said don't be embarrassed he does it to all of us. Anyway I really enjoyed the video and the humour keep it up....

Ben Croft kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdCofZtyvbychqc.html when your doing your next private job try using the tubs and a smaller trowel you’ll go even faster . Very relaxed way of bricklaying . Note the Dutch guy nearest you in the video how relaxed he is . He’s holding the trowel in a very relaxed manner not choking it. The brick they are laying are 50 mm high that’s why they can use the push joint . The trowel he is using is an Arnhem trowel .

The having materials all up higher part has really opened my eyes! Although I will say you really *shouldn't* be tapping the bricks down anyway until you start getting around about chest height. The bed should be laid so that you can gently push the brick home with your finger tips, as you're doing here. If you're doing a load of taps on every brick at every height you are kinda doing it wrong.
@hotdog79882 жыл бұрын

Love your work, thanks for the advice, I will take it on board. In our country down under on sites they do not drink alcohol while working. It's against the law, customers have noticed a few crooked walls. It would not be a good time to get tipsy. What if brick layers are on high rise buildings? Could this be a risk? I don't drink- I dare say that's a good thing. Therefore I rest my case.

I was a top level bricklayer qualified in 1976 after an almost 4 year apprenticeship and could lay an average of 650 bricks a day laying bricks the conventional way. building a standard building with no internal corners. doing my own very neat pointing {much neater than you see here.} that's 93 bricks an hour over 7 hours of work. 23 bricks in 15 mins including building corners. Glen has some good points in what he says, but having bricks up that high and working out of a bucket has some advantages and some disadvantages. at the end of the day I think I would of laid as many if not more bricks than Glen did. I did have my spots on two concrete blocks to save on the bending down, but sorry no way is laying mortar for one brick quicker than laying for a few at a time.

The frog was invented to save on materials and weight , A modern brick has discrepancies in size during manufacture and when on site , if you need to “grind”down due to size issues ( especially when tying into original brickwork then there is necessity to “frog” them . Bricks are normally used for their compressive strength so regardless if the brick is frog up or frog down the unit is the same , and as mortar in building is designed to be weaker than the bricks used ( to absorb any later movement and not crack the brickwork) it makes no difference if the frog is completely filled . If frogs were the deciding factor in a bricks strength why do we have class A engineering bricks which don’t have a frog and are used for high strength brickwork ? www.masonryconstruction.com/how-to/frogs-up-or-down_o

I do masonry in Canada from Poland and have alot Germans in my crew we all got a could laugh. The pale was great, and the beer with a blazer. The motarboar is wetted ti start and if your motar is dring up thats because your working too fuck slow. When you pull moater off the boar the motar rolls into a bun like ready to spread evenly no need to frey it afterward, and you dont break your wrist. And dont work backwards if you dont have to it dangoures, you dont see the criss joint as well.
