This is our way we find best to mix a mortar mix for bricklaying. There are many different ratios to mix mortar so its best to check with the an engineer architect or a qualified bricklayer.
Hope this guide of a standard mix helps you.

The side by side comparison for consistency of the mortar and the separation of an undermixed mix is the best I've seen on you tube. I'm a diyer and you have just corrected something I've been doing wrong for years. Thank you for your in depth videos. Much appreciated

Great video, a month or 2 before Xmas 2022 I started to help a mate who needed a labourer for 2 weeks, it’s now nearly the end of May and those 2 weeks still haven’t ended, I’m a spring chicken aged 37 and never laboured for a builder and every day is a school day haha love watching videos as helpful as this one just to make sure I keep my ‘skills’ on top form, at the end of the day it’s my job to make his job easier, love working my arse off for the first couple of hours so I can get in front of him then I can spend the rest of the day being in front and having him loaded with bricks/flags etc and taking it steady haha

Hiya, a really useful vid. I need to relay my patio steps as the slabs came loose, thought I'd mix by hand in a wheelbarrow and having tried that today I realised that's nuts! Lol So as it'll be the first time using a mixer, I wanted to ask if the time for mixing 10-15 minutes does that depend on how much you're mixing? I'll probably start with counting shovel loads. Thanks. 👍🏼

Im building my house in south west of ireland. My block layer was finishing gables on sunday. He had a different young fella with him this time and he blocked approx 100 blocks in the rain and the mortar now looks abit sandy and you can scrape it back with a nail altough it seems still fairly set. Do you think i should get him to rip to 100 blocks down and do it again, iv a feeling it wasnt mixed great anyway and aswel as that the rain washed the cement out of it. I presume there still would be no fear of it

some good tips👍 a question about sand. your sand is damp, does the quantity vary if it is dry, like powder. I ask because the bag of sand left in my garage has fully dried out, no moisture in it at all, so do I have to adjust the quantity of sand to suit? or should I add water to the sand first to dampen it before I gauge it and add to the cement for a mortar mix?
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping

Disc it out as deep as a mini disc cutter will go. Hose down all the bricks and joints .Allow to dry .damp joint and re point with mortar and bush the mortar in to the joint with a jointing bar or trowel. Good luck 👍

How much water was in the mixer at the beginning for that full mix please? What's the smallest mix you can make in there? Is 1 bucket of sand not enough for some reason?

They said they price match Bradfords building supplies £430 and then I get extra 10% off with trade card on top. Thats £387 brand new. Currently paddle mixing in a bucket and not getting it as good. Have to add to much water in the beginning make a slurry then pour that into a bucket and add more sand cement to brink it back. Still takes 10 - 15 mins and not as good.

OPC Why? Why not motar mix that has lime in it? Does the plasticiser have a retarder in it? I noticed your old mix had not begun to set. I could see using OPC for concrete block, but looks like normal clay bricks and why not normal motar mix? What is the temperature there, looks a bit cool with all the heavy clothes. Is the temperature affecting the set time?

Opc is a common cement to mix mortar or concrete thats why its used . You can add lime to the mix if you want to or instructed by the architect. The plastizer has no retardant in it. Yep the temperature here in wales at that time was cold and wet 👍
