Nice job. Whilst it’s true that a geo textile membrane is a separation membrane it’s better laid between the sub base and the base thereby preventing the sub base from sinking into the sub soil. It provides structural integrity and is a real upgrade. The notion that any normal weed could penetrate the sand and come through the gaps in the pavers is a common misconception. Weeds between pavers come from scattered weed seeds from above. Some use membrane to prevent the sand from migrating to the sub base but this problem is prevented by blinding a thin layer of sand onto the sub base and going over with the whacker.
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping 2 жыл бұрын
Spot on David it stops the base mixing with the underlying areas thus preventing separation. Its not needed on most applications in the uk as long as the relevant layers that make up the base are achieved. Its a good addition on a slope or on certain types of ground to reduce separation. Good points and great post thanks David 👍

Very nice job , good to see true tradesmen with pride in their work , I’ve been laying block paving for nearly 40 years, and now retiring , after a lot of time listening to people saying how it should be done , I realised that weeds only grow in the gaps in earth between the blocks, they do not grow from the earth below the blocks , I’ve installed with and without the membrane barrier fabric , there is absolutely no difference after a time weeds grow between the joints , resanding and wacking again , and block sealer won’t stop the weeds, after a time they will be back , it’s a good earner though telling customers it needs resanding and wacking again, the best way and cheapest and effective way to make it look like new again is a good power was , the strong weed killer , will keep it looking good for much longer

Hi Guys, one of the most helpful videos I've watched to date. I have a question..... I have to lay a pathway that is not up against any walls or edges on either side and I plan to type 1, lay a weed membrane, add 20mm of sand compacted leaving 20mm of sand to screed plus 50mm block paver. As I intend to whacker the finished blocks into this second course layer of screeded sand I will actually screed to 40mm below finished level. Now my question.... How do I stop the edges on both sides splaying out from the whacker plate? I don't see as I should cement them in backed up and then whacker the middle down as this may cause disruption to the cement edging, do i put them in, whacker down and then remove block and sand and re fit with a new cement base and backing up? Your help and advise would be greatly appreciated. Regards
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping 16 күн бұрын
Thanks Peter I'd suggest if you haven't any existing solid edge to work to . Then you have to install a path edging set in concrete to retain the paving . We do have other videos on driveways in the driveway playlist if that helps you. Good luck 👍

@brickrightbuildinglandscaping
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping 2 жыл бұрын
Craig find your finished level either end of the drive. Run a string line from both these points nice and tight . The sand should already be compacted now add your screed rail into the sand and use a block paver to sit on top of screeder so that your paver touches the line do this say every 1m and you'll end up with a nice straight line matching the levels you want to work to. The falls If you have a good fall by doing the above great if not you can angle it the opposite way but may need aco drains etc to accommodate this . Hope you understand this mate good luck .if not give me a ring . Justin 👍

We got an estimate of 6,000 dollars to reset our 850 sq ft driveway. Which is way out of our range. We are considering doing a repair of the top 8 ft or so to prevent water pooling and ease of getting the car in the garage. This area has sunk about 6 inches over 20 years. Would you recommend such a course of action? We are in northern Canada. Thanks.

Hi to all in Canada 🇨🇦 If you lift up the defective area of paving. Then add a new section of base and compact it with a wacker plate.Has to be the right levels. Then re lay the paving wack when finished and add kiln dry sand to joints. Its all about getting the right level to re do the base. Hope that helps you out good luck with it . Justin 👍 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇨🇦

I need to do this and just fear it'll 'creep' out of alignment as I progress down the driveway. I've just done a shed base and despite my best efforts I didn't manage to keep it square (it's OK - hidden under the shed). I tried putting the wacker-plate thing over the sand as well as the stone sub material but I'm not sure it achieved anything. Would it be better if the sand was wet? Surprised you can just lay blocks on sand like that and still be able to drive a car over it without it sinking. Thanks for the video.

Hi Paul Sand should be around 40 to 50 mm thick . The battens are 38 mm thick. You will have a small.amount of sand left under your battens this is right otherwise you will dig into your mot base .hope thats of help any issue ring me tomorrow mate 👍

@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping hi I’m a very newbie to this game at 72. When you say 4:1 sharp sand mix, what do you mix with it? Then is it wacked? And what is the slurry you put on the back of the blocks and why?
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping
@brickrightbuildinglandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikescott9212 Mike not sure what you mean with the questions there sorry. Sharp sand 4 parts and cement 1 part is used with water and a plastersier to mix the mortar. The slurry to paint on the back of the slabs is a paving slurry we use pave tuff paving slurry .it helps bond the porcelain to the mortar to stop de lamination. Hope that helps you Mike Justin 👍

No need for that rubber hammer what you should be doing is get of your knees and every five or so row laid get a straight edge and put it against leading edge and check for alignment and tap brick back with straight edge or push to paving units where needed to straight edge and on a bigger job you would use a string line for alignment but you definitely could do with learning how to screed properly as its quicker and accurate and only need aluminium screeds and the knowledge of how to screed as its not just pulling aluminium screeds over sand freehand and hoping for the best there is a process 👍

More than happy to learn mate no issue with that .ive always done it like this on drives .i guess for big areas the process is different out on site . Thanks again 👍

@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping if you use metal screed bars you can simply pull them forward for next pull.Probs do the same with timber batons to do it without screed rails you still have to form a dry screed on both sides anyway and pull of them just stick to rails n freehand when need to roll screed in.just do it the way that suits you best Justin Cheers Tim

All of a sudden, everyone seems to hire equipment and starts up a business as block drive/paving specialist. Having spent over 20 years as a civil engineer, videos like this are so misleading. Tip, screed out, block in. I have come across of many people asking for quotes then have the job completed by others, only to be asked if we can repair the first job. Its costs double as we have to first take out the other companies workmanship before the repair. Always get someone who is accredited and approved by your local council, get quotes from many and if possible watch how their work. We did one job in a wealthy area which should have taken 2 weeks. We ended up spending 3 months in the same road doing their neighbours. 3 of which the quotes where less than ours.

Yes unfortunately this does happen Paul and i agree with much of what you are saying .we are accredited by marshalls and this drive was inspection by a marshalls inspector and passed.Yes get a few quotes etc do your homework if your a consumer i definitely encourage that. Question though how is the video misleading? Justin 👍

No need for weed membrane as weeds germinate in kiln dried sand and root goes down and leaf grows up never in a million years would a weed grow through 200mm of hardcore a layer of sand and then paving joints so that's silly only time you use different types of membrane is if you have bad ground or are doing permeable paving and need to separate layers to allow them to keep free draining also no need for screed rails they are for DIY homeowners or people who cannot screed in Ireland you would get laughed at if you pulled them rails out unless you where screeding by machine, also when them lads are pulling the board of them silly rails the sand does not look as its been compacted first by a whacker plate which would not be good but definitely lovely weather 👍
