+Paul Greener If you were to level the face side margin you will cause the bricks to tip (grin and hatching) best practice is to level the middle of the bricks then pull the level to the face side margin to double check making sure no brick are riding up, halfs batts often do this and should be checked. Silly Americans, they say if the frog is laid up it can retain water, which may contribute to early brick deterioration. Don't know if they have looked at the make up of a brick becuase to me the clay brick will dry out pretty damn quick even in the littlest of sun. Take it from the boys in the UK they have a lot much more rain then you do and have been laying frog up of since the beginning. +Paul Greener Hi Paul thanks for you comments, I don't think you will find many bricklayers on site who don't hit their levels with their trowel handles. Im not sure why your commenting on hitting it with the blade as this doesn't happen in this video! Also not sure why you are commenting on the type level being used! The video is on the bricklaying sequence. Incase you are interest Stabila levels have patents which means all other levels are inferior, I personally use a Stabila 96-2. What bad habbits are you on about?

every level is reversible Paul 96-2 is a very good tool for the job, I use a stabila 196 and love it. Tapping a level with the handle of a trowel is common practice, "TAPPING" been the word..... Beating the crap out of it on muck going off is another which I have also seen on site and would not do. Good mortar, nice clean mortar bed bricks planted well, a light tap on the level is all thats needed which is what Eddie did. And as he says, (not in this video) its quicker and more accurate. Tapping each brick in turn means your up and down all the bricks tap tap taping to get them level and thats a fact!

I go to this college. U don't get to use these new bricks only level 3 do. , I'm level 1 so we have to use some crusty ass bricks

+Paul Greener Are you aware of the purpose of the frog? Students need to be taught how bricks are laid on site and in the south of England bricks being laid on site almost always have a frog?

Gamer 26 I’m not going to try and pretend it’s something it’s not, me personally I enjoy it, it’s physical, hard, you achieve something and it pays well. The construction skills course you will do will be good as you will get a taste for each area, hopefully in year two they will let you do your chosen trade full time. Best way to learn is apprenticeship so after year 1 or 2 you should be looking to do this. You will find it boring at times that normal and not many will go on from your class and become good tradesmen. Keep your attendance high, go to maths and English if you need to and work harder than you knew you could. The more effort you put in the more you will get out of it. Good luck don’t let yourself get bored, remember there is always something to do

Edward Williams thank you for replying. Your info will help me. Do you have to be good at bricklaying or can you be bad at it. I always panic that when I start next week i would be terrible at it and others would be fantastic at it.

Gamer 26 you can be terrible to start with mate doesn’t matter at, is hard but don’t worry yourself with what the others are doing or compare yourself to them. Set yourself up well nice and neat get all your bricks ready before you start laying. Give yourself space between your board and wall. If your teacher is no good use my videos as they will teach you all the basics. Any questions once you start just ask us on here 👍

Alex Thorbrand hi Alex that's a hard question to answer, I won't lie to you bricklaying is hard work and it self regulates its self by if your not good enough you earn less money or will be laid off. Yes it's possible but depends on the individual. What industry are you moving from? Bricklaying is highly skilled, apprentices serve 4 years to get full level 3 qualification even then will depend on their skill level and speed how much they earn.

Well i'm one of those people who has moved from job to job, office work, warehouse work, bit of private building related stuff but, not as a skilled person, more of a 'here mate can you hold this plaster board up while i nail it in' kind of thing whilst helping out my mate who is a skilled builder. Recently I started labouring through an agency on proper sites and seeing all the tradespeople and watching them work with their skills made me think I wish I had learned a proper trade when I was a lot younger. What you're saying with brick laying is, you really have to want to do it and be very dedicated, i imagine that clients also expect a certain quota of work to be undertaken in a day, considering a good brick layer can earn £180 + a day you'd need to be pretty confident you can meet their demand. 4 years is a good long time it's basically like doing a university degree.

Alex Thorbrand exactly that mate, you got to be putting down 200 plus blocks a day or 500 odd bricks. Could try labouring for some bricklaying company and try to get on the trowel once your on top. Look around local colleges or training centres see if anywhere is doing part time courses. Don't be fooled thought its ability that earns good money not qualifications

Hi Alex, I was 42 when I started laying. It can be done if thats what ya want to do but as Eddie says it is hard work. I did it the hard way and started with a price gang, i would say start with day work if ya can the lads will be more willing to stop and teach you. brick on dude lol

brian o'reilly yes you are entitled you an opinion, but now you have lost all credibility by saying you don't tap the level with your trowel, all us modern bricklayers do it and stibila even have a mason level with pads on to be hit.

brian o'reilly your first sentence doesn't make sense! 1960s house were built frog down, no insulation or expansion joints, internal walls not tied in adequately and are only still up because of the beauty of bricks. Bricklaying has been de-skilled compared to what you would have learnt but it has also evolved. I feather in different ways for different situation, please look at my video on mortar spread and comment. We all hit the level actually applys even pressure which is better. If you could comment on my positioning, too many movements and inaccurate technical information then you would have cause to write negatively.
