BRICS: How an acronym from Goldman Sachs morphed into a strategic economic bloc

BRICS - meaning Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - is widely regarded as the pillar of emerging economies. And other countries want in.
The BRICS economic bloc is made up of five of the world’s biggest emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The acronym started as “BRIC” in 2001, when Goldman Sach’s then-chief economist Jim O’Neill predicted that the economic weight of Brazil, Russia, India and China could eclipse the world’s biggest economies in the next decade.
A decade passed, and that didn’t happen. But leaders of BRIC nations did hold their first official summit in Russia in 2010, with South Africa joining the group a year later. Since then, they have met regularly to discuss cooperation on global issues.
One of the group’s major achievements was the establishment of the New Development Bank, set up in 2015 by the BRICS countries to support infrastructure and development projects in BRICS and other developing countries.
Over recent months, BRICS has generated buzz partly due to other emerging markets expressing interest in joining the bloc. Argentina and Iran have submitted applications to join, while countries like Indonesia were named as potential new members.
In the wake of Russia, a key BRICS member, waging war on another sovereign state, how will BRICS move forward in the future? Watch the video above to learn more about the positioning of BRICS in the global order.

When India and China setting aside their minor conflicts, looking for mutual interest, stability in the Asia Pacific region will be ensured. Both India, China and all ASEAN countries will get the benefit. When these two nations, accounted for 35% of the population stood together it would be very difficult for United States and or any western countries to create tension in the region.

As an American, I agree with you. Every country has the rich exploiting the poor and arranging the economy, the laws, the education to maintain things or make them more profitable for the rich. My family members all earned college degrees but it didn't help much. Still working class, as my parents and grandparents. As a nurse, I thought it would be better, but still ended up working 2 jobs and more. If other countries can improve things by banding together, more power to you. But my first comment stands. China is a mess and may door harm than good to its "partners".

Your first and biggest mistake is to assume any foreign country would do things that would be beneficial to Brazil. The change has to be self driven and internal. Otherwise the world is pretty much a Hyena's breeding ground looking for Carcasses (weaknesses) of others. Don't ever assume any other country would care about one's own nation as you do and this applies to all countries.

Hopefully the BRICS framework can act as a pacifier for these nations much in the way the EU does for Europe. Today Poland is demanding 1.3 trillion Euros in reparations for WW2 yet the EU goes on. Finally the idea of a member state in conflict being a problem is a non issue as the US has been in numerous wars and or military invasions and it has never been an issue within the G7. Absolutely. Unlike G7 which started as G4 in 1973 (or G3.5 as it's only West Germany), BRICS didn't start out on a more solid foundation. It will likely take a longer time for BRICS (or E5) to grow more synergistically before they become a true rival of G7. Alternatively, the G7 could make some serious mistakes & allow E5 to get ahead.

The BRICS countries are becoming prosperous thanks to the ingenuity and the hard work of their people, and to peaceful trade and cooperation with other countries. In the process, they are helping the other countries to become prosperous also. By contrast, the G7 countries became rich, not because their people were smarter or more hardworking than the people of other countries, but because they used brute force to steal the wealth of other countries. In the process, they killed hundreds of million people in other countries, they destroyed the livelihoods of the people in other countries, and they caused the impoverishment of other countries.

Just wait until Middle East nations, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentine, Chile, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Philippines and North African nations to join BRICS to form the Power of Future League, PFL, replacing the corrupted colonialist controlled UN. There will be a new gold/silver based BRICS currency as world trade standard. EU is at its last breath while US, Canada, Japan, S Korea and Aussies are isolated to operate in the Pacific Rim. Euro and USD will not be the main global currencies. A new era of global trades will emerge by 2030. 😎

Thank you for this excellent analysis and report on the BRICS and the way it is influencing global affairs. The strength of the BRICS+ movement is its emphasis on partnership and development, as distinct from an Anglo/ American led emphasis on alliances and security. BRICS is coming from a position of strength and growth, whereas the G7 is coming from a position of weakness and decline.
@a.k.1960

Where is the strength? South Africa and Brazil have their own problems. India will not believe China. Russia cannot influence China. China alone cannot convince everyone. BRICKS is just an eye wash to arm twist the west when it was started but now with Chinese bullying, India is firmly in the western camp and BRICKS has lost its relevance with three reluctant parties, India, Brazil, South Africa.

BRICS is a bunch of cheap labor countrys. the only reason they are developing is because they provide cheap labor. in china they are as i am typing this, beating people for not wanting to be trapped inside a manufacturing plant making iphones because "cov-id". that's not a movement i want to be involved with. what i would like to see is BRICS come together and leave america completely alone in every sense of the word. i want BRICS to trade fight partner everything without america. not buying cheap garbage goods or getting cheap crappy customer support would my dream come true. americans are craftsman of quality, and i would love to see quality items be brough back to the market. i would also love to be left alone and not fight others wars or hand out free money to others that myself and generations after me will have to pay back. i think BRICS is a great idea. i am not sure which country will provide the cheap labor so the others can be well off, but I am sure one of them will take a hit for the team.

CCP is the biggest road block in the success of BRICS. There policy of expanding borders in neighbouring countries will never let build the trust which is important for meaningful partnership. Otherwise this group will be just another get together of eastern countries. I hope Chinese change their policies.

India & China had great civilisations & trading relationships for centuries whilst in Europe they were still scratching around in caves trying to invent fire.
