Welcome to Pennsylvania. For years I had business in that area and have been to the bridge many times, back when the steam trains were still offering excursions. It was a long and exhilarating walk across the bridge. FYI, if you get to Bradford, PA, also in McKean County, the Zippo factory and museum are well worth a tour. The Zippo WW2 exhibit is very impressive.

I just found your channel tonight and started with your overnight stay in the abandon lodge with below 0 temps. Now I have watched about 5 of your videos. Great content, I love it. You might want to check out some videos on here of when the excursion trains were still using the viaduct. The small concrete structure you showed at about 4 min in was a phone booth. In the pre radio days trains would have to check in with the dispatcher to find out if they were going to meet a train from the opposite direction and where to take a siding. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

I thought it looked familiar for some reason... Agreed, though, this is a much better look at the site - it feels more visceral and personal with the handheld camera at ground level than the sanitized and professional drone shots that MotA does.

@@sackettfamily4685 It's the girl that can be seen in some of post's videos. We call her ghost 10 for a few reasons. It's sort of a portmanteau of girl + post, he doesn't acknowledge that she's there, and especially in abandoned places when post says something like "there's nobody here", and you see her in the distance. I've seen quite a few videos and documentary series about this bridge, but you went the extra steps and brought us in from the back side, even walking 2 miles to show us the opposite end that most people wouldn't think about, great video by both Post 10 and Ghost 10, 10 out of 10 stars, when ever you do decide to come back this way, towards Susquehanna Pennsylvania, I can get you in to the Starrucca house, it was the original train station for Susquehanna for many years, and I just happen to know the owner who would love to show you the inside that he has been remodeling back to it's original condition, got a lot of railroad history here in this town a lot of the residents are descendants of when the town was built

I got to ride the K&K steam train across this bridge a couple times in the 80's/90's. Its worth coming back to the area in the summer. In Saegertown(couple hours west of Kinzua) every July the Pioneer Steam & Gas Society puts on their big show(hit and miss engine, line shaft machine shop and sawmill ect) and with in an hour of the engine show in you have the Erie Lackawanna Railroad museum in Meadville, the Oil Creek Valley Railroad tour(Diesel pulling half a dozen prewar cars on a couple hour loop) in Titusville and the Drake Well museum also in Titusville.

Well, Post, I knew you'd get a kick out of visiting this. Imagine my surprise....I suggested a trip to the Kinzua Bridge a couple days ago in the comments, and here, you must have had this trip planned already. It's a really cool place to visit. My S.O. and try to get up here every couple years....it's just a day trip for us, a little over 2 hours away. We never get tired of it. When the trestle was first built in the 1880's it was considered one of the engineering wonders of the world. What was really amazing was that it went up in just 94 days. That was Kinzua Creek you crossed. It flows down to the Allegheny River...actually, I think it flows into the Allegheny Reservoir, behind the Kinzua Dam. You should have been there a couple weeks ago...the leafs were magnificent. I'm going to guess Ghost 10 enjoyed the visit as well.

Just thought you should know, the bridge was never being converted to a bike trail. Until the tornado hit, it still was used to run trains over it, that was why they where restoring it. As for the cat walk you see on both sides was for pedestrians The railroad that ran on the bridge was the Kane And Knox. railroad out of Kane Pa, Since the destruction of the bridge the railroad has gone bankrupt.

My friends and I went out there in 1996 and fortunately took dozens of photos. We took a photo of ourselves with a camera on a tripod at the top of the trestle. My one friend was scared of heights and just as the shutter clicked, a gust of wind knocked the camera over. Got a great shot of my nervous friend and I in mid-scream. If he knew then, a tornado would knock it down a few years later, he would have had a heart attack. Great to see it again.

We were there the morning after the tornado hit this. All the park employees were in total shock. We didn't realize at first what happened....then we saw the iron supports ripped up and mangled in the bottom of the valley. You could see the path of the F1 tornado that did the damage....the path of it basically bounced off of it in the middle, it didn't cross over it at all, just a glancing blow. Crazy the amount of damage from such a small tornado!

@ThomasWLalor 2 жыл бұрын
The company doing work on the bridge had neglected the anchoring bolts at several bases of the uprights, figuring no trains, just a hiking trail = no need to heavily reinforce the structure. Never expected a once-in-a-lifetime tornadic storm. I think the company went out of business, not having insurance or resources to complete repairs.

Sad it got hit by the tornado but the cost to fix it was way to much. :( It was a really nice place to visit and they had made it really nice to walk across. There's a lot of culverts and arch bridge's along that grade if you keep heading back towards Lewis Run pa. I've spent a lot of time on ATVs on that grade

The worry is that this structure was designed to take 100’s of tons of train, 300ft in the air, and some wind took it out. Spectacular structure. With abs’ no factor of safety built in ! 😎

Its a different kind of load. Just like a cinder block is strong with the holes in the vertical position, if you turn it sideways, its much weaker.

Wikipedia says the anchor bolts were rusted, and unable to resist lateral loads.

@@gordonrichardson2972 In addition to simple rusting, many of the bolts were from the original wrought iron bridge built on the same foundations 20 years earlier - not the steel used in the rest of the modern structure. When the tornado hit the towers literally just lifted clean off the foundations, fully intact until they fell and sheared from the rest of the structure. Who knows, maybe if they'd replaced those bolts with stronger ones to match the newer, heavier steel structure back in 1900 then maybe it would have survived the tornado.

Also, the bridge was originally built when trains were much lighter, less frequent, and carrying smaller loads. It also had a speed limit of 5mph, and the last train crossed it in 1959, when a cheaper, quicker, and more accessible route became available to the companies using the bridge.

Incredible what Mother Nature can do. I’ve read and seen so many things about the Kinzua Viaduct that seeing you explore this magnificent piece of engineering was heart warming. We have a tv show here in the UK called “Abandoned Engineering” and they featured this structure in one of the episodes. Nice video 👍
