thanks! i just recently realized the value of sort of saying the gist of the video up front so that people can hear that and close out if they dont want the details. and also so that they cant decide early on if they don't like the topic time is way too valuable i regret so many videos where i sort of kept the "thesis" of it hidden until the end. going forward, i'm aiming to stick to this structure =) appreciate the feedback!

Except that Dany is invading this season. Varys sailed to Westeros, back to Mereen and back to Westeros AGAIN since Cercei blew up the Sept. In real life, it would have to be AT LEAST a year since the walk of shame. Probably more. I doubt Cercei is cutting her hair since it was done to humiliate her and she's very vain. It's just them not paying enough attention to detail.

But how big will Drogon be when he is Balerion's final age? Looking at his accelerated growth I wonder if he could grow to be bigger than Balerion.
@bridge4
@bridge4 7 жыл бұрын
i was wondering the same thing. i was actually going to through a one-liner in there about it, but i ended up holding back so drogon is growing WAY faster than we would expect. all of the dragons ago (side note, when i was doing this research, i realized that viserys and rhaegal are way bigger than i realized). the only explanation i can think of is that magic has returned to the word in full force, and that might be impacting the dragons but i like where your head is at... if dragons grow at a constant pace (unconfirmed), then drogon would be the size of westeros or essos if he lives to 220 LOL) i think he will die in season 7 or 8, but regardless, it's be fun to figure out how big he would be at 220. ill do that offline and layer into the "QnA" video that i've bene procrastinating for weeks now. i tentatively plan on doing that next week tho i guess all we need is to determine how old drogon is now and then multiple his size by 220/drogons age... maybe ill do that right now. brb
@bridge4
@bridge4 7 жыл бұрын
ok i was way off lol. the wiki says he is 6 in season 7. so if his wing span is 147 feet right now (we don't know that for sure, but its gotta be around 100-160ish) and he grows at a constant rate (another unconfirmed assumption), he would be 5390 feet (little over a mile wide LOL) or 1.6 kilometers that would be sicccccck. imagine looking up lol

Except age isn't the only factor, there is also the food problem. Unless old aged drogon has small armies to eat every day his growth will come to halt or he will starve do death.
@lollol6570
@lollol6570 7 жыл бұрын
and theres also the fact that they're only taking this project to 8 seasons and I find it unlikely that Drogon will survive to the end. We're not going to see a continent sized dragon unless the spinoffs get real ambitious. I don't think the writers will have to address it but its fun to imagine.

In my honest opinion Smaug and Balerion would be a fair match because Smaug is about the same size of Balerion (I could be wrong). Smaug was estimated at 180 years old when he died, but his body was well armored and only a black arrow could penetrate it. I'm more interested in a comparison to Balerion and Ancalagon.....Ancalagon is mountain range sized and when he was defeated he crushed the three peaks of Thangorodrim and even during the battle with Earendil and Manwe's eagles it took a whole day to beat the massive dragon.
@joshuahuff607
@joshuahuff607 7 жыл бұрын
Annaliese Eaton There is no way he was 180 years old when he died. Smaug takes the lonely mountain in TA 2770 and is killed in TA 2941. That would have made him only 9 years old when he took the lonely mountain. While yes he was young, Glaurung was stated to be "young and scarce half-grown" and that was at 100 years old. There is no way Smaug was just 180 years old at his death. I'm pretty sure GRRM stated his dragons could not defeat Smaug (could be wrong though). As far as Ancalagon goes, it isn't even close.

@bridge4
@bridge4 7 жыл бұрын
i hear ya. i had to make an assumption. here's my train of thought. if the pace slows, in theory, it will eventually slow to a point where it effectively isnt growing any more, which would go aganst the theory "dragons keep growing" so i figured the only way to avoid that problem is to assume that they grow at a constant (or increasing) rate
@ktoth29
@ktoth29 7 жыл бұрын
I'd be more inclined to think their rate of growth decelerates as that is more akin to what happens in the natural world and GRRM is very careful about grounding his fantasy in science. Theoretically Crustaceans never stop growing, and while you do occasionally find a 100 year old lobster twice as big as the others, there is still a point where its rate of growth becomes imperceptible.

If the rate of growth in years 1-10 is 1x, and the rate in years 10-100 is .1x, and the rate in years 100-1000 is .01x, It is still growing, but the rate of growth is decaying at a constant, geometric rate. After 5 years the dragon will be 5x larger, after 50 years it will be 15x larger and after 500 years it will be 25x larger... my math isn't perfect but I think thats a more realistic model.

I would love to see a Balerion vs Ancalagon size comparison video! I sometimes think Ancalagon was GRRM’s inspiration for Balerion. Ancalagon the black/Balerian the black dread - even sound similar. Ancalagon was the largest dragon that ever lived in Tolkien’s middle earth! It is stated in the silmarillion that when he was struck down from the sky, his mass destroyed 3 whole mountains!

thanks, Robin! yeah, this one took me an extra day from what i had planned in my schedule. i don't really know how to use the zoom in/out feauture properly yet (or it's flawed), because every time i made an edit, everything further on in the video would get distorted lol sometimes, i get REALLY frusterated when the editing gets messed up, or the software starts freezing but the good thing about this video was that i used pictures and the software as part of the "research" section of this project. i used it to determine how much i had to increase sizes to match the other dragons. so by the time i got to doing the video, i had all the pictures already in the timeline was kind of a bummer having to go to bed last night without completing it, but at that point, i at least had all the pictures and everyting in order. so this morning/afternoon was just a cleanup job. and while im doing it, i was starting at balerion and drogon the entire time, so that was pretty cool =) anyway, really appreciate the feedback. very kind of you!

+Felix Barclay are u asking for a confirm on his age or are u implying how it's wild how fast he is growing? I'll have to get back to you on the former. The only explanation I can think of for the latter is thatdragons are related to magic. And right now, magic has come back to the world in a very powerful way, which may explain why he is growing so quickly Imagine he lives to be 220 and grows at a constant rate. He would be the size of western and essos combined! Lol But I have a bad feeling that all the dragons, and magic as a whole, will seemingly "die." Not forever... but for all intents ans purposes (it might resurface in hundreds or thousands of hears..) sad if true tho...I think that's a big part of the "bittersweet ending" What dO u think? Will any of the dragons live to see the closing credits of season 8?

bridge4 That does make sense that they are bigger and stronger due to magic because it really does seem like magic is coming back to the world. It reminds me of how the Warlock dude in the House of the Undying said that his own powers were stronger than ever before when the dragons were near and that's why he wanted to keep them chained up there with Dany who made them even stronger. And just the fact that they were the first dragons to hatch in hundreds of years shows that magic is some factor. Then obviously with the White Walkers coming out of their sleep and even the fact that Bran was born as a Warg and a Green Seer(which were things usually only Wildlings North of the Wall had). So it's not too crazy to me that this magic is causing the Dragons to grow extremely fast in the ~6 years they have been around.
@TheaTheGenius
@TheaTheGenius 7 жыл бұрын
Felix Barclay they're around 4 or 5. Their growth rate has been massively excelerated by D&D to move things along, otherwise, Dany would have to wait around 8-10 years before her dragons grew to the right size. The justification for this is that the dragons (Drogon at least) had freedom and hunted regularly, hence his excelerated growth rate. In the lore, it is clearly stated that Dragonstone dragons pre Aegon's conquest grew to be larger and stronger than those raised in the Red Keep, because the Targs didn't chain them up, instead, they let them roam free and nest at the Dragonmonth. So freedom, excercise and plenty of food seem to be the trigger. That and the magic and WW. Dragons growing is probably also triggered by the Night King rising, since ice and fire are two opposing forces that need to be equal to properly each other. Anyway, that's just my take :)

I have a theory about the fate of Drogon which I want to share here. Basically in GoT, there are lots of foreshadowing before events take place. If you apply the same to Drogon, what do you get? Drogon was named after Khal Drogo; who died and was brought back to "life" by the witch. Could this be foreshadowing? The same thing will also happen to Drogon? As in, maybe Drogon will die in season 7, and get raised back to life by the Night King; who then rides him! There are rumours spreading that it is likely the Night King would commandeer a dragon in season 7 or 8. If anything, the foreshadowing through Khal Drogo is a strong evidence for it.

+Hair 2U did kahl drogo die and come back to life? I thought he just got injured,went semi comatose, then dany killed him...

I guess the show no longer follows the foreshadowing trend that earlier seasons had ever since it got ahead of the books. Or it just means that the three dragon riders theory is more important than the foreshadowing of Khal Drogo. This means that the three dragon riders to fulfill the prophecy will be Dany, Jon, and Night King.

hey Max. do you have any particular ideas you'd want discussed? one idea is to compare ASOIAF dragons to other famous dragons like Smaug. but i'm going to hold off on that for a few weeks, because i want to get feedback on this analysis in case i'm way of. i don't want to compare Game of Thrones dragons to others until I feel confident in how big these guys/girls are i also want to do an ice dragon video at some point. i don't want to do a "click bait" type video though. i have ideas on exploring ice dragons based on what we know from lore and other works by GRRM, but i'm just hesitant, because it seems like one of those topics where, no matter what i say, [people are going to flood the comment section with mean stuff oh i got another idea. i need to brainstorm this more, but one of the biggest questions about the world is magic (arising, growing, dying, etc). so that could be a cool one. debating whether dragons bring the magic, or whether dragons are born when magic returns... let me know if you have any other ideas. thanks!

Personally I would love it if you could try to estimate the rate at which Drogon is growing and estimate how large he might be by the end of the show. Obviously it would require a lot of assumptions but it would still be interesting.
@bridge4
@bridge4 7 жыл бұрын
hey Drew. so today im going to read all the feedback and try to do an updated on this video. so it will focus mainly on a better ending estimate at balerion at his time of death. but i like your idea. im definitely trying to get a little better with the "rate of growth" assumption (based off mass instead of wingspan), so ill try ending the video with estimate for drogon for 1yr, 2yr, 5yr, and 10 yr good idea, thanks!
@acedragon1456

One way to tell if the dragons grow at a constant rate would be to analyse their size in every season.
@Aethuviel
@Aethuviel 6 жыл бұрын
Drogon grew insanely fast season 5-6. He went from a pigeon to a dog in season 2-3 (reasonable), then a dog to a horse in 3-4 (reasonable), then from a horse to a small elephant in 4-5 (still reasonable). Then from a small elephant to a FRIKKIN DINOSAUR in season 5-6. And then only a small 25% increase season 6-7, so clearly they grow fast their first four years, then have a massive growth spurt at the age of five, and then slow down considerably. I didn't even realize he had grown at all until this video, I checked before and could see no difference in season 6 and 7.

thats odd, a couple newspapers here have wrongly reported it then this being the quote "The dragons this year are the size of 747s. Will the scales become much more difficult to pierce as when the spears were hurting drogon in the episode in the arena I was a bit like well this isn't very impressive. Do they get to the point where only certain materials can pierce their skin?
@unpopularopinionguy8480
@unpopularopinionguy8480 6 жыл бұрын
Pete n What determines if you can pierce something or not is not really a matter of the material you are using, but the force you put behind the thrust and how sharp it is. I can shove a toothpick in you belly if i hit it hard enough. The reason why arrows cant pierce his scales and a Balista can, is not because a balista bolt is made of stronger steel, but because the balista shot is heavier and traveling much faster.
@Krazeeyfool
@Krazeeyfool 6 жыл бұрын
i think you answered the wrong thread aha, but I was curious about this anyway as usually in fantasy its all about the material and not the speed. I do hope drogon gets more resilient to this as otherwise cersei could make 100's and then be firing tonnes of massive arrows and the dragons can't do shit

When qyburn shows cersei his dragon killing weapon balerions skull seems only slightly taller than cersei. In the video Daenaerys is shown to be around the same size as drogons skull (pretty much) considering cersei and dany are both human and female , they are likely to be within a foot of eachother. Regardless of their height, i understand how balerion is bigger but surely not 4x bigger than drogon

This video reminds me of the debate that's been going on about Anne McCaffrey's Pernese dragons. She did state at one point that she got confused with European metres and Imperial feet, thinking that they were about equal in size. In fact, a metre is three feet three inches, more than tripling her envisioned sizes. In her stories Ramoth was the largest dragon ever hatched on Pern: at 45 metres ( 150 ft) long, with a wingspan, including shoulder width, of 74.7 metres (249 ft), it sounds like Ramoth was heading for the size of Balerion at the Field of Fire.

thanks, Mark. if this is true, holy moly, balerion is huge. i hadn't ever pictured him that big because i forgot that the picture we see of him fighting with aegon happened way before he died.... insane. think drogon will make it to season 8? if so, he could get huge too considering how fast he's growing side note. do u think that dragon is drogon?? is it possible that she's riding viserion there? he looks yellowish, but that might just be the coloring because of all the fire everywhere...

@mnal5gex
@mnal5gex 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I took a double take myself, Its definitely Drogon, We have to remember that the lighting plays a factor in the look of each Wyvern/Dragon. As for the his size, I have to agree with you in that he will grow substantially in the next two seasons. I'm taking into account the food sources here; There haven't been these creatures in many years. Their food source has grown since they been gone. I would not be surprised to see Drogon easily surpass Balerion the dread in a quarter of the time due to there being very little competition for food (3 dragons left). That being said Drogon can grow incredibly. Not to mention that we aren't given any time frame for these creatures. If we say that the entire content from the birth of Drogon to the current season is 6 years then Drogon is grow at such a fast rate that he can easily pass Balerion this season and catch his size of Balerion at the time of Balerions death in half that time. Now, will Drogon die this season? No, I do however see one of the Wyverns/Dragons dying at the end of this season. There is a theory that Dany will fight alongside Jon at the wall. There, one of the 3 dragons die. Said dragon is then resurrected by the Knight king. I can see this coming to pass for 2 reasons. First, why not a better way to introduce an ice breathing Drake then to show you at first hand how they came to be. secondly, GRRM wrote a novel, "The Ice Dragon" where the main charter, Adara, rode an Ice Dragon from the North and used this dragon to save her town from seven, YES I said "7" Fire Drakes. Now this would give "The Others" such an advantage that Westeros would be in some hellish shit (excuse the language). I believe this could happen because at the of 2 other reasons. During the visions of Dany in season 3, when her dragons a taken you see a vision of hers where the King's landing is totaled by what looks like fire and covered in song. Its my belief that this is both a play on the saying of Ice and Fire and perhaps hinting at the fact that there might be more then just fire Drakes in their world. There is more I can go on. But that is just a piece of my reasoning. I look forward to your next video!

You the real MVP! Food for thought about the relative size difference between riding on dragonback and in front of mouth: If you want to do an apples to apples comparison, why not overlay Danny and Aegon's relative heights while in a riding position? That way you avoid the distortion that arises from moving them to the front of the beast? Winter is Coming.

I think you should also check body proportions of the dragons right after their birth, because we don't really know if dragons' body parts are getting bigger at the same rate. Humans for instance don't grow up at the same rate (compare proportion ratio of head to body of toddler and an adult).

Very interesting video good analysis and size comparisons. Drogon looks bigger than before but I was expecting him to be lot bigger.
