this song is so relatable coming from a broken family, i had to deal with alcoholic abusive parents, and i had to take the parental role most of my life... i had to be so responsible at a young age... i love my mother endlessly, but the fact she continued to stay with such an abusive man for so long haunts me.. that line 'we were born into a family, not a fortune' speaks to me so much.. ofc my childhood was awful most the time, i still had such wonderful siblings and the love for my mom is endless, those few good memories outweigh the pain

Derek's voice is beautiful in every way. Empty Days & Sleepless Nights was definitely my favorite record of 2011, probably my favorite record of all time. Flawless band.

So many childhood recollections. Somehow, it gives me some closure, honesty. Thank you, Defeater.

You know what I love more than anything about this band? The fact that they DO make these acoustic songs as well as the hardcore ones. They can convey so much more emotion, doing this, than other bands who do only acoustic or only hardcore.

The acoustic stuff brings in new fans for sure. But you should all listen to the old albums in order. Gotta love the way he describes the story about world war 2.

well i never liked hardcore but this band is like wow... amazing!!! i really like the concept that the whole album is a story, and i think it's pretty unique for this genre! well i have to say that if i see this story in a short movie i will defenantly dislike it, it's nothing more than misery, sadness and failure in a family, nothing interesting no conclusion, but i dont care, its the music tha y hear i admire and respect how they managed to combine the music with the lyrics, i am really amazed.

I was playing some of their heavier songs. My mom was going "WHY ARE YOU LISTENING TO THIS, THEY'RE JUST SCREAMING AND SHOUTING!", I started playing this song instead, she goes "Oh this is much better! See, why don't you listen to bands like this all the time instead?" lol

Luckily I'm older (pushing 40) and after half a lifetime of playing, studying, occasionally writing and listening to an encyclopedic range of music by family and friends have all learned better than to question the legitimacy of anything I'm listening to or they know they'll get a dissertation on how screaming is simply a stylistic variation on the voice and how it's timbre is the only appropriate one for portraying certain stories and emotions. Don't question the artistic merit of music I like unless you're ready to get a rambling screed about music history lol
