If you think the odds of finding anyone to work part-time Friday and Saturday nights until 2:00 am are slim - you're right! Every weekend for nearly 20 years, local legend Guitar Slim has played the same gig, bringing his brand of down-home blues to an east side Cleveland night spot, much to the delight of his loyal group of fans. The party starts at 9:00 as this cozy neighborhood bar gets transformed into a southern juke joint called the Cascade Lounge.

Eddie Jones purists have a right to be upset, but having this Slim around is better than having no Slim at all. Let Cleveland enjoy this man.

We DO have a Slim! GUITAR SLIM, JR. - EDDIE JONES' SON! And he is one of the finest guitar players AND singers that I have ever heard in my life (and I was born and raised in New Orleans.) Eddie Jones came here to record at Cosimo Matassa's J&M studio, in fact, that is Ray Charles on piano on "The Things I Used To Do," screaming "Yeahh!" at the end of the last take - Jones' timing issues.... But his son, Guitar Slim, Jr.!!! Is one of the most impecable guitar players - his abilities near (I hate to say this, but it's TRUE) - PERFECTION. Stevie Ray Vaughn was in awe of both father and son. Son, Guitar Slim, Jr. who I work with, met with SRV and was about to tour with him, when sadly SRV died shortly after their meeting.

I just left New Orleans and got to play with Guitar Slim Jr. He plays down on Bourbon Street at Sing Sing. The best bar in New Orleans. The best blues musicians I have ever seen.

Sing Sing is closed now, but Slim, Jr. is still going strong, playing bigger and better venues. He has lived a life almost as hard as his daddy. But he's a family man, loves his kids and grandkids, honors his dad, AND his mom. He is like family to me, like a brother. But then, this is New Orleans, :-)

Then, haha, Frank Zappa was talking about the REAL Guitar Slim! If you click on a video of Guitar Slim, Jr., you'll be shocked at how perfectly formed this apple is - he is one of the greatest guitar players I've ever heard (although he plays through a lot of shitty amps and argues with them a lot, in spite of his awe inspiring playing ability.) But that's only because living as a musician in New Orleans is a wonderful spiritual experience, however - not a wonderful financial one.

Gtr Slim of Cleveland took me under his wing when I just started playing blues gtr. I had the opportunity to play at the Cascade for about a year in his band in the mid 80s. He's an excellent singer and guitarist and would let anyone sit in but if the music was wrong he would let you know. Slim is no relation to the original Guitar Slim. I'm pretty sure he got the name because he is slim and plays the guitar. I heard he is in bad health so I do not know if he is still performing.

The original Guitar Slim, right! Also SRV's. His son is around my age (57,) and going strong, been playing in New Orleans all his life. The great New Orleans singer/songwriter/guitarist, the late Earl King, told me that he learned EVERYTHING about performing from Guitar Slim. Guitar Slim, Jr. carries the banner today, and SRV was also wild about Slim, Jr.

it's one thing to use the stage name of another guy, but in this case the other guy was a legend - Eddie Jones, who wrote The Things I Used to Do, idolized by Earl King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm sure this is a nice guy, but on the inter-web it confuses people, especially since Eddie Jones aka Guitar Slim, who died in 1959, has a son who is a phenomenal guitar player/vocalist in New orleans, plays jazz fest every year, nominated for a Grammy, etc. And who is one of the greatest blues guitar players and singers I've ever heard. It just sucks that the name wasn't trademarked. Couldn't this dude be Guitar Skinny or something?

Jan Clements I agree. It's BS to call himself "Guitar Slim".
@redlipstickmafia
@redlipstickmafia 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I don't mean to be an ass or a s**t stirrer! And this musician on this video plays fine and might be a nice person. But using this name is not a nice thing to do. It's disrespectful. It's not about trademarks and legal stuff. It's about honor. Something just hit me about it when I read a remark posted here on the topic, and it said something to the affect that it seemed just fine for a thin man holding a guitar to use the name "Guitar Slim," as though it was just some generic identifier. But it is not OK to TAKE the stage name of a one of a kind innovator, a LEGEND and national recording artist who was well known by many, and who has a son who performs and records to this day, under his daddy's famous stage name appropriately, , as a tribute to and in honor and memory of his father. His name is Guitar Slim, Jr, and like his dad, he is an outstanding guitar player, singer, writer, and performer in New Orleans, who also has toured the world. Guitar Slim, Jr. was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989 for an album consisting of his own performances of his late father's compositions. He performed a very special show consisting of many of his daddy's songs, as a tribute to his father, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival a couple of years ago, and the late wonderful Allen Toussaint on the piano. He even died his hair bright pinkish red to match his suit, just like his dad used to do with his on his shows! In addition, the real Guitar Slim, Sr. (Eddie Jones) has been acknowledged on film and in recordings, by many prominent blues artists such as Buddy Guy, who attributed his performing style to Guitar Slim (aka Eddie Jones.) and especially by Stevie Ray Vaughn, who was a big fan, and who in the 1980's arranged to and was able to meet with Guitar Slim, Jr., and was planning to record and tour with him, unfortunately just before Stevie Ray died.. SRV performed and recorded some of Guitar Slim, Sr. (Eddie Jones's) songs, such as "The Things I Used to Do." Ray Charles also recorded some of his songs, such as "Sufferin Mind," Ray Charles, also having played piano on Guitar Slim's recordings at Cosimo Matassa's J&M Studios in New Orleans. So I just feel that anyone out there working as a blues man, who posts his videos on KZfaq, and whose local TV station gives him publicity under that name, is acting in a discourteous manner when he takes the stage under the name of a blues guitar playing, singing, writing, and performing LEGEND, who died in 1959, and who has a Grammy nominated son performing around the world, under HIS OWN life long stage name, Guitar Slim, JR.

I play piano and organ with Guitar Slim, Jr., who is the son of Eddie Jones, aka Guitar Slim - ("The Things I Used to Do," "Sufferin Mind," "Letter from My Girlfriend," etc.) Guitar Slim, Jr. (Rodney Armstrong,) lives and performs in New Orleans, performs yearly at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and was nominated for a Grammy award in 1989 for an album consisting of his recordings of his daddy's songs. Allen Toussaint played piano with the real Guitar Slim, Jr. at the Jazz Fest a few years ago, when they did an entire show of of Guitar Slim, Sr."s music. I was there playing Hammond organ.
